Hodge71 664 #1 Posted September 14, 2022 Hey folks, Last night while mowing with my 74 C-160 8 speed I noticed that my clutch engagement got extremely jumpy. No way to really "feather" the clutch like I used to be able to. Now it engages almost all the way out and all at one time. Just a loud screech and a wheelie. . Needless to say its a bit unnerving to be popping wheelies in second gear all the time. I put up with it because I was almost finished but after I disengaged the blades it sounded really noisy and I noticed on the smooth driveway that the clutch pedal was jumping. Is there a bearing somewhere in the system that would cause the jumpy pedal and loud screech and instant engagement of the clutch? I'm far from an expert on 8 speeds but can troubleshoot if I know where to look. I can hold my own on Sundstrands all day. TIA Jeff
pfrederi 17,865 #2 Posted September 14, 2022 Sudden onset would point to failure of the bearing in the idler pulley. Pull off belt guard and take a peak 1
stevasaurus 22,856 #3 Posted September 14, 2022 Hi Hodge, could be a spring also. It should be something outside of the transmission, I don't think it is something inside.
peter lena 8,719 #4 Posted September 14, 2022 @Hodge71 agree with others on the idler pulley , possibility , also an opportunity to look at the rest of the related , lever rod set up , for lubrication , make the rust run out , and maybe a new spring , bet that pulley bearing is shot / dry , pete 1
Ed Kennell 38,629 #5 Posted September 14, 2022 Yep, idler pulley bearing. Can't remember the number of cheap horses I have bought as having bad transmissions. All had a bad idler bearing.

peter lena 8,719 #7 Posted September 14, 2022 @Hodge71 https://mail.yahoo.com/d/folders/1/messages/APD_5HxBFxwfYyIDtwHUwCdGC_s something like this , is a great opportunity , bigger bearing , bronze 3/8 id insert , do a regrease , pete
peter lena 8,719 #8 Posted September 14, 2022 @Snoopy11 , often refer to bearing grease seal removal , with a flat pocket screwdriver , best yet for that , small flat putty knife , very thin edge , stiff blade , barely touch the seal and it pops out , no damage at all . pete 1

Just another idea. Don
peter lena 8,719 #10 Posted September 15, 2022 @Snoopy11 as you know , if you are looking at a problem , thru a straw , and cannot fathom any other possible way to correct this , you just don't know what to do , on the other hand , I know you crossed over that boundary long ago, often your reply's are just like a guy in the same spot that i,m in , like , a 3rd shift call in , pete
