Sweet tire chains

I found these hanging in the barn.  Forgot I had ‘em!

Cross diamonds or cross squares are about as good as you can get for traction. That's what most loggers use around here.

Now I need to toss em on a tire to see what they fit, but I feel like a 23-8.50 could feel right snug at home in em!

@Pullstart  something I  do  when installing chains  is to add a  spring pull  , near the  hook up point  , so as the chain settles in it can  constantly  get where  it wants to be . chains obviousely can't stretch  but their  happy spot can be helped with a constant chain pull spring . once found ,then a  cross spring pull , on diameter  , keeps them happy. pete

I found these yesterday when I returned from an outing... on top of my trash can outside my garage.  In the original 'hat box' they came in from 1960 or so.  Of course, can't use this style with wheel weights on, but the cross chains are exactly the same as the ones on my 4 links that I use on my tractors.  There's just enough cross chains to turn my 4 links into 2 links!  So I started taking them apart (much as I hate to cannibalize original stuff, but they were useless to me as-is).  There are 10 links across, need only 8, so I'll either let the extra two 'hang' or maybe cut them off.

 

Got a text from a friend later asking if I found the present that he left.  Found them in his barn.

What are the chains with straps @Jeff-C175?  I have a set like those too.  I also have a box of extra links, that I extended some chains that were just short enough to have a gap at the attach point.

That's what they are in 'stock' form.  The strap goes through the holes in the wheels and you cinch the strap down tight.  They are for 'temporary use' as stated on the 'hat box' (what I can still read of the label.  Say you're out in your '55 Crown Vic and get hit by a sudden snow storm.  You strap these suckaz on and you're good to go.  There were eight of those in the box.  I've taken three apart getting ready to add them to the tractor chains.

Be honest whichya... last year I had clearance issues in between the tire and frame with chains on my L-157...

 

Not sure if that type of chains would solve that issue, but it puts an idea in my head...

The problem with that is that they are so expensive. Remember, the L-157 has 3 lug pattern...

 

I would be ecstatic if I could find something that would work without having to have them made by a spacer company.

Still an easy fix. One of two ways.

 

Purchase spacers that are fairly thin and use a stud changeover instead of bolts.

 

Or, get cheap thin spacers that have five lugs and chop off the two you don't need with a grinder.

I certainly wouldn't mind going with 3/8-24 studs if I could find spacers that I could make work.

 

You got suggestions for some spacers that I could use? I only really need 1/2 to 1 inch of space...

Isn't the bolt circle on those the same 4.5" as the five hole lugs?

If so there are Bunches of wheel spacers on the fleabay

You could likely drive 2 studs out the back of a spacer too…

@Ed Kennell  / @Pullstart  , use about a 3"   hooked extension spring , with a  1/8"  wire  hook attached to it , lets you set up a  chain pull where ever you need it , then just drive it around , and watch it pull things into place . one you use it , you are hooked on its effect , pete

Chains with straps for temporary use.  I'be used them a couple of times.  Once on a '67 Falcon, and again on a 1st generation Monte Carlo.  They worked well.

I will!  I may have inadvertently included them in a bunch of tools I gave to a collector friend.

 

I always opt for repair, new chains are made of cheese.

I'm pretty sure the bolt circle is 4.5" ...I will certainly measure though.

 

Now, what spacers to buy...... I'm going to look around later for some... and I'll let you guys know what I come up with before I buy anything.

In your particular case you might want to mock up the setup with chains on to see how much space you really need.

 

I would absolutely want to keep the required movement out away from the transmission to a minimum where you only have 3 points of attachment versus the standard 5.
