I feel like I'm behind the times, but I put LED's on my horse since one of the old lights had burnt out. Testing in my shed with the lights out it seems better, I guess the first early morning snow plow job will tell me how they do.

Who say's a 420 -LSE can't lay down a patch. Took her for a trail ride today and when I went to put it away the right rear started spinning so I opened the throttle up and watched it spin. Haven't done that since 1999 when I sold my 70 Chevelle SS big block. Boy did that feel good. Doesn't take much to amuse myself as I get older. Can anyone relate ?

I can relate…I try to peel out every time I’m “tractoring” around your property

I did led lamps on my 654. Definitely an improvement. They are really bright. I wasn't worried about originality as its a working tractor. I considered putting led bulbs under the original lenses on my 953 & my 753 HL5 lights but I don't really use those tractors at night.....

I’m not into preservation as much as utilization so I always include in my thinking “What would Cecil do faced with the same choice?” LED is cheaper, lasts longer and gives better light.

Thomas Crapper Day is celebrated every year on January 27, the death anniversary of the famous English businessman and plumber. While Thomas Crapper was not the inventor of the toilet (a common misconception), he did perfect and promote it. While the original flush toilet was functional, Crapper added a dash of elegance to the design. His designs even saved water by adding the ballcock that stops water flowing into the toilet when the tank is full. Thomas Crapper Day is a day of celebration for this man and all he did to bring a revolutionary change in the toilet world. The very first toilets and sewers emerge in Mesopotamia about the fourth century BC. Sir John Harington invented the flushing toilet in 1596. Alexander Cumming and Joseph Bramah create an updated version of the water closet in 1770. Thomas Crapper establishes his company in 1866 and changes the crapper world forever.

If you have points that are driven off the camshaft with battery ignition the plug fires EVERY OTHER REVOLUTION!!! Camshaft turns at half the speed of the crank and only has 1 lobe for the points. Your K301 engine does not fire every revolution unless it uses the breakerless ignition. Your tach readings are not accurate. I went thru the same thing. Had to use a phototach. Spark happens when the points open and the magnetic field in the coil collapses. There is only 1 points lobe so 1 opening per CAMSHAFT revolution so 1 spark for every 2 crankshaft revolutions

I use an optical tach for the most part now, got tired of having to switch modes for cars, hei, small engines. I cut up a few dozen little ashesive squares and keep them in the pouch, stick one on whatever im trying to tach out, point and shoot. Only thing its not quite so useful for is saws, trimmers...there the spinny bits are covered.

Be very careful with that unfinished Wheel Horse being in close proximity to that green and yellow thing. ...They fight when you aren't looking. Might get a scratch in the paint!

Here are some pics of my GT1600 with rubber hoses and how they are ran. Here is the front side of the valve as you would see with the front cover just behind the engine removed. Supply hose is at top left, return hose is at top right and cylinder hoses come out of the bottom of the valve. Here is the supply hose connected to pump outlet at the bottom of the pump. This is how the supply hose is routed on this tractor. This is the return hose routing.

My father was a long hauler and I drove triaxles during three summer vacations from school. I have always had a lot of respect for truckers and go out of my way to aid truckers even stopping and directing traffic when necessary. There is a small percentage of idiots in every group, but I feel the vast majority of truckers are professional safe drivers. A group that I really try to avoid is the rental truck drivers.

I don't care who invented it, or who improved it. I'm just thankful for whomever decided to bring it inside.

This weekend evolved a bit of side tracking. Saturday I took on a job painting the inside of a 26 x 26 x 12 garage. After spraying 10 gal of primer and then spraying 20 gal of paint, back rolling and I don't know how many trips up & down a ladder. Need less to say, I was all in all done for the day. Not the best pic, but it did happen. With making extra tractor $ out of the way, I moved on to my projects. First project this morning, get some heat in my work beater. For the last few weeks the temp gauge has hardly moved and the temp at the heater vents has only been reaching an average of 74 degrees. Perfect for traveling in sub zero weather. A new thermostat and now the temp gauge runs more towards the center and the temp at the heater vents is reaching 134 degrees. MUCH BETTER. Should make my commute more bearable, Now on to some tractor stuff. First off take care of the previous repairs that were done to the 3/4" foot rest bar. Not poo pooing the repair, it kept the tractor in service. Not sure what happened to render the need for the pipe welded over the right hand side. Guessing the left side must have broken free of the frame. After a bunch of grinding the old bar was out of the way. New bar burned in place. Just to make sure there will not be future issues with this bar, I also added some gussets to it. After that repair I still had some time to degrease and blast a few parts. All the excitement that I have to share for this weekend.

I just replaced the hydro hoses a few weeks a go on my 1983, C175 h ---- and last year I did the same job for my 1984 C175 h .. it is a nightmare job -- not fun and many bruised cut knuckles ( and a few nasty words ). The photos from Cleat's post are excellent -- better than those I could send. I found it very difficult to locate the leak from under the master valve so I just kept cleaning and then monitoring -- still hard to tell if it was a fitting, a threading, or an internal master valve O ring, or a hose or its fitting O ring???. I determined it was best to remove the master valve and replace its internal "O" rings as well as replace hoses --- I hate doing any job twice and because the job is nasty I only wanted to do it once -- and although expensive $ to replace hoses and fittings that was my choice. I found removing the battery and the front access plate on the engine side was best - - as well as removing the lower dash plate and the tunnel plate - plus lots of light and patience. Probably re-inserting the bolts that hold the master valve in place was most challenging. The new hoses were stiff so getting them threaded placed through the side panel access was also a challenge. Did my snow plowing few days ago and so far all good -- let's hope its a one time project - - UGH !!

I just put LED's on my 416 and they seem great. I will do them for my 312 next. Much brighter. I didn't get the super bright ones as I didn't want them to be blinding. I got the 9w 3000k. Just want to light up the work area well and let cars see me in the dark if ever needed.

I hate to say it, but Redsquare contributes as well- albeit indirectly. On more than one occasion I've had uninformed sellers claim this site and it's membership size as a reason their rusty/ non-running/ 4 flat tire/ missing the seat machine is a collectible. Not that any of us do anything to artificially inflate prices. Our very existence is easy to Google...

Yep, I get the confusion and you are onto the situation. Rectified full wave 20 VAC (absolute voltage from -10 to +10) with a voltage regulator would surely be adequate to charge a battery. Rectified half wave is a different matter, if it is the wrong half, depending on the VR. If the absolute voltage ranged from 0 to minus 20, that can still show as 20 VAC but, depending on the VR design, might not deliver ANY voltage to a charging circuit. The usual expected stator output goes to 40 VAC with absolute voltage from -20 to +20. Hence why I suspect you are seeing only the wrong half of it. Of course, I could be half out of it here!

Similar story, but the inside bathroom was only for Nana or emergencies. Everyone else went outside. The door on theirs faced out over fields and hills--a lovely view--so my aunt and Nana always left the door open while visiting!

Besides a split hose, the other leak points are the hose ends that have an O ring seal and an O ring at each end of the control rod in the control valve. These leaks tend to be slow drips when they go bad.

Can't address your tac readings but that engine is as Squonk said above. ( I do know that digital multimeters frequently give flaky readings on Kohlers something about the electric aurora) I use the infrared tacks and my favorite is this one. Can't beat mechanical

I do not think so. The Flywheel part number for the 10 amp breakerless is different tat 15 amp system. The 15 amp stator is bigger diameter You can see the difference one in front is from a 10 amp breakerless 15 amp regular and breakerless in the back. I do not have a 10 amp regular stator to compare

Some pics **** may help. The fourth line you cant see from outside goes down from valve through the motion control are and to the bottom of the charge pump. The steel line from top of charge pump (right side of tractor) goes down to the bottom of the trans axle

In the last week, I started from our Mo. location, drove to our MI. location to check the house and empty the PO box, then returned to Mo. by way of out Ky. Logged about 1700 miles. Swapped vehicles in MI. and delivered dome things to our son in Ky. Also tinkered with the projects we have going in our Ky. 20 acre wood. Pulled the carb and distributor off of E J the 8n for rebuild this winter. Adding to the driver comments about not driving with considerations. On the way to MI. I ran into some lake effect snow after dark - about 100 miles of it. The roads were not terrible, but they had a light covering of snow. Temps were below zero, so salt was not working. The snow was light and powdery, with enough wind to keep it moving around. Comfortable driving speed for me was about 45mph. Comfortable driving speed for many semis, however seemed to be between 50 and 60mph, producing an instant whiteout of blowing snow when they passed. Today on my way to Mo., while I was in the fast lane in line behind a slower car or truck making a pass, I had a few semis running well over the speed limit charge up uncomfortably close behind me. I've got to wonder what those drivers are thinking. Yes, I understand they have a delivery window to make. Yes, I understand that conserving momentum is part of driving a truck. Yes, I understand that 80,000 pounds of truck and cargo probably have better traction than my minivan or pickup. Yes, I know that truck drivers deal with smaller vehicles doing unpredictable and dumb things everyday. But, I've got to believe that a driver can see a slow traffic ahead situation developing in time to not use up cushion space before slowing down. I'm also convinced that some drivers of any type of vehicle think that tailgating the last vehicle in a slow line of vehicles will somehow make the slow guy in the front of the line speed up. I'll pull into the slow lane, if it is clear, and let the next guy in the fast lane worry about the tailgater. I'm finished with my now.

I’m one of those guys that paid up for a nice 420-LSE, didn’t overpay but I believe I paid what it was worth. As a matter of fact it really wasn’t for sale, but the original owners widow wanted it to go to someone who would take care of it the way her husband did. She knew what it was worth and we both agreed on a fair price. Personally I never thought I’d own an LSE, but when one becomes available to me with 17 original hours and it’s signed by the man himself Cecil Pond I knew I had to do whatever I had to to make it happen. I sold some things that I wasn’t using anymore, and worked a little harder to come up with the balance. Would I lay out that kind of money again? Probably not, but I am a Wheel Horse collector so to me this is the pinnacle of my collection. I too see some of the prices people ask for these things and just shake my head! Since I purchased my first Wheel Horse brand new in 1984, I’ve bought a few, had some given to me and even had three left to me by two separate gentleman in their will! I’m not in this hobby to buy and flip them to try and make money. As a matter of fact I probably should sell a few as having twenty is a little ridiculous! However, this is my hobby, it’s what I do and having nice tractors makes me happy 😃. When it does come time to downsize I would love to give some of them to a kid who could properly take care of them for the next generation to enjoy. And the rest? Well I’ll worry about that when the time comes. God Bless everyone…….

I have redone 2 non-runners, one rat one "nice", had a blast doing it and riding them, then sold them for a slight loss... worth every penny. Never expected to make money... Have also purchased 3 pretty rare 's... weren't cheap due to their relative scarcity... batteries etc... again sold two at slight loss but loved learning about them and using them... very cool! Profit? Never expected or anticipated it... Just a great hobby and a great way to get kids working on and using tools and machines...

I usually by junk, throw a lot of cash at it to make it pretty & right again. Then I try to figure out where I'm going to store it. Never really tried or wanted to sell any of them.

Maybe that's why people turn into collectors - not being able to recoup the money they've sunk into making a tractor right.

Pete, I don’t see any of those skids having springs mounted to support the weight of the plow on the skids, nor do I see any value in having the plow bounce on springs and thus not have consistent contact with the surface being plowed. Is your goal to somehow treat the plow like an automobile suspended on springs? To what end? Ride comfort for the blade? I cannot see the blade being better at its job when it can bounce. Several of the offered skids do have lower stops or other means of adjusting the skid’s vertical position but that is essentially the same as using a sleeve and setscrew as the WH plow does. Allowing the skid vertical motion well below blade edge, and thus dangle below the raised blade, makes no sense to me at all. I think you might be proposing a solution in search of a problem.

Statistically speaking that is of course, quite true. The catch for a lot of companies is that, a violation on any DOT number affects the entire company as a whole. Like if I get a speeding ticket for instance, my license of course is affected but so is the entire company across the entire United States and the entire range of every driver in my company. The other issue is perception of the public. I'm just as guilty of this as anyone else I suppose. If I see one truck do one thing stupid from one company, I might be a little bit too leery about that truck color the next time I see it.

I agree you do have to watch the shipping, but that $147.60 is for 2 tires. So it is cheaper, even with the shipping cost.

Put new hubs, wheel and tires on my D200. The old 18 x 8.50 x 8 tires had some cracks and made steering very taxing. The odd ball wheel bearings were going to be a future problem. Hardest part was mounting the tires, 6pr trailer type, they have very stiff sidewalls. Other PIA was seating the dust caps on the new hubs. Once it warms up I have to attack a triaxle load of 2B stone...
