Onan Oil Level

Recommended Posts

Wheel Horse Fan

I changed the oil and filter on my 416-8 after I bought it. I put in a little over a quart in then ran the engine a bit to fill up the filter. Then I let it sit and filled it up to the full line on the dipstick. I then went and used the tractor for some chorse. At the end of the day I checked the oil and it was still at the full line. A week later I checked the oil before I used it and the oil level was super high, almost at the middle of the dipstick. If I run the engine and check the oil it is fine or a tad low. I put in just about 2 quarts total after I changed the oil.

What's the deal?

Thanks!

Did you use a genuine Onan filter? If not, your filter is probably draining back into the crankcase. Bad news because you're basically starting the engine "dry" until the filter fills up again.

Ordered the toro P/N listed from the parts catalog. I would assume it's a Onan filter. I will have to check. I bought two filters so I can check the other new one.

My 520H does the same thing. I make sure to clean the dipstick tube and use the tube to squeegee off the oil back down the tube, then check it, which the oil just seems to be on the dipstick. I don't know why it does it, but it does. I have a Genuine Wheel Horse filter on mine, and it has done it with every oil and filter change I've done.
