7 pointsSpent a couple hours deliberating and experimenting on the hitch pin for @Maz91 's 1971 8 speed. It would move... just a hair... either way. I set the penetrating oil to it and got out some tools. I've read multiple times about drilling out the center and driving the punch through to the opposite side. I used a hand file to remove the bunched up end of the pin from some previous owner attempts at movement. Set a center punch hole and commenced to drilling. I tried a few different bits and a few different holding techniques. Eventually I won. Here's me in drilling motion with the chickens checking in on me.

6 pointsThis morning was our remembrance parade to mark the fallen in all conflicts. I was very proud to be asked to lay the wreath for our community garden. I took part in the March down to the cenotaph and wore my police medals, been a while since I had to March anywhere but it was really good. I'm growing my moustache again, for Movember, but we will see how long it is before Mrs. W orders it's demolition.

5 pointsI vote YES I'll mix up some umbrella drinks and give this to add to his ensemble and we're golden! LOL

5 pointsSo while we were out shopping today the wife drug me into a thrift store so she could look for new-to-her jeans. I got bored waiting at the fitting room line and took a little walk around the store to keep my bum leg from locking up. Near the back of the store I rounded a rack labeled "outerwear" and found something on the end I just couldn't not grab, even though its a bit big for me.

4 pointsJust finished hanging a TV in the bedroom. I don't usually care for such a thing, but with the puppies' sleep schedule we are usually forced to our room two to three hours before we are actually ready to go to sleep. I had what I thought was a flat-screen that I got for free last year, and while cleaning and organizing for the wife's home office I realized that instead of a 30 inch TV it's a 30 inch computer monitor. So while out and about we found a decent TV of similar size for under $200 and grabbed it as that was less than what the hardware I would have needed to make that monitor do what I wanted would have cost.

4 pointsSpeaking of exersize…logged in a few more miles on my bike today. Kinda cold temps but I’m determined to hit 400 miles this season. After today I’m at 383.1 miles. My plan to to try to crank out 17 miles tomorrow and then hang up my bike for the season.

4 pointsHope you get sorted soon Eric! My wife and I had our Covid shots a few weeks ago. I had no reaction at all, but Jane had an immediate reaction. A huge bruise at the injection site!!! The nurse fetched a doctor because she had never seen a reaction like it before. A week later she started to find it harder to walk uphill, etc without becoming short of breath? It got worse, at one point her resting heart rate was 120!!! She spent four days in hospital, where, after numerous blood tests and X-rays, she was told she has a large blood clot between her heart and lungs. Jane is now on anticoagulant medication for the next 6 months and mustn’t do anything too strenuous. So my duties are looking after the horse and walking the dog. So I’m getting loads more exercise. She says that, in herself she feels perfectly fine? The consultant, after carrying out loads more tests, said to her, “It’s your incredible level of fitness and health, for your age, that saved your life”.A very sobering thought!

4 pointsSuper busy weekend here all around and all for good reasons. Thursday I had a treadmill stress test for my heart. The docs are trying to figure out why I can't move uphill or under anything more than medium exertion. It. Went. Excellent. ❤️ is working quite well. I've been given medical clearance to attempt more and more exercise and exertion. I did the first medium sized hike on Saturday that I've been able to tackle in several weeks. Green Mountain in Effingham NH is a great little hike with nice enough views. My pace was 🐢 🐢 slow but I did ok despite the leaves creating a horrifically slippery surface. My fatigue kicked in pretty bad near the top but.. not wanting to go back down the extremely slippery leaf covered trail ... I kept pushing and made it. This is a Colonial era cattle pound that happens to have the mountain in the background. Over the last several days and finishing up today we got the road utility trailer ready for hauling. I have a transmission and something else for @Maz91 and we need to make another rum to my mom's place to get a pile of building materials and some cabinets that were in my father's old office. There's eight "D rings" grade 8 bolted into the interior. All the boards are scrap or leftovers. The only cost was hardware. We've also been stove swapping. The smaller one that was upstairs is now in the basement. The big Fisher Papa Bear we were using down there will be relocated to the new workshop space soon.

4 pointsHoly Sought after Transmission Case Batman !!! We, on this site, have been talking about date codes in these transmissions lately and here one pops up. Your date code A8-9 means your transmission casting was cast January 8, 1959. Which, if original from factory, means your RJ can be called an "RJ-59". Your 58 RJ had to be assembled in 1959. I would bet all of your gears are in better shape (cleaned up) then most of the gears you might buy. It is worth cleaning them up to find out. Know that you do have the older style mushroom gear, which also means you have the earlier differential with fewer teeth. The mushroom gear looks good, but you want to check the teeth on the bull gear (differential). Take the time to go through that "So You Want to Save that 3 Speed Transmission". Every thing you need to know is in there, including Electrolysis. Ask any questions. Welcome to Red Square. Take plenty of good pictures of all gears and shafts to show us what you have. @Jake Kuhn also come onto this site.

4 pointsYou've come to the right place for lots of friendly help and a little kidding around. Like others I suggest cleaning those gears and case up. They don't have to be perfect for a show cruiser. Electrolysis, vinegar, citric acid, grinder sand blast, wire wheel, elbow grease all work. I use them all. Just an FYI, many of the gears in the 3 and 4 speed Unidrive transmissions are the same. But there are some gears that changed the number of teeth and have to be replaced in pairs. Keep us posted. This picture will give you an idea of what gears can look like and still work for a tractor that's only going to be a show cruiser. Its a little noisy but it works and shifts fine.

4 pointsThere is a Community Aid store in Hanover, PA, not far from me. Look as I might, I have never found any Wheel Horse clothing or accessories. (Who would want to give them up?). But I did come home with this back during the summer. Appropriate attire for my dreams of a trip to the islands. And it is very close to Wheel Horse RED. Maybe I'll wear it to the Big Show next year.

4 pointsSame here. No chance to contaminate the oil and if they are located below the fuel tank, no need for primer bulbs or valves to prevent fuel drain back. Batteries and starters will thank you for the instant starts.

4 pointsAll of my workers and customs have electric fuel pumps for two reasons, they work better and they can't contaminate my oil. With gasoline contaminated oil ti wouldn't take long to begin excessive engine wear. A new electric pump will cost about the same as a rebuild kit and will work much better.

3 pointsJust bought a RJ58. Safe to say the transaxle is in need of a gearset. I’ve searched the for sale forum and no luck. Is there any where I can buy these or purchase a complete transaxle. Going to post in the wanted section as well.

3 pointsI think it was time to do something about this leaking lift actuator! I have a spare that I rebuilt last spring, so it was a pretty easy swap. I guess some paint and step tread should be next, but this is one of my busiest tractors. WH Hyd Lift Actuator.mp4

3 pointsYes to all members please don't scrap hubs you may deem shot. Even wallowed ones can be bored & bushed. Keyway no problem.

3 pointsYup, don’t count those gears out until you finish complete disassembly and clean up. Electrolysis is my personal favorite method, but any solvent and some elbow grease will get it done too.
-
3 pointsI responded to your post on FB but you have come to a much much better forum here. Way less stupid comments if we could just get rid of @Sparky ... We can coach you on saving. Rat Rod tranny Dan? Some more inspiration. Did I mention we like our here? Someone put up links to Dino's vids please. I'm up nort with only a dumb phone Eventually went in this tractor.
-
3 pointsIn the picture they don't look all that bad. Before you opt for a new set of gears, give your old gears a good cleaning. Check for broken teeth or bad pitting. You may be able to reuse all or most of what you have. I cleaned this tranny up, replaced all the bearings, & reused all the gears. That was in 2016 & it's still in service.

3 pointsI'm not prone to using cheap safety products but HF has a particular type of gloves I like a lot. They just .. fit.. They're made for TIG welding and much thinner than any stick welding gloves. That's important to remember when handling hot 🔥 steel.
-
3 pointsI rebuild the metal pumps to keep older horses and other color tractors closer to original. But workers go electric.
-
3 pointsAn x ray of my colon surgery came out positive so I will be getting Ileostomy reversal surgery on Tuesday. Three more days in the hospital and another 4 week recovery.
-
2 pointsActually, I thought I'd hang onto them in case I ever needed to fashion up a hub puller. I don't know that I'll ever own another Wheel Horse, but I can't rule it out either. @WHX?? Of course, if someone is in need of them, I would reconsider, @WHX?? I just noticed your location. I drive close by there a couple times a month on my way Jackson, MN (work)

2 pointsI primed all of the body panels except the hood for my b80

2 points...... which is exactly why I want/need to get back into a shape better than whatever this 🐻 has become.

2 pointsHere is the guide pipe for the hand crank You could be pretty sloppy with this and it would still work fine if you were making your own. Its a 1" thin walled pipe with the last 2" crushed flat with a 9/16" hole drilled for the crank shaft to pass through. The angle of the bend is 150 degrees, and the set screw at the bottom is 2" from the end of the pipe
-
2 pointsI cleaned them up with solvent to get then perfectly dry. After that I taped the bearing surfaces off with duct tape and then gave 'em a good cleaning in the sand blast cabinet. Bearing surfaces wear them polished up using oil & Scotch Brite. Yep
-
2 pointsToday, I got the owners manual from my brother the previous owner for the 312. My brother bought the original owners house a few years ago which the tractor went with it. The original owner still had the paperwork from when he bought the 312 new in June of 1992. Oh, and I center punched the sticker on the back of the 312 with the winch on my four wheeler….😬

2 pointsor - "fixed" by someone whose motto was "good'nuff is good'nuff" those will scare you...
-
2 pointsUnderstandable. Keep in mind that whatever you find has been fixed by someone else already. Instructions and advice and parts are all readily available.

2 pointsSoak the bolts with Kroil then warm up the engine. With it hot the aluminum will expand more than the steel bolts making them more likely to come loose without breaking. Replace the hardware with Grade 8 bolts and use silver never seize on them when installing.
-
2 pointsIf the points have a significant uneven wear (buildup on one side and pitting on the other), replace the condenser.

2 pointsI'm hoping these hubs will be reasonable to remove when I go to tackle next Spring's project.
-
2 pointsOr I could go profiteering with it. I bet I can get someone on here to give me at least twice what I paid for it.
-
2 pointsI have one of those too. It sounds like mine works a little better than yours, but yes, there is basically too dark, or not dark enough, and no middle ground. I do like it for cutting work though. I leave it in the Grind setting and I can see what I'm doing, but I get enough darkening to protect my eyes from the torch, and some actual eye protection too.

2 pointsChanged the oil, greased the fittings, got the parking brake to work, changed the air filter, pumped up the tires and washed it. Want to change the fuel filter but need to order it. Gonna replace the headlights and spark plug tomorrow and wax it. Too chicken to replace the transmission fluid or the drive belt...picture before the wash. Gonna wax tomorrow and take another one. 1990 312-8. My first Wheelhorse that I picked up a couple weeks ago...

1 pointI'm sorry I meant Sqounky... That's the easy way out Mike but I get it. In any case please don't scrap them @englertstephen if they can be saved. Heard tell they don't make them anymore.
-
1 pointTaper lock devices are super easy to remove - the same screws that lock it are used in a second set of holes to jack it apart.

1 pointLol my wife heard me singing once in the cab of a snowblower... how she ever did over the roar of the Onan & blower is beyond me.
