Why does the plow angle lever hit my brake pedal?
ebinmaine posted a topic in Implements and Attachments
I don't have pictures yet but I can get some later. I know that will be helpful but I forgot to take them last night. So here's what I know. When I bought my c-160 last year it came with a plow. It was delivered to my house and the plow was not mounted on it. I never saw this particular plow on that particular tractor. The plow I have is 42 inches wide and has a full frame as most of them do. The angle lever has the Z shape to it, NOT a straight stick of metal, and also bends slightly back towards the operator. When I am pulling the angle lever towards me to change the angle of the plow it contacts the brake lever. Any thoughts?- 28 replies

A new member of the herd. C160/Tecumseh.
ebinmaine posted a topic in Restorations, Modifications, & Customizations
A HUGE thank you to Tony @Docwheelhorse for settin' me up here. The generosity of some of our members never ceases to amaze me. This here is another 1974 C160, but with the rare Tecumseh HH/OH160 OHV engine. Made one year only. It's rough. Very much in need of a full disassembly and restoration. When it came here it was missing one tie rod and the other was broken off one end. Today I popped used tie rods on and Trina used her 867 to drag it from the drive to the shed. The engine wouldn't move. Tin was near chock full of skeletal mouseseses and their house. Cleaned that out and the engine spins freely now. So progress has been made. It'll be a good long while before we get to this one but I just couldn't turn it down considering the rarity.- 55 replies

Hello, I am hoping someone can help my. I recently acquired a c160 for the engine for another tractor. So I did a motor swap and wanted to see what the hydro was like. I put a plow on it C-160 (which now has a 12hp engine on it). I did a quick test run and everything was good. I drained the fluid and change the filter (Napa 1410 filter and sae 30 transmission fluid as it stated to only use this fluid on the tractor.) everything was working great after the fluid change. I plowed two driveways and the sidewalks near my house... all the sudden the tractor would not go forwards or in reverse. I tried to pick the plow up and nothing... I checked my drive belt it was turning like it should. I started to push the tractor and the rear was engaged so it would not move. Of course I was 400’ from my driveway and the plow was down which made it fun. I put the tractor in forward and started to push it and the thing took off. So I hopped on and took it to the front of the garage. I put it in revers and it cut out again so I pushed it in the garage. Today I went out to check the tow valve. I took it out and cleaned the threads up put it back in and it did not change anything. According to the dipstick I have the proper amount of fluid in it. I did have a drip that I fixed on the cylinder still nothing... does anyone out there have any tips to help me out? I’ve never had a transmission like this only manual transmissions. The model of this transmission is the sundstrand 90-1140. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Brian

Anything special I need to know about adding a second set screw to a hub?
ebinmaine posted a topic in Wheel Horse Tractors
I have at least 7 hubs on different tractors that I would like to add a second set screw to. I have an older but good quality floor model drill press. I have the tap set. I don't recall ever using the tap set to do anything other than clean out threads. Not make my own thread set. Can anybody give any particular advice? -
Would someone be so kind as to identify the tractor tag in the picture?

Well, most of the regulars here are aware I will be relocating this Spring/Summer. I had hoped to take the remaining collection of tractors with me. However more and more it is becoming obvious that this plan wont work out for numerous reasons. As such, once I make up my mind as to which one to keep, I will be posting the remainder as well as most parts etc up for sale in the Forum Classifieds and CL. As I hope shows in poll info, I have 2 Stage Blower, Restored 48 & 60 inch(195) decks, 54 inch blade, GT14 style Tiller and a project Sickle Bar. The Sickle BAr can likely be made to work on the GT14 style tractors and the C160. I enjoy working on them but as I get older I may not have time or ability to do so. As such, maintenance and parts and ease of use of a single tractor are part of the equation. A couple of these I have poured a lot of time into but I am not emotionally tied to them and I believe if I relocate back east where Grass and tractor need becomes more necessary, I can re-create them. So help me out with my decision. A couple pics of the beasts in question:

I am replacing the needle bearing in the axle of my c160 auto. I have found the B-1816 bearings on motion industries. There are two listed, the B-1816 and B-1816OH (Oil hole). Am I correct in thinking the normal one is correct? Also what thickness of gasket paper is best for making the gaskets for the transmission case and motor to case? Thanks in advance. Thomas

Hello all! I am going to look at a WheelHorse c160 this weekend, but before I do, I felt like I should consult you Oracles for advice. I've read much of your posts here and you guys are obviously the experts with the Wheelhorse. First I will show you what I am looking at, then I will share my I plan to use it for. I'd like your opinions on the tractor, my thinking on my intended uses, and any critiques or advice you might give to a person in my situation. First, here's a link to Craigslist what I am looking at: https://dallas.craigslist.org/mdf/grd/d/77-wheel-horse-garden-tractor/6291885054.html It wasn't until I did some searching on this tractor that I realized how cool Wheel horses are. I have no experience with any garden tractor and only recently felt like I needed one. I recently bought 30 acres of mostly pasture land that I will renovate for hay fields. I plan to contract out the renovation on about 29 acres. The reason I need the tractor is to mow about 1 acre of common areas that are not all together - there is a loop around a couple of ponds, a few areas in and around trees, and a little road around the perimeter of the property. I am also going to need to spray these common areas, and we'll eventually cultivate a small garden. I was thinking this Wheel Horse would be fun to own and do the jobs intended. I could also see myself restoring this tractor as a project in the winters for me and my 2 girls to work on. I expect to get my hands dirty with some repairs, but I am ok with that. My questions are: 1. Is it a good deal? 2. Is my thinking sound on the intended uses? 3. Do you see anything I am misguided on? 4. Other opinions? Thanks!!!!!!

C160 independent hydraulic hitch progress
Hacksawhero123 posted a topic in Restorations, Modifications, & Customizations
I've been busy in my spare time working on this hitch idea. I bought an unfinished sleeve hitch from Wheelhorseman1000 (btw, Lowell makes a great product and sells them too cheap). The cylinder is a factory Horse deck lift cylinder. I'm waiting for my o-ring kits to rebuild and stack two more spool valves (total of three valves). Then after I build some hoses, I'm all set. This has been an enjoyable project. Mark.- 16 replies

Hydraulic question of the day
Hacksawhero123 posted a topic in Restorations, Modifications, & Customizations
Hopefully someone here knows hydraulic science. My idea is to fab the mounts under the seat and onto the axle tubes to mount a hydraulic cylinder to lift and lower the hitch independent from the deck lift cylinder. I'm going to stack another spool valve with the factory valve that came one my C160. The cylinder I'm looking at using is a 1.5" bore with 6" or 8" stroke 1" rod. The million dollar question is "do I have enough oil reservoir in the factory system to add this cylinder?" I don't want to starve the pump when the cylinder is full of oil at full extension. Thanks for any help. Mark. -
I started mowing with my new deck and lost pto engagement. Upon tear down I found one thrust washer wedged between the center stud (in the crank) and the butt end of the center bearing of the pulley. There should be a thrust bearing, two washers, and a spring on the center stud. The spring and one washer are missing. Will it hurt anything to run without the spring, washers, and thrust bearing? Nearest I can tell, all it does is push the pto pulley against the brake when not engaged. Thanks. Mark.

I was going tone deaf from the 40 year old muffler and had to do something. A buddy of mine had the factory mufflers from his HD Road King (less than ten miles on them) so I gave it a shot. It sounds much quieter and mellow. The look I would call "White Trash Fabulous".

I made a pair of sweeps from angle iron and welded them onto my homebuilt ripper today. What a difference! The C160 auto didn't struggle a bit busting the ground up almost a foot deep. I love this beast!! Problem is the neighbors are asking me to bust plots for them. Thanks for the support and wisdom of all of you here. Mark.

I seem to recall that Wheel Horse/Toro built some things for Ford New Holland. I found a 48" deck online that is about a two hour drive from me. It's a New Holland but looks a lot like my 42" deck. Anyone know if this blue deck will fit my C160? It looks similar and nearest I can tell my lift brackets might bolt up. Thanks Fellas. Mark.

C160 auto spool valve
Hacksawhero123 posted a topic in Restorations, Modifications, & Customizations
Does anyone know who manufactured the spool valve for a 1975 model c160? In my research all I can find is OMCO. Yet I find nothing on the interweb about it. I need one more valve to put together a two valve stack assembly. Thanks! Mark. -
I made use of some scrap metal that had accumulated around the shop today. The ground we have here in coastal Texas is called "black gumbo". Hard as a rock when dry and a sloppy mess when wet. I needed something to rip or break the ground before I could till it. My old Troybilt Horse was getting nowhere trying to bust into it. The ripper worked pretty good until I piled too many concrete blocks on it and broke the cheesy 1/8" lift cable that I spliced onto it. I'll pick up some heavier cable tomorrow. Not a bad day though. Mark.

Had some shop time today. Changed the fluids, set the timing and dialed in the carb. I goofed on the new tires. They are 2" taller and wider than the originals. But I did get a smoking deal on them as they were $13 each sold as new factory take offs. As luck would have it, my hydraulic cylinder arrived in the mail from Wheelhorseman1000. Lowell did a jam up job on it and made a one week turn around on it. Thanks Lowell! Bad news is my 42" deck is trashed. Mark.

Over the last few days I've been browsing through the forums looking for information on how to fix a leaking rear axle seal. I'm happy to report that this forum was extremely helpful in pointing me in the right direction and getting the correct seal (although it was a little tough to find) for my C-160 - so big thanks to everybody! Now, tonight I attempted to change the seal and put everything back together. Seal went on great and I think the leak has been fixed. The problem I'm now running into is with the hub itself. I had no problem removing it upon dis-assembly because of the leaking seal, it slid off with minimal effort. The problem is that when reassembling tonight I've found that after I put the hub on over the woodruff key, the hub seems to spin on the hub, about 1/8 of a turn +/-. That seemed excessive to me, so I tried to tighten up the set screw, which bottomed out and essentially did nothing. I removed the hub again to see that it appears the center of the hub where the woodruff key sits is widened in the middle where the key would sit. It's wider in the middle that at either end of the little track the key slides through in the hub. My question is whether or not this is normal and expected, or should this stay tight and the hub not spin on the axle at all? I tried to take some pics, but hard to get a good angle on it. I fear I'm in need of a new hub...

I got a C160 automatic today. I already own a C101 8 speed. The first thing I noticed when driving each one is the C101 seems faster, and seems to not bog down as much up a steep hill. I bought the C160 for more power and speed but now I am regretting my purchase as it feels the C101 drives "stronger". I also noticed how much smoother my C101 is compared to the 160. I know the rubber motor mounts are the reason. Questions is can I upgrade the 160 to the same set up for a smoother operation? Thanks for any answers anyone can give me. Thanks!
