"worth " is only something we can each individually define -- if it's monetary worth then think of it like any asset -- a depreciating asset or appreciateting asset - - is it like your house - your car, a stock, a c.d. -- or a piece of equipment or tool ?? Like buying a table saw, your chain saw -- or a leaf blower or drill motor -- ?? if you bought that tractor and it serves as a productive "tool" or piece of equipment over 10-20-30 yrs - - just do the math? What was average annual cost amortized? then you can decide what that tool "cost" you and what it cost per yr ? then you can determine its "worth" ???????? When i was working in my career i found coming home after challenging day that i loved mowing the lawn on my 312 -- total relaxation, totally mindless activity, best therapy ever - no phone - nobody asking me to solve a problem, or make a decision -- YES, i loved my job/career but that tractor had a worth beyond its cash cost -- and that was mowing in my own little solitude -- so when defining "worth" --- my 312 was worth LOTS beyond what $ it "cost" !!!!

For the past 5 or 6 years, I've been putting together a model train layout in the basement. I hardly look at it during the summer but once it becomes jacket weather I'll begin thinking about spending time downstairs. I made a mountain range a couple of years ago and have been wanting a stream. I started on the stream today. I'm extending the mountains to the valley below and going to attempt to get a semblance of one of the small rivers we saw while on a cruise to Alaska this past October. The woven cardboard provides a foundation for the paper and plaster material. The stream won't have water. There are several ways to "make" fake water. I leaning towards the toilet paper water. The second picture is my inspiration for my stream. I'm leaning towards a trestle bridge something like we saw in Alaska.

I know Uncle Jim @WHX?? keeps a log of everything he pays for all his tractor stuff. Purchase price, cost of TP on the trip to get it, etc. I know how much I have into the RJ35, Lever Steer and Senior. The rest, I kind of let it roll. Maybe because ignorance is bliss? Maybe I don’t want to know what I’ve sunk into this hobby! We could easily be throwing it away on worse addictions…

Nope. Now you have a machine that will last another 30 years. Try that with one of those big box mowers. Your tractor likely listed for upwards of $4,000.00 when new, and that was in the mid-80s. I’ve had about 16 or so Wheel Horses, now down to about 7. Makes me wonder how much I’ve spent collectively on my herd… Nah, I don’t really care. I’ll never get it back, and I’m good with that.

It is you Wheel Horse and your choice. In my opinion a real nice survivor like that should be enjoyed as is. Restoration wouldn't improve it and would remove sixty six years of character.

About finished found a correct hood and refinished it......need to get a correct steering wheel maybe new headlight lens. Engine overhauled 10 over and under, new valves, guides were in spec per machine shop, and (I am sure this will elicit groans) new balance gears and shafts. The last 341 l left out the balance gears and the vibration was too much for me...it is on long term loan to a neighbor. Terry's decal really make her look better than she is... my paint job is 50/50 Only issue...not sure what to do with her...don't really have a use for her.....

Mine tried to climb the house. I'd think a tree would be just as easy.

It's an RJ-58. Same tractor as a1959 and none of them were ever badged 59, but they were built in 1959.

I can sit and watch someone else's train for way too long. Been that way as long as I can ever remember. I've had a couple small layouts when I was a kid but probably not since my early teens. For a long time I thought it would be ridiculously cool to have one circling the upper foot or so of the great room upstairs in my house. Not likely I'll ever do it. But it would be neat.

I had to quit doing that a few years ago ... SWMBO found my ledger ... Just gotta keep reminding them you could have blown the coin on many other vises. Signed: I blew most of my money on tractors ... the rest I just wasted.

All of my WH tractors I have more into them than I could get back by selling them. The fact there's so many solid running WH tractors still available keeps prices low and all of us happy.

Aside from the rocking the tractor back and forth, that is exactly what I did this morning. It seemed to have worked! Unfortunately, I didn't have time to start her up and test it out but cannot wait to get home to check it. I'll keep you posted. Thanks!!!!

Thank you Don! It definitely would have been nice to have made money by the hour on that one. My FIL had several ideas as did I for making this work. He had an older gentleman tell us both that it was impossible to make it work this way for any decent period of time, so we simply had to prove the guy wrong. Two years and dozens of loads of leaves later- she’s still working!

Built one for my FIL a couple years ago. I don’t have pics with the hoses attached. Bin is from an old Kubota system to make dumps easy. He picked up 10 loads today with it. Gotta move the hoses around one of these days, move them to the center so the hose flexes less- but so far it works great. The vacuum works off the PTO as well. His only complaint has been hitting the hitch with his knee when not using the bagger. It’s all held on with a Reese hitch, so one pin and it drops off, but he tends to leave it on year round.

I bought my very first wheel horse and I dont know much about them. I collect the old cub cadets of this era and no a lot of cubs. I am hoping someone can help me out identifying this tractor. The family I bought it from bought it in 1972 and its always been indoors. They believe it is a 1957 but there is no serial number tag. They lost all the manuals as well. The engine tag is still on there. Looks like kohler k91. I believe the tractor is a 1958 or 1959 from comparing pictures. What do you guys think? Should I attempt to restore this, just have fun with it the way it is, or stick to cub cadets? The inside of gas tank is spotless. Appears the machine was taken care of.

Looks like you are doing a great job. There is a gentleman in my church who has been expanding his train layout for the past twenty years. It started out in a corner of the 1800 square foot basement of their house and now it is up to about 1200 square feet. There are mountain passes, trestles, tunnels, grade crossings with functional crossing arms, just an amazing amount of time and effort. Ben a few years since I last saw it. Last time I asked him about the trains he said he has an elevated control console where he can view and operate all eight train lines including a street car set-up and a roundhouse that allows him to move an engine from one line to another. Love to look at things like this but don't have a passion for them.

Imperfections like those pits give a restoration character in my opinion. Weather will probably be working against you till April.

@ebinmaine @Handy Don, I’d believe them now. I started climbing over the pile a few times. It was a night and day difference. If this pushes snow like it does this pile my four wheeler with a plow is staying in the basement garage. I just realized that is it odd that all three of us are talking about variations on climbing up something made of wood with a tractor?😁

friend of mine owns an excavating business and ordered a large item - so an 18 wheeler recently pulled the truck into his property with the item and out climbed from the tractor a young girl in her 20s -- so my friend had chat with her -- she's making over $100,000 per yr while many of her friends and former school mates who went to college make half that annual $$ and have huge college debt -- Amazing how the world turns?????????

No.... but I don't know if ot really matters much.. Very easy to do. All simple tools. NEED to fix...no. But you should just do it to avoid future issues. Or... Remove the whole PTO bell, linkage etc. IMHO... NEVER EVER get anything on the jungle or fleeebay that you can get freely from one of our own vendors. Personally... @Greg Cullison I'm with you, was confused at first too. What bothered me so far is running with 10w30 in the hot summer seemed problematic. Burning oil and I noticed more leaks from old gaskets, which has happened to me with older cars and using lighter oils in the past. Seems many are using 30W all year and are fine. I'm not far from you - Bucks County PA - but my tractor will be in an unheated shed. Planning on just warming her up longer. But we'll see!

I agree with this (see bottom) and plan to do the same but whenever I look at the chart from the manual, I start to second guess...??? Does anyone have other thoughts? Straight 30 vs 10W40 vs 5W20?? I am in Southern PA near the Maryland line and the tractor is garage kept. The weather/temperature has been a little unpredictable the last several years which makes following the manufacturers recommendations difficult.. I do plan to use the WH 312-8 to plow snow if we get any.... ("The oil viscosity has a lot to do with how long to warm up. The manual will tell you to run these engines with 30 wt in the summer and 10w-30 in winter (if you are in a cold climate). I run 30wt all year because my tractors are garage kept and I always warm them up before plowing snow. I don't think I have ever had to move snow when the temp is below 15 degrees. Most of the plowing of snow happens in the high teens and 20's.")

The rear rock shaft offers some features compared to a direct cable, but relevance depends, for sure, on the application. It can provide leverage to convert a long cable pull into a shorter stronger pull at the rear lift It can make it easier to attach/detach a rear lift implement, like a tiller, that does not use a slot or sleeve hitch It can help keep the mid-to-rear cable routing and force aligned with the guide tube

1858 Remington! Been working in this off and on for 3 years! Finally have it working properly. Cylinder spins, hammer spring and trigger working good, ram lever works well.

Check you stator output and charging system as below. Probably will need a new regulator if so make sure it is well grounded...

Look at it this way. You could have done better but you could have done a lot worse too. Go see if you can find a brand new excellent quality garden tractor right now. They no longer exist. All the money that you have put into that 312 is honestly, negligible. It's just maintenance items. So you've got $1,200 into a tractor that you couldn't replace for five times that or a lot more. I'd call it a win. Did you learn anything? Even better. Did you enjoy what you did? Even better. Is it a tractor that's going to give you a lifetime of service? You bet it is.
