Watched my two neighbors farming today. The corporate farmer had half the soy beans cut when an end bearing froze in the head. So, load the head and back to the shop for new bearings. Wait for the end to see my other neighbor. No bearing failures in his 5 HP pulling team.

My brother manages mom's farm in north Missouri. He contracts planting and harvesting. I guess with the technology available, you buy your seed by the kernel or bean because the computer on the planter prevents double planting rows. Although, only 123 acres of the farm are tillable, the work gets done in hours instead of days when dad used a two row planter. Some of our local Amish clans are slowly being drawn into modern conveniences. An Amish grocery store a few miles from home is air conditioned and has compressed air motors running the ceiling fans. They have three reefer trailers air conditioned for storage. A fellow who drives the Amish around said that last summer when it was so hot, the Amish family moved their beds into the empty cooled reefer. When asked why they don't air condition their bedrooms the reply was "That's not permitted." The driver for the Amish took a van load of them to Kansas CIty to visit the Union Station and then to the airport to watch the airplanes take off and land. I know the driver, who attends our Sunday School Class, asks for prayers for Amish children when he has to take a child to Children's Mercy in Kansas City. In this day, it's impossible even for folks like the Amish, to not to be assimilated into our technology driven world--maybe that's not a bad thing. This afternoon, I was talking with a fellow and we talked about hand nailing shingles as mention in another posting. I never did use an air nailer when roofing and early on we carried each and every bundle of shingles up on the roof. My wife loves to tell a story about me when we visited my one and only trip to a casino in Laughlin, Nevada. If you took 5 dollars in gas receipts, the casino would give your 5 dollars in casino money. I spent three of my dollars and cashed the other two in because I was still ahead. When Pam asked me why, I told her "All I can think about is how hard of work it is carrying shingles on my shoulder up the ladder and I'm not willing to spend my earnings here."

As in all groups, there are good and bad. Some of their rules seem contradictory but it works for them. They make use of every minute of daylight and during the harvest season many times they are working well into the night with headlamps. In general, I envy their independent life style. My Amish neighbor bought the farm next to me at an auction about 6 years ago from the Grandson of the Man that I bought my plot from over 50 years ago. The other bidders at the auction were real estate developers. If they had won, I would have moved. We have a great relationship. I continue to mow around the farm and do some critter control as I have for 50 years. He allows me to continue to hunt as I have in the past. I can pick my own produce as needed and pay him when I see him. In my case, It's a win.

A little more work on the RJ Patina Specisl yesterday! closeup of the Wards Riverside for Pullstart! The Kohler K 91 tins. - painted International Harvester Red. I removed the drive pulley that was in this motor. With 3/4 shaft and I have an original to replace on it. Unusual muffler in this Kohler K91 that I am going to keep. I will thread the exhaust end and place 3/4 black pipe with a pepper pot muffler on the end! My patina fender pan looks good on the RJ patina Special and I have a good seat, left cable . I placed a rear hitch on the transmission case yesterday also.

Kinda reminds me of our roofer (old school) hammer and nails. He could have 4 sq. of shingles down before other guys would even be set-up. No equipment to set-up or tear down, or maintain, no gas required or stuff to haul around. Got to admire the work ethic of the old school types. And the modern workers have an investment in equipment to pay for before seeing any profit.

Solenoid in fact is there on the earlier models. Later models moved the relays up under the battery. Connect the orange wire to the same lug as the thick black battery cable. The wire with the fuse is the charge wire and also connects to the battery cable The blue wire from the start solenoid connects to a little lug on the Onan starter solenoid.

Ain't that the truth Jim! Looks like the muff is a stock one that someone closed off the outlets and welded a pipe on? Guessing the block is threaded behind it?

A while back I saw someone in Vermont (?) selling a 520-8 that he’d modded to use a Subaru turbocharger. Video showed it had run at one point. It was a real Rube Goldberg install, though. Maybe he’d planned on a modified class for pulling?

Lots of brands of batteries, but very few manufactures, so it's hard to tell which is the best! I've put battery tenders on all my tractors and snowmobiles and I believe that has extended their life, but I still end up buying new batteries from time to time. My equipment sits a lot in between uses, so I do think the tenders have helped! C-85

One of the RJ tractors I bought several years ago had a great deal of original literature and paperwork 📋 about the sale etc. what I have poster here is the cover for my original Master Catalina (probably 1958). A September 1, 1957 price list and an August 1, 1958 price for RJ tractor and all the dealers attachments, and tractor add ins! I think this is already on the Red Square site in publications etc but I thought I would post again for all you RJ Wheel Horse owners!

East Penn makes a number of brands, some of NAPA batteries are made there. Find any brand made by East Penn and buy according to price. I use 340 CCA or higher, lower ratings are simply less battery. ALWAYS fully charge a battery before putting it in service and keep it fully charged. I bought Duracell batteries for my truck because they were made by East Penn, then made the mistake and bought a Duracell for a Wheel Horse that failed sooner than any I ever used, turns out it was made in USA from imported parts.

would be my guess. If you are ever in the York area, I still have a 54" blade with long frame and axle bracket. PM me if interested.

I use the spring. That said, once the deck is running in operating position with the rear wheels on the ground is really makes no difference. The spring or weight just helps it lift more evenly.

Can't answer that one my friend. Do not buy batteries for tractors through anyplace but NAPA. Have great luck with them so far.

I was honored last year to have my pic on the calendar, and I don’t have a different tractor to take a pic of, so I will sit out this year and let other members submit theirs… So far I like what I see !

I've got it all almost figured out on this beauty. This is fun! In the next week or so I'll change the oil and the transaxle oil, swap spark plugs, hopefully find a working voltmeter, replace air filter, replace the seat, replace a torn shifter boot, get a gas cap with a fuel gauge, touch up paint a few spots, and give her a nice wash down Thanks again all Ive got yet another question for you now! Is it normal for the clutch and brake pedals to not sit evenly when at rest? As you can see my brake pedal (right side) sits much closer to me than the clutch does

This should be highlighted for sure. There is a hump cast into the bottom of the transmission, and the front section will not drain if left level. The front should be lifted as high as safely possible to get the rest of the oil out. If it’ too late, add it to the list for next time. Any good oil in there now is better than bad old oil from before. I have used hilo forks or an engine hoist in the past, to get the front end FEET above the rear end for this reason.

Before I get into this, I want to yell out a big THANK YOU to all the Wheel Horse Forum members who in one form or another contributed to this thread or elsewhere with their ideas. Again, THANK YOU! Kelsey My first photo in this thread, was to be a bit humorous because WH tractor owners have been in the past a bit frustrated in one way or another with WH maintenance. I know I have been. The wooden model was presented to the fabricator shop along with a well detailed set of plans. The fabricator laughed at the model. He said scaled plans were easy to read and understand. Almost 2 weeks later was when the hub puller was ready. Back in early July, I started soaking the hubs with Kroil in all vertical/horizontal positions possible. I wanted to try this hub puller style because I didn't want to break the cast hub. I just couldn't feature the frustrations I'd had if I did. The frame is 1/2" stock with a welded 1-1/8" nut along with an 8" fine thread bolt. Also, 3/4"x8" flat bars were drilled out on center to 1 1/8" to wrap around the shaft prior to final assembly. First photo, the 3/4" stock had about a 1/16" between the transmission and the hub. The Mapp gas torch was on target for almost an hour. The 1/2" plated tweaked a little bit along with 3/4" stock. Second photo, hub is slowly moving. Third photo, torch back on 30 minutes or so and then moved. Fourth photo, hub just about off. Fifth photo, different angle. Sixth photo, hub's off. Seventh photo, 3/4" stock is tweaked. Reversed on 2nd hub removal. Eighth photo, part's group photo. Ninth photo, overall picture Same sequence for 2nd hub removal. Also, sprayed penetrating oil on bolt prior to be torqued. Each side was ~ 2 hours by hand torquing along with 6-pound hammer for persuasion. Next day or so, I think the keyways popped right out because of the Kroil. The only modification I'd like done is to replace the nut and bolt with an 3/4" ACME rod and nuts. It appears that the bolt is galled. I enjoyed doing this arduous task out in the 90' weather along with those treacherous mosquitos biting me in those places where I couldn't reach. My bride helped me out too. Man, I love her!

Went Poly on mine and love it. Drilling holes a cinch and works great, can be rotated once, used the existing worn out blade as a guide and brace......
