This weekend dug out one of my favorites and very essential accessory. Can any one tell me what it is for?

Don't know the proper name but my uncle called it a "Third Hand".  It attached to the side of the work bench a few feet from the vise to hold a long workpiece at the correct height. When not in use it would fold down out of the way.

Some of you had the right idea . @8ntruckThis one is the closest to what it actually is.
It is called a “ Jointer Gauge”. It attaches to a hand plane and it is used as a guide to keep plane cutting a square edge or at any other angle desired. This one is used for a wood plane but they were also made for metal planes.

We used to use that when I was a young Boy Scout.  Lots of white birch around here.  Burns like crazy!

This guide looks like one that really works.  The small ones you find today are nearly useless.
