This weekend I picked up this 702 I dubbed Benjamin, and whilst doing so, Mrs. P. went with her girlfriends to the big city, estate sale shopping. They found a couple cool stoves @ebinmaine I bet BBT would die for! I grabbed a low deck trailer from a buddy and headed up to see about getting things out of the basement of a 140 year old downtown city house. Narrow rooms, tiny doors, smaller staircases. The Detroit Jewel and the cook stove were the initial buys. The heater stove with the top fire box was nabbed after I got there. Me thinks hunting blind.

Found me some Model T front wheels and tires and a couple cool signs. The window weight is lead and HEAVY!

I met a guy through selling some snow plow mounts and wiring, ends up being our girls both wrestle and I made an acquaintance out of him (though we are from rivaling towns). I saw him at a benefit last weekend for a watering hole dive bar that burnt down, and he saw a post I made on FB in a Wheel Horse group. He asked if I wanted an old Wheel Horse. He thought it was a 64. I don’t have any ‘64 round hoods, so I thought what the heck. I threw him the old line of @WHX?? and @Achto’s that any old Wheel Horse not running is worth a hundred bucks. He said he hoped for more, but knowing it would go to a good home he’d take it from me. I think he doubled his money reselling the stuff he bought from me, so that is why he passed it on. It’s been up on a rack for about 6 years he said, and ran then. Getting it down, I saw a deep air filter housing. The thought of a Benjamin 854 was getting me excited! Low and behold, I found the 62- serial and a K-161 under the hood, proving it’s a 702. I guess typing this, I have found its new name. I present: Benjamin.

Do they have to be AG style? I have these ATV tires on my 953 and really like them. I use these old 15" Truck snow tires with chains in the winter.

I've got everything back together, put in a new plug, checked the top RPM and I'm good to go on a test run. Sparky is doing me a big favor and sending a replacement coil baffle. I decided to tie wrap the broken one for the test. It was such a nice day and I was too anxious to see what happens. If my tie wrap doesn't hold I don't see it as doing any harm to anything but itself. Once I get the replacement from Mike it will be a quick swap. and I want this tractor done right. I now have the shroud holes slotted so I only have to loosen the bolts and slip it off and back on instead of removing them. I do that to all my engine shrouds. As I mentioned earlier the muffler was a possible cause. I doubt it but to make sure I garbaged it up with this thing I had on the shelf. Ugly but it will do the job intended. A test muffler in lieu of the old catalytic converter test tube. I found out that the original exhaust nipple on the engine is a fuzz larger than the usual 1" pipe size. The threaded hole is 1" but the nipple where the factory muffler clamps to is larger. I did have to fight it a bit. I made an O'Reillys trip and the old test tube thing came up in the conversation with the counter guy. He just looked at me like I was from outer space. I got the deck mounted. The new path is a little over 100 yds long and will be about 7'+ wide. Before it would act up consistently at about 20 minutes of mowing. You could set your sun dial to it. I didn't time how long it took me to make the multiple needed but it was longer than that. It ran fine the entire time. My wife used this tractor more than me and she said it seemed to lack power especially going over the heavier area over the septic field tile. When I took over I noticed it too but it wasn't much. I attributed it to the hydro. Now it doesn't seem to. The weeds were heavier than in the yard but at about 60° it was cooler than a typical summer day. I'm not 100% convinced I have it fixed but I'm very optimistic. Other than replacing the coil baffle with the good one I'm leaving it as is until we do a 'real' test when mowing season gets here. If it passes that one I'll put the original muffler back on. If it passes again maybe I'll start liking this tractor. If it doesn't that will tell me it was the muffler and I'll replace it properly. If it finally becomes a reliable machine I might just treat it to a foot pedal for the hydro.

@Brockport Bill All the firefighters are volunteers, however on the EMS side of things some of the chiefs,EMT’s and paramedics are paid. My department doesn’t have an ambulance or run EMS, that’s a separate entity. We are entirely volunteer.

Had to get a new drive pulley for the transmission. There's just no chance of cleaning the original up to a serviceable condition. It clearly rubbed the guard alot and corroded from there. The outer lip is jagged and just too pitted to work with. The replacement isn't a perfect match but will work fine.

In light of the help I got from this forum, I thought I owed this thread an update, just in case anyone is interested. I actually wrote up a lengthy update in the fall but somehow lost it as I tried to post it, so I'm sorry for the delay. The old wheel horse lives! It was remarkably easy to fire it up again. The tires were another story. It was incredibly difficult getting the old tires off and the new ones mounted. I ended up only replacing the two flat ones, and I destroyed one of the rims in the process (the tire can't seal fully and leaks out slowly). I think I will never do that again. I also found another problem with the attachment of the mower deck that will take a trip to a welding shop to fix, but for now the tractor runs and mows. My son was thrilled to get to drive it and mow a little. Thanks again to the forum!

Bingo, we have a winner. Most came in sets of 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, and one inch pipe dies. You would provide the pipes for handles.

I have reservations on what I’ll do with it. I needed another round hood like another hole in my head. This 701 double pulley engine will be the second one I’ve come across now. If it runs well, I may shelf it. I’ve got a yank start K-181 that came from @wallfish last year that I’d like to put to use. You know, one less battery I gotta maintain… although I just got two good used batteries from @Bow_Extreme a few weeks back. This one is actually kind of rough. The square seat pan has been welded up crudely, the belt guard is worked on pretty hard, the hood has been welded and has a couple funky holes in it, etc. I haven’t checked out the steering, or transmission. There’s a boy across town who watches my YT videos pretty religiously. He’s got a C-101 that he was pretty proud to show me. Funny thing, his mom and Mrs. P are real good friends from school. When I stopped by to visit him one day, it was like he was star struck I’ve thought maybe I would find something I have and see if he wants to come work on it with me some day. At the end of the day, send it down the road with him. This one? Maybe Jane the Commando 6? I don’t know.

I got the shifter out and can see the forks are out of line. Tried to get them to move, rock the wheels, try to move the drive pulley. Nothing. Looks like I'll have to take it apart to see what's bound up. The guy (young man) who kicked the lever is a great person. Treats my daughter very well, I know he likes lawn stuff so I figured I'd let him give it a go. I'm not going to say anything about it, I like him

I tacked up a snow plow mount for my plow truck with a coat hanger once upon a time. I’m pretty sure Uncle Jim won’t ever let me forget that.

That was quite a haul there. The kitchen stove resembles the one my mother cooked on when I was a wee little tyke. At the time our electrical service consisted of a few pull chain lights and a couple of wall receptacles. Time change today!! What kind of moron thinks that you can cut 6" of the top of a blanket, sew it to the bottom of the blanket and think that you end up with a longer blanket??? Any way...Got up this morning and moved all my freshly painted parts into the house. Not sure why, spose to be 50's & 60's for temps all week. But it makes me feel better. With all the parts safe & warm in the house, I moved on to a little assembly. The remainder of todays adventures turned to getting the engine back together. Managed to get a good share of it put together. Depending on my work , ( blankety blanks think I need to be there on a Saturday) I hope to show a lot of assembly progress next weekend.

Clothes washer crapped out so that cut deep into my tractor time. Fuel tank is in, had to cut out the shift gate screws to remove it, stainless replacements went in. New “brown” 7473 drive belt installed. Started to run new fuel line, filter/ shutoff etc…

I had to pick up a trailer on the way home, to go pick up Mrs. P’s estate sale finds for the weekend, and with the front tires being junk I had to get creative to unload. I reverted back to my skateboard days, and let Benny grind his way down the single ramp. With the transmission drain plug sticking out 3/4” from the case, it was a great easy decent to the ground.

I don’t know the answer, but my first inclination is a tap handle. The ends are threaded for pipe “handles”, but what gets me is the thumb set screw on the back. What would it be for?

it's always rewarding to have our next generation children - or grandchildren involved with tractor projects - been fun to have my grandson involved doing some deck rehabs with me - or rescues of some abandoned horses - starting them young often turns into a long term interest for them ... Regarding the tires -- I never had any interest in wrestling with doing the mounting of tires or dealing with tubes and rims -- yes, tires can cost some $$ to have a shop mount, or insert tubes, but i have always looked at having shop do tire projects as long term investment - - and spending the $$ rather than dealing with an unpleasant task - ugh !!!

I picked up a pretty cool oil storage bin this weekend. It’s a 65 gallon capacity and has a dipstick, pump, extra large fill port, and it’s on casters! I have some 5 gallon sized paint strainers to clean the oil going in, and an in-line filter setup to filter it on the way up to the gravity bin storage tanks.

Didn't everybody from our generation learn to weld that way. I know I did.

Great idea as long as you don't teach him to weld with a coat hanger and a rosebud... I've got a 181 sg motor all rebuilt and ready to drop in if you want to trade for the 701 engine. I need a home for the extra double belt guard I have. Really Squonky must you give him crazy ideas!?!?!?

I had this one previously and had no issues. When I first made it, I had it sitting in my livingroom when a local PD officer came by needing me to have a look at some of the electronics in his cruiser. I invited him in while I gathered my tools. When I returned to the living room and headed to the door, he began to say " Is that a...." and then thought better of it and clamped his mouth shut. I let him off the hook and gave him a peek once I had finished his repairs lol

After getting the fruit tree's pruned today, it was like 65° today I got the Wheelhorse washed And got the oil changed, changed the coil and swapped out the sparkplug wire to a non-automotive wire (doesn't have resistance) I haven't got them cleaned up yet, but I am going to get these front wheel weights painted and mounted.

Me and Bets sat on the front deck watching the Bluebirds fight over the box in the font yard. It got to the point where the 2 females were rolling on the ground in a grudge match! No women ever fought over me like that! Then there were the small flock of Turkeys out back. One sat down to have a dust bath, and lost balance and rolled down the hill. I wish I had a video of that!!

I run one of those pepper cans on my 416 - the neighborhood Knows when I’m mowing or blowing snow - there’s and imperfection on the flange of the original and it leaks between the flange and block - tried a gasket just burns gasket out over time . Threaded a short nipple - 45 then straight out with a 6” nipple to the can .

It keeps the round die from spinning inside the unit, sets down in the opening in the die.

Now now KP nothin like a nice LR! I'll suggest a full blown frame off factory paint resto and I would donate some correct parts ... Guess I ain't gotta worry about getting rid of those parts ...

You have plenty going on, and the most important thing with the tractor at least is that you saved it. And having seen it myself, it is a very nice machine indeed! It will be waiting when you get caught up. You take care of business and then you can tinker on the old C160. Best of luck getting your brother settled. Family always comes first!

Got back to work on this tractor. Getting it ready for a plow day Got the snowblower off. Started working on the original carb the jungle carb does work just not as well as I would like. Soaked the carb in the ultrasonic cleaner I got the brass bushing for the throttle shaft fix The throttle shaft has a broken screw in it. Didn't want to deal with drilling and tapping right now I don't have the bit or tap. So got the carb out of the project tractor the Raider 14 which should have had a #28 carb but surprise it did not it, has a #26 carb which after it went through the ultrasonic cleaner the red paint came off to reveal yellow so probably came from a cub 12hp so pulled the throttle shaft out and I will use that on the other carb. This is the yellow this carb also had the idle screw break and the bowl has a pin hole in it so it's a parts carb for now unless I feel like drilling and tapping a bunch haha

The Tecumseh serial number, 7299, says the engine was assembled at Tecumseh "on the 299th day of a year ending in 7". Because of the model of the tractor, we can be sure that means 1967. The 299th day of 1967 was October 26. That's too late in the year to have gone on a 1967 model year tractor. The engine was shipped to Wheel Horse in late 1967, added to the tractor in late '67 or early '68, and the tractor was sold in the Spring of 1968 as a 1968 model year tractor. Scot
