So I washed my rear end and sundstrand 90-1136 and now the by pass valves leaks when I screw it in past a certain point. If I screw it all the way in I can sit there and watch the fluid start seeping past it. I changed the o-ring with an R-04 i believe is what it was. Do these require some sort of thread sealer? There was nothing on it when I took it out, and when I used the valve to push the tractor in my shop it worked fine and has never leaked. Any ideas would be wonderful!

So yesterday I picked-up a C175. She was rusting away as she was stored outside. She had a new to her Kohler K341. @squonk The previous owner indeed better had"LET AN ELECTRICIAN CHECK his SHORTS!" as bad wiring shorted the battery out, and exploded/melted. She has a Sundstrand hydro pump with a Filter, is that normal? By the pump I believe it's a 1980. But you never now for sure as it's made in Oevel. Due to the bad wiring, the engine was in no running condition. But don't think the K341 has many hours on it. The hydro I don't know if it works. She was hard to push. So i lift up one wheel, so we could roll here one one wheel and the diff prevented the trans from locking up. So first things to do: 1) get the engine running 2) replace the steering wheel, but don't think removing it will be very hard as it's already split in two. 3) replace the axleseals, the oil leak caused a lot of sandbuild up as she was mainly used on for leveling out a horse track. 4) clean all the acid and remove all the old wiring to do a full rewiring 5) replace the plastic seat pan with a metal. 6)... I'm looking forward on my first C. It's also my first hydro, I don't know a lot about them and prefer actual gears. Simpler and need less maintenance (parts-shortage). But since I couldn't find another project WH and me hearing a lot of good things about hydro's on the forum.. I finally took the shot.

I was pulling a roller and thatch rake the other day with my c120 hydro and noticed oil on the back of the fender. On looking closer I saw the plug thing on the back of the pump leaking oil. Any advice on how serious this will be to repair? Anything helps

Hello, I am hoping someone can help my. I recently acquired a c160 for the engine for another tractor. So I did a motor swap and wanted to see what the hydro was like. I put a plow on it C-160 (which now has a 12hp engine on it). I did a quick test run and everything was good. I drained the fluid and change the filter (Napa 1410 filter and sae 30 transmission fluid as it stated to only use this fluid on the tractor.) everything was working great after the fluid change. I plowed two driveways and the sidewalks near my house... all the sudden the tractor would not go forwards or in reverse. I tried to pick the plow up and nothing... I checked my drive belt it was turning like it should. I started to push the tractor and the rear was engaged so it would not move. Of course I was 400’ from my driveway and the plow was down which made it fun. I put the tractor in forward and started to push it and the thing took off. So I hopped on and took it to the front of the garage. I put it in revers and it cut out again so I pushed it in the garage. Today I went out to check the tow valve. I took it out and cleaned the threads up put it back in and it did not change anything. According to the dipstick I have the proper amount of fluid in it. I did have a drip that I fixed on the cylinder still nothing... does anyone out there have any tips to help me out? I’ve never had a transmission like this only manual transmissions. The model of this transmission is the sundstrand 90-1140. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Brian

I know in the past someone posted up the sizes/numbers for the o-rings that fit between the hydro pump and the steel lines' manifold blocks on the D-series - I'd imagine the ones at the pump end and rear axle are the same ....? Will be changing my pump soon due to the hydro to engine coupler blew out it's splines and took out the shaft along with it . Evidently a trailer weighing around 2.5 tons was too much.... I'll try to write up a post on how to build a new coupler from a later model C series pump pulley's center ring and a worn D coupler as well - trying to finish up the Ross steering box right now . Working three horses with Sundstrand hydros and knowing that the day would surely one day come when I’d need to fix one of them I acquired a ‘for spares or repairs’ C-121 auto early this year Described as having an engine that was reluctant to start but will move forwards and backwards I found that whilst it was strong in both directions the hydro takes a while to jump into action once you’ve finally managed to get the engine going. It’s a fault that’s appeared on the forum before and had clearly existed on this tractor for many years judging by the way the keyways on the hubs and axles had been totally destroyed by the jolting action, so much so in fact that a bolt through the axle and hub had been added on one side to transfer drive and keep the hub on! For the price I paid, it would provide an ideal opportunity to have a go at the disassembly and re-assembly of a hydro pump and motor without putting any of my fleet at risk. A nice little ‘no pressure’ learning exercise for the winter was in the offing. Seemed like a good scheme until only a few weeks later the hydro on my D-200 died, it had been working hard with no warning signs or sounds when it failed. Guessing that the symptoms i.e. no motion and no implement lift function could mean the splines on the pump drive had stripped (though I’ve learnt by now not to try second guessing Sundstrand faults) there was no option but to move the three point and ram etc across to my other D-200 for the season and the winter project now needed a bit of re-thinking. If I could cure the fault on the C-121 transmission and it was in otherwise good order I could perhaps use the motor from it for the D but there would be a problem with the pump in that the motion control shaft is on the opposite side for a D series resulting in needing to use some parts from the original D series pump to put together a suitable arrangement. What I really needed was a good pump with motion control shaft available on the correct side but here in the UK D series tractors rarely come up for sale, good hydros from one being parted out, never to my knowledge! Lady Luck smiled on me in September when a complete C-161 transaxle with believed to be good hydro appeared on a well known site and I managed to grab it for the starting bid price . In terms of the hydro, it’s a Sundstrand 90-1173, same as used on the later D series, and has a ‘universal’ motion control shaft which protrudes from either side of the pump casing – The tractor had been parted as the engine was beyond repair so there was a good chance the hydro was indeed good but that would need testing. To do this has meant putting the transmission onto the C-121, getting the engine to start and testing it out thoroughly. It went well in both directions then the real test of confronting an immoveable object with it. Even with weight on the seat, the rear tyres continued to excavate the surface of the drive so I guess the hydro can be considered to be good to use. It appears then that I have enough bits to stand a reasonable chance of getting the D-200 going again using the pump and motor from this transmission. It also means that I’ll be left with a good transaxle which I could use with the pump and motor unit from the C-121 and maybe that tractor is worth saving after all rather than being parted. If I can manage all of this then finally I get my chance with the old D pump and motor to have a go at disassembly and inspection etc. Trying to put all of this into a logical order, I’m going to take the head off the engine to hopefull find out what's up with it while the C-121 still has a good tranny attached and, while the 'jolting' tranny is off, I'll check out the acceleration valves as a first step. I don’t have the time to be working on the project every day at the moment but I’ll keep you posted on progress and I’ll more than likely be needing to pick the brains of those of you with knowledge and experience. Hints, tips and advice always welcome.

I am currently towards the end of a 1276 restoration project, I just got everything back together and sent power to the transmission for the first time. Without the pump on and the gear in neutral, I can spin the axels by hand, one goes one way, the other, the other way, giving me indication that I don't have a differential problem. When I put power to it, everything appears to work as advertised, except when in gear I can stop the Axel from spinning with my hand, little to no resistance. I do have a bit of a rigging problem from worn linkage, but I can move the cam by hand to get it fully in gear. The tow gear in completely closed. Just flushed and filled with fluid. I have not changed the filter. Any idea on why there seems to be no power in the axels??

Hooked up implement valve now hydrostatic has not power
hill881 posted a topic in Implements and Attachments
I hooked up an implement lift valve and now the sunstrand 90-4620 hydrostatic does not have enough power to load tractor on to a trailer. If I unhook the valve the hydrostatic has all kinds of power. Is there something that Im missing or do I have the hose hooked into the wrong ports? Does anyone have a diagram on how the hose hook to the hydrostatic and what ports.- 8 replies

My 1979 C-161 has the Sundstrand pump 90-1173 transaxle. The transaxle needs work. the Sundstrand pump works but I wonder what shape its really in as the tractor appears to have had a lot of use. since the Eaton 1100 is the better hydro, what would be required to do a complete pump & transaxle swap from a Sundstrand to a Eaton 1100. Has anyone actually done a Sundstrand to Eaton swap?

My 75 C-160 with a sundstrand 90-1140 hydro was getting weak, so I put in a sundstrand 90-2046 from my 72 charger 12 parts tractor. Everything fit up and it works fine. My question is can the hydraulic lift cyl be used on the 90-2046, and if so ,where do the two lines connect on the 2046 ?? Thanks for any help. Ed
