Today on "This Old Corn Crib"

 

I'm doing some repairs on my basement walls and I gotta admit that I am out of my realm but I think that I'm goin' about it the right way. I'm digging out all of the loose mortar to at least a depth of 2" and using a type S mortar with an adhesion promoter in place of water for the mud mix. Not a fun job but is gotta be done. I am very open to any advise from those who know more on this subject.

 

Here is a pic of one wall that I have dug out. Still need to pressure wash this wall before mudding it back up again.

 

One short wall that I have already repaired. Needs a little touch up yet.

Sounds like you are planning to start your own "HOW TO" show.            Looks like you have the job well in hand, the inside basement wall repairs seem like a good winter project,       outside can be put off until spring.

My hands are what hurt today. A lot of hammer swinging, chiseling, & diggin' with a small pry bar.

After back and knee surgery. close to the ground work is out for me unless I can use a stool or lay on my side and work with one hand. Sucks.

An air chisel would make short (more fun) work out of loose mortar.

You need to wait for a period for all moisture to dry out and then you should use a masonry sealer on it.

Dan:  One thing I would recommend  in additiona to spraying on or brushing on a sealer before doing the motar is to get a motar additive that resists water and water absortion since you are doing this on ground level application.

I used something about ten years ago on my old house (maybe 15 years now)  that had similar properties as this.    You can see the water bead up after motoar dries.

 

Most of these products can just be added to the motar mixture.

I'm about 24hrs and a little over 240lbs of mortar mix into this job. I'm learning as I go but there is one very important piece of advise that I have learned. If you need to do a job like this, call "The Guy". There is a reason why mason's get paid what they do. This job sucks!!

@953 nut Unlike the TV shows that make our wives think that you can build a house in one 1/2 hour episode. Well, here we are 1 month later. Weather permitting, this job has consumed most of my after work & weekend life. Warm weather last week allowed me to finish up the East side of the house.

 

Tonight finally put the finishing touches on the West side of the house, by candle light.  Out side of the house is done. Finally!!!
