K181 Governor Part

[Sled Man 15]

I am working to set up a wheel horse with a K181 up for pulling.  The previous owner has it set up with open RPM and I need to govern it for the association I will be pulling in.  Does anyone know where to purchase the Governor arm as in the picture other than EBay?

Put an ad in classifies wanted here guy. Parts guys watch that section more than here. Shame on the PO for not saving the parts. 

Nothing else try other GT sites. Those are parts pretty common for most Kohler small blocks of any breed.

Looks like a Tecumseh carb on there with a big spacer in between. You might be better off with a correct carb and no spacer

I actually have that carburator already.  However, the choke hits my air filter housing and even If I adjusted that the openning on the air filter housing is too big.  I guess I could weld in a washer or something to right size it.  I would prefer a new carb over a rebuilt.  I was wondering if the spacer would cause an issue with the governor working correctly.  Will have to look at it some more this evening.

With governors, the lengths of the linkages pretty much always matter. Having the spacer will change the angles between the governor arm and the throttle plate and (remember that geometry class some years back, and maybe calculus?) that will affect both the length and the movement.

Might be an illusion but gov shaft looks bent. Also engine won't cool well with missing top tinwork

I think the bent look is an illusion but I'll check it out.  I have the tin, just have it off to work on it.  Good to know though as I did not realize it helps with cooling.

I agree that the carburetor needs to be replaced with the correct one. The throttle cable does not connect to the carb, but to the governor. The long governor arm then connects to the throttle. You have a lot of undoing and redoing to make it right. I am in my shop now looking for governor parts which I know I have, but are eluding me at the moment.

The filter housing mounting plate should not interfere with the choke, as long as you have the right plate.

Should the round piece that I believe the throttle fits into be free moving or rigid?  If anyone has a pic of a correctly configured Governor I would appreciate it as a point of reference.

Interesting Bob. Pros and cons of coming over the top versus the bottom? 

Over top should be a shorter cable = less cable friction?

Over the top enables one to use that extended tab/hole.

I believe the Kohler manual shows the bottom way. 

Mine are rigged both ways.  

Not seeing the purpose of that spring in 2nd pic when ther is a solid link. 

 

To answer you question Sled the round disc should revolve freely on the nut but is linked to the arm via a spring that can be seen in your first pic. The other tab is held firmly UNDER the nut. This lever also serves as the rev. Stop for 3600 rpm and obviously cable clamp.

I've not seen the plastic inserts in the governor arm and throttle plate arm before. Combined with the spring, this must be a really smooth mechanism. I'll have to look around for some of those!

The connection of the throttle from below that doesn't use the little lever on the governor arm must need extra resistance to hold the throttle open!

Newer style Don. All of mine don't have those just a micro C clip.

The manual does show how it all goes together and adjustment.

I got a fresh build on the bench I'll get a pic.
