That is a Katydid, bush cricket. See them here in SWVA starting in late August. They do make an interesting sound.

When I was a somewhat younger fella. Like little kid. I spent a fair amount of time at my grandparents place in the summers.

I heard that noise enough times for the first time every year at my grandparents place that I wasn't very old and I started calling them Gramma's house bugs.

I still do, to this day. Even got Trina in the habit now.

I don't think I knew what they really were until just 4 or 5 years ago.

Dang it, I finally had an answer for something on here and y'all beat me too it.  When I moved from Louisiana to North Carolina years ago, a katydid hitched a ride on the dash of my (now) wife's car and rode the whole way.  On account of his Cajun heritage,we called him Clabert (pronounced clay bear for you Yankees).

In the summer time our creek seems to be a favorite Amphitheater for the Katydids, thousands of them ding their thing are deafening. Didn't know they existed as far north as central NY.

Me either. Bat on the porch the day before and now this. Plus chipmunks which have never been around and wood bees driving me crazy in the garage.

Just don't park your vehicles under where bats roost.
