River Rat 1 #1 Posted October 10, 2022 I need to replace the filter and Fluid on my C145 Automatic. What oil should I use. Right now it is tan/brown. I am using a Fram Ph16 as I was able to cross reference from the Wheel Horse number. I may be mistaken but the E in the Model number may stand for Eaton. The tractor does not move very fast in forward and very slow in reverse. Any suggestions about this.
daveoman1966 3,762 #2 Posted October 10, 2022 IMHO... Fram filters are the cheapest on the market...and that's all they're good for. Just because they fit the threads, they're still junk. Get the OEM filter for less than $20 bux. Part number 79-5270...here: https://www.rcpw.com/parts-lookup?arisku=108335&arireturnurl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.rcpw.com%2Flookup%2F%23%2FToro_Consumer%2F01-14KE03%252c_C-145_Automatic_Tractor%252c_1982%2FAutomatic_Transmission%2F3b2c3fe7-acaf-4d30-9224-7ef3333aa6ff%2F182ee7d2-c356-4700-b17b-7e16009583c1&aridescription=See+Supercession%3A+79-5270&aribrandcode=TO

WHX?? 49,203 #4 Posted October 10, 2022 First off ditch the orange death in favor of a NAPA 1410 or 5990?? oem. Brown fluid use 10w-30 oil. Sounds like you may have other hydro problems tho. 2
953 nut 55,960 #5 Posted October 10, 2022 This Eaton 11100 Service Manual should help you to determine the problem with slow speed. Remove the cover down between your legs where the motion controller lives, I had one that was full of walnut shells, mouse/chipmunk bedding etc. when I got it. Removed all that and it went a lot better. I agree, ditch the Fram and use 10 W 30.
oldlineman 1,482 #6 Posted October 10, 2022 Yes agree on the Fram filters, was a time when I used them, that time has long past, just plain junk now IMO! Bob

The Ph16 I reference has bee on the tractor for at least 10 years. I will be using a Wix or Napa filter to replace. The use of 10w30 oil was what I needed to know. The closet Toro/Wheelhorse Dealer would want to sell me their oil and filter. Toro/Wheelhorse does not Make the filter nor do they process the oil. That's all subcontracted. thanks for the comments
jah_trains@yahoo.com 1 #8 Posted August 22, 2023 Can 10W30 synthetic blend oil be used in my c145 hydro transmission? Just getting around to changing the filter and oil.
oliver2-44 9,876 #9 Posted August 23, 2023 Yes I use synthetic in the hydro and I believe I’ve read several others do as well.

Bob I'm going to pile on this - years ago I had a car using Fram oil filters - long story short they caused an oil pressure problem because they're junk and not manufactured to specs - better more expensive filters are cheaper than engines or transmissions - same philosophy with oil and changes .
