Neat rig!

Rated HP will be pretty low but don't let that fool you. It'll move a horse just fine.

@pfrederi is knowledgeable on these.

I think they used these on gensets and water pumps.  The plywood lift ring suggests there was something of similar weight on the other side.  Old school rope pull on the flywheel end.  Military surplus geeks might be able to find manuals and parts.

I'd had that same thought but I'm far from an expert.

I've read online in forums in the past that a lot of people think they put out more like six or seven HP. Some say as high as nine. But the difference, as stated above, is absolute gobs of torque for the size of the engine.

Its like the big air cooled 4cyl Wisconsin and Continental engines...25hp...but enough torque to run an industrial wood chipper😅

Think maybe on the lines of under promise and over deliver?

I've read different schools of thought on that.

All of them or none of them might be garbage or truth.

It's possible the military came up with the entire set of specs from one end of the other it just said something like, build this for us.

Another thing I've read is that there are certain levels of horsepower that are designated for certain levels of tasks or machinery.  Those designations might be ancient so even though a certain size engine nowadays would make a certain amount of power, back when the designations were put in place it would have made a lot less. Think about the monstrouses from the 30s 40s and 50s in comparison to today's small engine's. If a military entity ordered a certain size engine by cubic inch or cubic centimeter in the 70s or 80s it would have made substantially more power than the same volume back in the 40s.

Another theory I've read is that whatever manufacturer designed the engine at the time knew full well that it made two or three times that needed HP but the government asked for three so they got three.

Certainly would be interesting to hear other people's thoughts about this...

Could be de-rated, for power at desired rpms like generators spinning 1700 or so?

If it's off a genset, it might be governed at 1800 RPM, which would make 3hp a conservative ballpark number.

For comparison, the K161 has 16.9 inches displacement. But with it being a twin cylinder, it's probably a very smooth runner.

I think it is a great candidate for a repower! Looking forward to what you come up with! :thumbs:
