Hello everyone.

 

I'm the proud owner of a (new to me) 1976 WH C-120. I bought it locally here in S.W. Pa. for $450. Gave the fellow (really good dude) that sold it to me an extra $50 to deliver it. He brought it late this afternoon and by the time I was done familiarizing myself with everything and then mowed with it, it was dusk. So, I will post some photos tomorrow.

 

I bought it because it is a tank!. It's built to withstand a nuclear attack. I can't believe how heavy-duty this thing is. And that old Kohler just hums along, and I honestly don't think it had to work very hard at all. It has wheel weights and the cherry on top was the guy gave me two new rear turf tires, one mounted on a spare rim and one unmounted. The steering is tight and smooth, and the deck is quiet. It cuts beautifully. It has a couple dings here and there, but overall, it is in really nice cosmetic condition and mechanically, it seems to be in excellent condition. I asked the fellow why he was selling it and he said he was going to take it to his camp but decided to fix the one he has there. He had bought a Simplicity brand new about four years ago and the C-120 was mostly sitting. The guy had a handle bolted to the brake pedal because he has a prosthetic right leg, and it was easier for him to hand brake. Plus, his new machine has power steering, so it's just easier for him to operate overall. So, I bought it to use it because I think with regular maintenance, this old girl has a lot of life left in her. Plus, I'm tired of working on stuff that wasn't well made to begin with.

 

Sorry so long-winded for my first post, but now you all can understand why I joined.

Thanks, Don. I just appreciate well engineered and well-built equipment. Heck, my trim mower is a 45-year-old Lawn Boy brick top that's easy to work on and easier still to use. My sweetie treated me to a new Echo trimmer about two years ago that I love to death for the time it saves me.

Someone asked if my WH is gear or hydro. It is an 8-speed gear drive. 3 forward, 1 reverse, hi-lo range. Smooth as silk!  BTW, thanks for the "welcome aboards" from everyone. I appreciate it.

Oh, and the MTD built Montgomery Ward mower is what the C-120 is replacing. It has a good motor, but I think the rear end I put in it 3 years ago is going south, it's 30 years old and needs new shoes which aren't cheap. It's simply not worth sinking any more money into.

So, I need to know if there are supposed to be dust caps over the front hubs where the c-clip holds the wheel on the axle? Anyone think I could paint those JD wheel weights red? Hey, it bugs me, lol.

I believe red paint would stick to those, yes. 

If not just toss them in a volcano. They'll definitely be red... For a bit.

I agree with @ebinmaine that those weights need a layer of paint to give just the right amount of downforce. Could be red or something to go with the color of the front wheels. Up to you.

 

Also, I'm familiar with the MTD-type woes--in our case it was a Murray that seemed to have endless issues except that Briggs engine just wouldn't quit! It's gone now and good riddance.

Nice tractor!  My C Series sure are hard workers.   Lots of friendly, knowledgeable help here scattered between the endless chatter. 
 

Yep that poor horse is probable running a yellow fever with those weights. Get some paint on them quickly and it will feel better in the morning.

14 horse B&S with a cast sleeve. It runs great, no smoke, starts right up. The deck is fine, no rust. I just rebuilt it with new spindles, one was wonky and it was getting ready to check out completely. It would be a good parts donor or could be put back into service as a camp mower. Just have to have an air tank or portable air compressor for the dry rotted tires. At 57, I've grown weary of throwing good money after bad. The one thing that upsets me is that it only accepts a motorcycle battery and of course after five years, it puked this last spring. So, I have a $90 battery in a $45 mower, lol.
