6 pointsI certainly miss Russ and always enjoyed hanging out at the local engine shows. He made it out to attend them just about as long as he possibly could because he enjoyed being there too. Russ was an very interesting man and always positive about everything. Rest In Peace Russ, we will always miss you!

5 pointsI got deeper into EJ the 8N today. We've had this tractor in storage for a few years near our KY. location. Wanted to wake it up and use it on our property a little over a month ago, but no fire. At the time, I noticed that the charge wire between the alternator and battery was crispy. The general plan was to come back and rewire it. I started today by getting the alternator tested. It passed. While I was removing the alternator, I noticed several other things amiss - the coil was not seated on the distributor, the wire on the #2 alternator terminal was not fully seated, not all of the spark plug wires were fully seated in the distributor, and probably the biggest issue, what was the on/off switch the first time I owned the tractor was not connected to anything - whoever rewired the tractor for 12 volts, wired what used to be the headlight switch as the ignition switch. Had I known that, we might have gotten EJ started last month. However, he would not have been very safe running with the insulation melted off of the charge wire. Probably just as well he didn't start. Before reinstalling the alternator, I took the time to remove e the distributor. I cleaned the distributor, coiil, cap, and ran a dollar bill through the points. All looked good, so I put them back on. I have the wiring harness about 1/2 out. I picked up a toggle switch to use for the ignition. Spent some time looking at the tractor and envisioning the new wiring harness. Tonight, I'll do more studying on 8N 12 volt conversions with a volt meter. Tomorrow, I'll stop by the auto supply store for a few odds and ends. Hopefully ol' EJ will be out of hibernation by tomorrow evening. Probably ought to drain the fluid in the gas tank that kind of smells like gas and treat him to some fresh non polluted gas while I'm at it. Maybe some pictures tomorrow.

5 pointsLet's not mention that Service Bullitins exist to change out 10 pinion differentials to 8 pinions. In other words, you do not know what you have until you open up the trans case.
-
5 pointsI think I would mount a rear view mirror in there, so I could see my smilling face when I am riding it around.
-
5 pointsDid I not say yayhoo?!?! He sure was proud of that POS... I like the way his old lady was not familiar with the operation of the big tractor. Accident waiting to happen right ther... then again reminded me way too much of mine on the Mahindra...

5 points@Pullstart Took me a minute to figure out what was wrong in that picture: there is only one tractor in the bed of your truck!

4 pointsThis. I leave spiders alone because they bother me a lot less than their food does.
-
4 pointsA. Sticky patches will catch spiders and a lot of other things. B. Use great caution eliminating arachnids lest ye be saddled with what they were eating.
-
4 pointsHere is what you might be confused about. There are actually 3 different Wheel Horse Limited Slip transmissions. 1. the #5060 is the one with aluminum end plates in the differential. 2. the #5071 is the one with cast iron end plates in the differential. Both of these are 6 speeds..ie...3 forward 1 reverse and hi/low range. The difference between 6 and 8 speed transmissions is the brake shaft location. The 6 speeds have the brake drum on the mushroom gear. The 8 speeds also have 3 forward 1 reverse and hi/low range, but the brake drum is mounted on the cluster gear shaft. (the hole closer to the front of the trans). That is the difference. The #5073 is also a limited slip transmission but is considered an 8 speed because the brake drum is on the cluster gear shaft. You want the #5060 or #5071 because of where the brake drum is mounted. It means less fabrication concerning the linkage because the brake drum is mounted in the same place as your round hood.

4 pointsHe was so proud of the hitch he put on the rear of the tractor....too bad he put it so high above the axle.
-
4 pointsAnd do not overlook the most important - and taken too lightly task - retorquing the head as many times as it takes to achieve consistent torque when cold. Warm up the engine under no load - maybe 10 minutes - let it cool, retorque. You will be surprised that what you did set at "tight" is no longer tight at all. Thermal cycling allows the gasket to compress to its working thickness I did a 6 HP Tecumseh that took seven cycles to achieve the correct torque cold...

3 pointsSpiders definitely help with other bugs... They also provide free halloween decorations!!!

3 pointsHere is the deal...I am going out on a limb here. If you have a hi/low shifter and the brake drum is mounted on the shaft closest to the axle housing (mushroom gear), then you have a 6 speed LS trans. It has to be either the #5060 or the #5071.

3 pointsPromising but not necessarily definitive 😀. A lot of years since new and hood have been known to migrate. a good picture of the brake drum position is what you need. My belt guard says “854” but it has parts from a ‘62 and a ‘71 and an ‘82!

3 pointsWell, last couple days I spent working on the engine swap for the C-101 The pan on the old gen start k301 didn’t have the correct pan with the blind holes under the pan needed to attach to the frame but I had a spare parts motor a k321 that had the correct pan so just a matter of swapping them out. Today I dropped the engine and it fits great.Looks like room for the original Nelson exhaust too. Thanks for the tip on the pan @ebinmaine I most certainly would of done twice the work. I didn’t think of that in hindsight at all. Now the plan is to tear it all back down ,strip and paint it and what ever els needs doing over the winter. A couple pic

3 pointsIf you can find a Six Speed transaxle the clutch/brake hook-up is a piece of cake, The 5060 transaxle was used in 1967 & 68 and the 5071 was used in 1969 Raider 10 & 12. They both have the limited slip differential but the differential side plates on the 5060 are forged aluminum and the ones in the 5071 are steel. Section two of the transaxle service manual shows the 5060 and 5071.

3 points@oliver2-44 the auction just closed out today. I won it for 150! Can’t wait to go pick it up! Its my first round hood. Not exactly the prettiest but I think it will clean up nicely.

3 pointshello all, here we have a roached out 312-8. giving it to a friend. i changed the axle seals as they were leaking. installed a new shifter boot. the gear oil was rusty. drained that. filled the tranny with kerosene and drove around the neighborhood. drained the kerosene and filled with fresh gear oil. changed the engine oil. greased the machine, including the nearly dry pto bearing. air filter was ok. new fuel line and filter front to back. had to replace the left footboard as it was crumbling (very rusty) with a better one from my stash. installed a draw bar from my stash too. not pretty but with a deck i have he should be good to go for mowing next year. regards mike

3 pointsI’m not sure if this qualifies for Side Shot Saturday or Front End Friday so I’m either late or really early! I had to move some tractors around to get out my Peco trailer vacuum for the upcoming leaf harvest, so I figured I’d snap a few pictures! I left them like this for a while so I could walk in the backyard every so often and just look at them😂 When my wife sees me doing this she just shakes her head, and can’t believe she’s been married to this weirdo for over thirty years!!
-
2 pointsthis is the last fourm I got to go Tom I have been going fourm to fourm trying to figure this tractor out its a 1964 model 64a and it keeps throwing the belt and the clutch won't work I have a 63 manual but its not right, I cant figure it out, I have a 31 and 32 inch belt and neither work, I'll add a few pictures because I got it back together. it dosent make sense. it looks neat at least

2 pointsI get a lot of "cob webs" in my garage shop and sheds. I clear them and a couple days they are back. Must be spiders creating these things. I am looking for a way to eliminate this problem. Suggestions please. Marv
-
2 pointsThey like to bury them for later in some symbiotic tree relationship that could turn my yard into a walnut jungle left unchecked. It’s a losing battle though!
-
2 pointsI collect the wretched things just so they don’t sprout and grow more walnut trees. I have a sort of wire cloth drying crib where I deposit them. They do get eaten. But I’m not feeding the squirrels. They’re stealing my nuts! The previous owner used to run them over with his pickup to crack the hulls and spread them on the attic floor to dry. His wife then baked with them. A lot of work, especially when you get a dozen bushels or more of the danged things.

2 points@WH654 bottom line, if you want a transmission with low range, it’s hard to say you could go wrong. Most of us with round hoods and low range, did it before looking around on the internet. That’s the beauty of Wheel Horse. Simple. Tough as nails. Always improving. On the older designs.
-
2 points@Marv experimented this summer glass cleaner , and wasps / hornets , very effective because it breaks down their exoskeleton , literally fall out of flight to ground / dead . was intrigued with the lack of poison aspect , eliminated them from grill areas , window frames , regular Walmart glass cleaner , pump bottle , be easy to try . pete

2 pointsDo you have a few pictures of the underside that might help?? Might there be a tension pulley that is missing?? Maybe a couple of pictures of that 63 Manual (even though it is not correct) it might give us some ideas. Does it have a mower deck?? Cute little guy !! Have you tried MTF (My Tractor Forum) ??
-
2 pointsYou need model 79355 plus the 100-3390 rear hitch. Keep an eye out for New Holland models as they are the same. Do not know the numbers.
-
2 pointsI'm showing 2 1970 Raider 10s. One with the 6 speed LS and one with the 8 speed LS. It will depend where the brake drum is. If ii is in the hole closer to the axle housing, that is the one you want. If it is in the hole closer to the front of the trans, you can use it, but you will have some fabrication of the linkage. 1-6041 may be the one you want to check. Something is not right with the list I have...a typo I think.

2 pointsWell, it's the end of our Portsmouth odyssey. Couple more museums ticked off and the Nelson gallery where we saw a lot more about the great man. There are many portraits of him but all quite different, some painted to make him look more physical, or more heroic etc. But they have done research and come up with a wax work that is about the best rendition of him at the time just before his death. He was tiny, well compared to me he was. 5 feet five inches and pretty skinny from all the diseases and injuries he suffered from. I'm six feet two and I wonder what Nelson would have thought of the 18" shell I'm standing in front of. Probably would not have liked the thought of killing at such long range, no honour in it. The final one is a 15 inch gun breech, my God I cannot imagine this thing being fired. It's impressive but so depressing that we drive ourselves to make bigger and better ways to kill each other. Back home tomorrow, via the model engineering fair in Warwick where I can pick up some materials and tools for my primary hobby.

2 pointsAs @ri702bill noted, I swapped a 6-speed into my 854 and added a front attach-a-matic to which I can load a 40 lb weight. While doing some landscaping, I tried pulling a cart straight up steep-ish hill that had a loose soil surface and had both wheels spin. Hmmm--good, but not what I needed! Put on the chains and it climbed like a goat. Descent was with empty cart and shallower incline. Moral? Pay very close attention to load, balance, traction, and braking. WH brakes are adequate for light stopping but cannot manage heavy loads or steep hills.
-
2 pointsI was just thinking if he wants to pull that trailer he needs a farmall cub sized tractor at least to be safe and then the wife shows up with a compact tractor..........and he was screwing around with that dumb craftsman why???????
-
2 pointsNot to take the shine off, but “limited” is the operative word! It is categorically NOT “posi-traction.” The WH design uses friction within the differential to try to keep both rear wheels turning in the same direction. It is most effective when traveling in a straight line (e.g. for plowing soil or snow). My sense is that the WH engineers did this as a less costly way to claim some of the function of the pricier JD units that had actual locking diffs in the same era. Also, metal-to-metal friction always equals wear so, in my mind, these diffs can wear more quickly than the 8-pinion diffs depending, of course, on how they are used and maintained. One external sign of a 6-speed is the extension coupler on the port for filling and checking transaxle oil level at the rear lower left. The extension permits keeping a higher gear oil level in the transaxle--absolutely essential given the extra internal friction to avoid excess wear.

2 pointsI’m not sure if I could get another in there with that Xi! It’s massive!

2 pointsI can’t say whether or not he is a modern equivalent to Tesla or Edison or the like because I wasn’t around back then. My kids think I was, but nope. But it’s a bit difficult to name very many in my lifetime that represents so much technical innovation. Whether he had direct input or not, he certainly provided an outlet for someone’s imagination. Not trying to be dismissive @squonk but rather adding another perspective here. This forum is as close as I get to social media. That said I’ve seen what my wife and kids pointed out from twitter. Hard to say something that awful was ruined by anything other than shutting it down completely. Given the amount of censorship forced into everything these days, it’s easy to see why many would welcome a little free speech here and there, and easy to see how those who fear such things will despise it. Of course from a military standpoint, the power over dissemination of information is paramount to controlling a civilization… Attempting to control what a free society consumes in the media and believes to be acceptable isn’t social media, it’s social engineering. Right or wrong, I prefer to decide for myself. We are all guaranteed that right in this country. In short many have played in the road plenty. Some just refuse to do it while wearing a blindfold.

2 pointsGood luck with it. Add a zero to what you paid by the time you are done with it

2 pointsi use a strip of wall/floor base cove vinyl to attach as my deflector material for the 42 rd decks -- it has natural lip curve that works perfect - and i use the carriage bolts with rounded head underneath so threads do not get damaged
