12 pointsI’ve just acquired a new to me 877 to putt around on. It runs (not great) but smokes a lot, has a very cool look, and I love the size of it. I’m gonna cruise around in here and, hopefully, end up with a neat little machine that I can enjoy with my grandson.

9 pointsOn my 520-8 project: Got the transmission input shaft seal in (2nd attempt, destroyed the first seal )…installed fuel tank supports (still waiting on my fuel tank to be shipped).. carefully removed a wire harness from a “doner” tractor that originally had a Magnum 10 that I will blend with the 520’s Onan harness when I land the Kohler Magnum on it.

4 pointsMy principal snow horse is an Electro 16 with a 56" D series blade. It does great work but after only 2 seasons the domed skids were wearing through. My neighbor took the skids to his welding class and just brought me the repaired units built up and ground to shape. Being over a half inch of weld on the wear surface I think these should outlast me (I know you can buy skids but most all are 5/8" shaft. WH used 3/4. besides the stuff you by is not exactly long wearing.

4 pointsYard cleared on the 17th. Wheel horse and plow would not have done this snow. The big tractor with it's 72" blower and four wheel drive struggled. This was very dense hard snow around 16-20" deep. You can just make out the lid of my burn barrel out in the yard. It's been years since we had back to back snow storms like this. Just beyond the burn barrel is the snowmobile trail. I don't own a snowmobile but I let them through my property. The last few years the trail system never opened through here but it is alive and well this year. Lots of snowmobiles use it and the groomer has been through several times.

4 pointsMy MIL would always sneak doughnuts etc. She had numerous health issues and my wife would "nicely" remind her of her diet. She always replied "If I die eating a doughnut at least I'll die happy!" I always said she's got a point there.

4 pointsThere are some pictures somewhere on here Jim. I'm not sure I'll be able to find them. Basically I vented the belt guard and made a sheet metal housing around the area. Then did some nip and sewing to the cab to fit over the housing. The cab was damaged in this area from the muffler heat. I did find this pic. The canvas was altered to attach to this housing. I could get some pics tomorrow. The canvas has grommets that fit over the two 1/4" hex bolts to attach the two. hard to see in these pics.

3 pointsI have had a few people ask if my OTC cab was up for grabs. I have not used it in 3 years because of minimal snow depths in recent years. I am reluctant to sell it for that reason and a few others. It has been stored inside and in VGC. 3 years ago I bought one for my JD for Winter use to get out of the wind mainly. When I ordered it I noticed on the site the Toro / WH cabs for the 300, 400 and 500 series were NLA but were for the 260, 270 & XT series. Was on their site today and appears all of those are currently available. Thought I would just put it out here in case anyone has interest. I have had mine for 25 years and was $$$$$$ well spent and still looks great. The price for the 3,4, & 500 series is $ 1349.99. A phone call to them would be recommended to confirm. Just letting you guy's know. Great people to deal with. Stay Warm

3 pointsI guess I'm the monkey wrench king these days. I'm not saying they're wrong about the RPM. Could be something to it. I'm just saying I've never had an issue idling down an engine even for extended periods so I figure that's one thing this old dog doesn't need to learn. Now the talk about cabs for blowing snow? I'm a wimp. There's no such thing as downwind when blowing snow. I'd definitely grab one if it called my name.

3 pointsI hear what you are saying and it makes sense but there's still something. My 05 liked to bulk at starting after it sat a while. In the summer it wasn't an issue because it never sat for extended periods. I tried the check valve thing but that didn't help and I don't like them so they were removed. As an experiment I backed the tractor up some ramps one winter. Problem all but eliminated. So I went with an electric. Problem eliminated. All my tractors now have electrics regardless of tank location. Maybe there's another way but they work.

3 pointsThank ya sir! I got most of the gears de-rusted, but the case can wait for the weekend. I need to figure out if I need a new bearing set. The 1533 bearings feel nice and snug, so they at least won't get replaced. No major pitting or chipped gears, though there are a few. Definitely some discoloration from water, but not much else. I have seen and used worse, so it's good for the moment. Gotta split the diff over the weekend too. It's about the nastiest part so far.

3 pointsSame here. I don't remember the year, but I bought my cab at the first big show that I attended. I saw the parts cab laying in the corner of one of the barns. I found a young GUY at the other end of the barn and he said it belonged to his brother and he would sell it for $100. Took it home, made a couple of the missing pieces and installed it on my 520H. Several years later at a different tractor show where I had the 520 on display, a tall lanky guy walked up and asked where I got the cab. He informed me he was the original owner. That was Jay Meyers and I had bought it from his brother Guy Meyers. So, I also have a reason to never sell Jay's cab. Rest Easy My Friend @roadapples

3 pointsThat is a later model 8-speed. Probably a "Classic" model (300/400/500 series) just based on the dipstick and drive pulley. Short answer: it will work on an 857, but the clutch/ brake linkages will have to be modified as the 857 used a 3 speed. Externally both transmission models have the same dimensions and bolt to the frame identically, but there are minor differences in the connections to it, as well as the 857 frame not having a place for the dipstick tube.

3 pointsWell we didn't get the snow we were supposed to get. We have a nice ice glazing that will hang around a few days and got a snow dusting. So decided to have some fun in the 5 degree temps and do some spin outs and figure eights!

2 pointsFastenal will require any oil to be drained and the transaxle securely fasted to a skid. Their rates go by size and weight. So don’t make the skid excessively oversized. I suspect you will want to have the dipstick tube and shifter removed and securely tie wrapped to the skid.

2 pointsHigher stack makes for a better draft, but you want to keep the horizontal run as short as possible. The gasses will cool as they travel the pipe, but the heat is what keeps them moving, both through expansion and convection. If you loose too much heat in a horizontal run you loose the effect. If you loose the draft best case scenario is that the lack of draft smothers the flame. Worst case, carbon monoxide is heavier than air and settles out into your work space. If you have to have a long horizontal run it's best to do it with double-wall piping and keep it low. If it's at all possible it's best to locate the unit where you can have at most a short horizontal run and a long vertical. I have no experience with fan-assisted exhaust systems.

2 pointsAny of you guys changing out all of that crappie looking original hardware for the new stuff, save it all and give it to me! I'll get rid of it for ya. LOL A 1960s or 70s tractor can be completely disassembled without striping or breaking a single fastener, try that with the new stuff after only 10 years! That older hardware is much better quality.

2 pointsI just parted out a C161 that someone had put a 310-8 hood on. Just change the upper dash and hood. The lower hood stand is basically the same.

2 pointsA little history on how I acquired the OTC . I was looking at a local classified add back around 2001-2 and came across an add for WH parts that included the OTC, Kwik-Way weight box with brackets and hardware to mount it without the loader frame mounted. The loader frame and and the rear 520- H rear extension for a 1991 with the forward swept axle to use with a 48'' dozer blade that I had for the 312-8. Also some misc other small parts. Stumbled on this because the Gentleman I purchased it from had just bought the house with all these parts left in the garage and had no use for them. Don't find that too often. @WHX??

2 pointsThat turned out great! But how was the INSIDE of that tranny drier than the outside??? My 701 transmission had literally almost no oil in it, but had clumps of grease everywhere. Literally squirts from a grease gun, I assume through the shifter hole. It looked like bird droppings. I guess the PO had no clue and thought it would be better than nothing.

2 pointsGood thread Plunger. I have a cab on all three of my 520 sno movers. The one at the love shack is/was for a C series but bought for 50 from a guy who had it on a '67 model. Wasn't too hard to modify for a 520 ... couple of fabs of 1/2" conduit for brackets and no bump out for the chute turner. I don't have Ed's mod but do have vented belt guards and still get some heat up in the cab. So true same here.

2 pointsBreven I have one but really don't want to let it go. Ear marked for a project. Lemme dig around some may have another. Guessing this is a small diameter one. They are quite common and should be easy to find. Large diameter not so much. Check with A-Z & tell the old man next time before he wants to break one there is a work around for getting the cap on a ovaled one. FYI these would love to see some pics of your Amigo and the Panzer. Post them here. https://www.wheelhorseforum.com/forum/6-other-brands/ For those who don't know this young man he and his dad have a fine collection of restored Cubs with some oddballs thrown in for good measure. Regular exhibitors on our show circuit.

2 pointsNice! A bucket list tractor for me. With the hydro an excellent blade tractor. Looks to be the correct tank Bill just not in the correct position. It can be a bugger to get down in there right with the gas cock attached... impossible with a sentimental bowl. Hopefully not missing the hold down strap but that should be an easy find. Cancell that just saw it hanging ther. Let us know if you need help there. '67 short frames did not have a angled pipe but strait out with a long enough nipple. Interesting wheel weights have a pair just like them.

2 pointsWelcome! Find the correct fuel tank and add an angled pipe elbow for the muffler the hood will latch. Speaking of latches - WATCH OUT for the seat pan latch releasing when you do not want it to! More than one RS Member has been pitched off the back! Fix that dangling wire, add a ground from the hood to the frame. You have a nice project tractor there. You may wish to look over the "New to Herd" thread geared to new WH owners.... Got questions?? 2 pointsThat was a "field find" through word of mouth. The seller said it had been setting for three or four years because he broke the spindle when he hit a stump and bought a new Simplicity Coquest. It came with a barely used plow, a solid 48" deck (save a broken spindle), original rear tires and wheels with OEM wheel weights, chains, and a grader blade...no way I could see getting hurt even if the machine was junk. He did drain the gas and ran the carb dry when he parked it. Well, I'll be. I got everything home and, without much hope, dragged it into the garage, hooked up the jump pack, poured a bit of gas into the carb, and it fired right up. Put some in the tank, and it ran like a clock (other than about 100 acorns flying out). All the gauges worked fine, as did the idiot lights. A project was born! I purchased the cool decal kit from RedoYourHorse. I want to add that the OEM Wheel Horse paint for the newer tractors looked like it had a better/smoother mirror-like finish with very high gloss, but the spray head was a horrible haphazard and spatteres pattern, where the Rustoleum sprayed with an easy to control flat vertical pattern just like my LVP and was so close to the Toro I chose that. Very happy once it finished laying out for a couple weeks. Of course the prep was a PITA, requiring puddy in some areas to hide pitting as well as wet sanding the primer with 800, but as we all know, it is the most important part of a nice finish.

2 pointsI set the idle by what sounds good and ride around a lot at low RPM. There's still a lot of airflow and plenty of splishy splashy as that dipper hits the oil so many times a second. It's never caused me an issue in over 6 decades. Of course most PTO driven attachments should be full throttle Not a sickle bar though. I'll use it several hours at a time with the throttle just above idle.

2 pointsI guess facts are just so hard to come by these days. News feeds that spout whatever gets the most views and the loudest voice (usually with the biggest wallet) drowning out everyone else. We just have to trust our own judgement I guess. And hope that things don't get destroyed by those who show extremely poor judgement despite being trusted not to.

2 pointsI have used that before as well with good results. As already said, it's not as fast drying as regular rattle can, but it's got higher gloss and seems to be reasonably durable after fully curing.

2 pointsA few of us, myself included, have installed the C series 8 speed in early Round Hoods. So has @Pullstart on his 502. From memory, here is what I had to do on my 854: The input shaft is 5/8", not 3/4" like the 4 speed. You need a replacement pulley with the outside diameter of the 4 speed one, but with the 5/8 keyed bore. I got mine from McMaster. After changing the pulley, the stock 70 inch belt acted too long - had to get one 69" long. My 854 has a fixed seat - the dipstick tube and dipstick had to be shortened about 3-3/4 inches to allow the dipstick to be removed. Cutting the dipstick - start off with the Unidrive filled to the original full mark, shorten the tube and dipstick, assemble to find the new "Full" line. I used a trianguler jewelers file to put a fine line on it. Brake linkage - the 8 speed band is pulled, not pushed to activate. Got the link from a Raider 10 - worked fine. Note: could not hook up the parking brake, but 1st gear in Low Range is almost as good. The hole for the HI-Lo lever - I painted the top of the shaft protruding up with grease, set the tin on it to get a transfer mark. Drill a small - 3/16" or so - starter hole thru, reassemble & adjust if it is not centered. The use a 1" hole saw & cut thru. I reused the 4 speed shifter and shortened the Hi-Lo lever. Looks like you need a new shifter boot - is there any moisture inside the Unidrive?? Doing a 6 speed swap, like @Handy Don did on his 854 is easier - input pulley & brake are the same as the 4 speed. there is no dipstick or tube to cut.

I took my C100 out just now, it has a CHT gauge on it, it normally runs 270⁰-280⁰ mowing in the summer, but the ambient today was 50⁰, i fired it up, checked idle speed which was 1206rpm, and set low idle for 16 minutes, the temperature had stabilized at 195⁰-197⁰ for a few minutes, thats well under any kind of dangerous temperature.

1 pointProbably more and probably no longer available. Sorry I’m a bit frustrated with Kohler right now. Please please don’t tell folks how expensive Onan parts are until you shop Kohler parts. For comparison P220G Onan piston and ring set .020 over is 159.00 and that’s for two pistons with rings. Kohler M20 .020 piston and rings are NLA but the standard piston and rings are available. Only 232.00 bucks for one, so 464.00! Seems Kohler makes all this stuff obsolete and then charges outlandish prices. Btw, I had never looked at Kohler twin parts before just now and I just decided I won’t be buying anything with one in it. And I’m not bashing Kohler, they make fantastic engines. But every discussion about Onan powered horses inevitably turns to Onan parts prices. From my brief search and comparison of similar engines it appears Onan is way ahead in availability and price.
