13 pointsOle Ken B hasn’t posted in a while but I’m still kicking and Horsing around. Lately I have been sticking to tractors I have a solid use for. Currently I have a 417 with a Kohler Command 18 I transplanted with Stevebo. I also have an LXI I recently repainted along with a DXI and an Xi that I am currently selling. I just picked up the DXI, although I have had it a very short time I really like it! It has 475 hours on it and it runs fantastic. The 417 wound up with a Kohler Command because a flywheel magnet decided to let loose and put a huge hole in the side of the block. Stevebo came to the rescue with the Kohler Command he had in stock. I’m really glad I went this route, such a smooth and powerful runner. In order, 417 with 18 Kohler Command, 520 xi with Kohler 20, LXI with Kawasaki 20 liquid cooled and DXI diesel 23 hp.

8 pointsSo we have 3 dogs. A 13 year old lab, and two beagles, one is a little over 18 months, the other not quite a year. We also have latching baby gates to keep the beagles (mostly the younger one) contained in certain places, essentially to keep them in the room we are in. So I am sitting here in the living room watching Star Trek with my son, with the dogs in the room, and the gate to the kitchen closed and latched. Then the youngest dog hops off the couch, walks over to the gate at the kitchen door, unlatches and opens it, and walks out into the kitchen.

6 pointsAlright…. Winner of the key rack is @Achto Congratulations! Also I decided to draw a second name for four magnets. @TractorEd you get the magnets. I’ll pull four of them off the display board for you and send them your way. Please pm me with your information and I’ll get these out next week. Thanks again for helping keep this site going. It’s appreciated. first spin #10 second spin #23

6 pointsI converted several decks including this 48" SD. Simple, just attach the support frame to the attach-a-matic and the lift bar. Then position the deck under the support frame and drilll the holes. Here is a pic of how I attached the front to rear leveling rod. I also added two more anti scalp rollers as this deck only had one centered roller.

6 pointsThose who fail to remember their history are doomed to repeat it. Remembering something is not necessarily admiration of it nor reverence. Often times it is to remind us how many horrors we are capable of when we lose our way.
-
6 pointsOurs is too dam smart for her own good. If we want her to do anything she has to WANT to...
-
6 pointsI'm not used to smart dogs. My last one was dumb as a box of rocks. If I didn't want him in a room all I had to do was lay a broom down on the floor across the door way. He was a good dog, but so dumb.
-
6 pointsI’d say Beagles are a very smart breed, but that younger one is slacking. He forgot to close and latch the gate

5 pointsSame thing happen to me but with a steel cable when pulling stumps. i doubt you would wreck the bearing unless you pounded on it really hard which there is no need for. There should have been a thrust washer that goes behind the hub make sure that goes back in. Also don't forget to tape the keyway to avoid nicking the new seal. Most of us use a short pvc pipe of appropriate diameter to seat the seal. Use new set screws if possible & recheck them for tightness after a couple hours of operation. New seals can be had here. 5 pointsThat is very nice of them but don't our elected officials and public employees have some actual work to do on behalf of the citizens regardless of their heritage?

4 pointsWhich they can be quite proud of...couple of bucks for a nylon one in the Hillman drawers any better ACE. 1 1/8 id

4 pointsDogs have roughly forty times more smell-sensitive receptors than humans, right? Heck, when I was a kid, Lassie could smell when her owner fell down a well!
-
4 pointsOur Pomeranian, who is usually not very vocal kept coming in the living room barking her head off. Then she would go in the kitchen & bark, back & forth. Took her out side, thinking she had to go. Brought her back in the house and she started all over again. This went on until I decided to make something for supper, turned the burner on for the stove to find it would not light. Relit the pilot on the stove, Sophie stopped barking & laid down in her bed in the living room. Now when we can't figure out why she is barking, we check the pilot light on the stove.

3 pointsWe've got a bunch of family visiting this weekend. The oak trees have been busy dropping a variety of debris on the lawns to the extent they need sweeping. I used Morgan , the 14-8 to mow what little grass that has grown in the last month or so - a 12' wide strip of grass along the lakefront. Next I got Clyde the C-195 out to pull the sweeper around d both lawns, since it has been a while since he has had any run time. The pre run oil check showed that I needed to add a bit of oil, so I did. Ran him 1/2 hour, maybe 45 minutes. I checked the oil after I parked him - was at the add level on the dip stick! Yes, he burns some oil - light smoke when the governor kicks in - but not enough to lower the oil level that much in that short a time. Gotta be a seal somewhere that has failed. Looks like I've got to put him on the disabled list until I can case this down. One disappointment, our youngest son called and said he has to cancel. Seems he's come down with a case of covid. Bummer.

-
3 pointsI drill a small hole in the metal of the seal on both sides and thread in a small sheet metal screw. Then I get out my small Harbor Freight slide hammer with a hook attachment that grabs the screws and pulls out the seal.

3 pointsGrowing up, our dogs always ran loose. One day, we received a visit from a very irate neighbor - it seems our sheppard mix was helping himself to hotdogs from the grill. When no one was around, he would just reach up and nic one. Needless to say, the rules changed abruptly.
-
3 pointsA few decades ago I had a pet door in the utility room so my cat could come and go as she wished. My neighbor's beagle had a litter of pups and the cat and pups would play together, that was fun to watch. Then one day all three pups follower her in through the pet door and discovered cat food taste better than dog food. This went on for a few weeks while the pups grew bigger. Soon they were to big to come through the cat sized opening and the three of them would sit outside howling for their buddy to cone out and play with them. Once the pups were sold my cat seemed to miss them.

3 points@417-8mule Good luck with your new tractor. If you can become a supporter it is only $20 a year you can post all the picks you like. And full access to this site.
-
2 pointsIf you are a supporter (USERNAME IN RED) of the best tractor website on the internet, you can get in on this. I have one Keyrack and four keychains that I will be drawing a name for on Friday the 20th. Post once here and you will go on the list. Good luck and thanks for being here! (USA ONLY)

2 pointsas usaual my 9 pin was shot. replaced it with 2 weather pack 4 and 5 pin 30 amp connectors, w/ pigtails, soldered and marine grade heat shrinks. my tach, dash lights, headlights, tail lights, and charging system came back to life. who would have thought? anyways im interested in the charging circuit re-route. could some one post a link? whats the benefit? also upgraded dash and head lights to led.... super nice!

2 pointsAfter reading members' inquiries about sources for factory-like identification tags, I'll share what I have done as an alternative. The tags on two of my everyday machines (toys) are intact and legible. I had the model and serial numbers engraved on aluminum military-style id tags and attached them to the engines. I get it that they are not the same as factory originals. These tags will not degrade. They are about .050-inch thick and cost $4 each on ebay. Richard W. id tag.webp

2 pointsThe only charge circuit re route I know of was just to get it out of the nine pin. Maybe @cleat knows more. Pics?!?!?!

2 pointsJust got back from a week at the cabin and got some nice bucks on cameras. Forgot to bring pics back tho.... Next trip. Bow opened the 14th but just ungodly warm. Meat would be spoiled by the time out of the woods. Starting to change colors & can almost can watch them change. I usually don't get the fever till things cool off and leaves are down.
-
2 pointsNice to see you post again Ken and very nice machines. I might be interested in that DXI and might want to upgrade from the 520 HC snow blower machine to one of those If I can find a 2 stager for it.
-
2 pointsHere’s a quick pic of the machine, planning to take the loader off and mount to my 417-8. The c-175 runs great but it’s obviously a series 1 kt17 and I’m not a huge fan of having the hydrostatic control on the same side as the loader controls

2 pointsI do about the same as @ebinmaine only I use a scratch awl to pernitrate the metal ring near the axle housing then pry it out. Just be careful to avoid going in too deep and damaging the bearing.

2 pointsAll beautiful machines Ken! I’m definitely a fan of the re-powered 417. I have a few v-twin conversions myself. They are hard to beat and well suited to a Wheel Horse layout. Smooth and powerful!
-
2 pointsThanks for the tip. I already started destroying it, so I am on the right track. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't picking on the bearing.

2 pointsYes. I use a long thin 1/4" wide flat screwdriver 🪛 to purposefully dent in and destroy the seal. Use care of course to avoid scratching the axle but it's unlikely you would. After creating several dented in areas the seal will spin on the axle shaft. Just pop it right off.

2 pointsGave the 523-H her first oil change today. No glitter in the old oil (5 hours since build), so that was a relief. I was concerned about how dark it was, but then remembered that the assembly lube I used was black. She is dirty already, but ready to work again!
-
2 pointsI’m also posting a second time to voluntarily disqualify myself. I’ve quite a few keychain hangers and turned down the opportunity to buy one at a more than fair price. No reason to try taking one!
-
2 pointsJust wanted to reply "Beautiful work!", but don't pick me or add me to the list (I have so many keychains I don't know what to do with them all, (and a couple hundred keys with no locks) and plenty of keychain racks, so..)

1 pointSparky: Your masking tape approach makes lots of sense for the efficiency of time for flipping tires for the primer and the top coat --- I've used various methods -- one thing i did discover when i do the tape method is to buy the wider tape because i used to buy the narrow role but the wider certainly covers more surface with less labor applying it

1 pointThat hub and axle are toast. Weld the hub on to the axle and run it like it's stolen, ( they already need to be changed anyway plus you can't kill anything more if it's already dead.) And in the meantime, find a replacement used trans so it can be swapped out once you find one and then done at your leisure.

1 pointEver run across Nectar Rock band. They played clubs and collages up and down the East coast in the 80s - 90s. They often opened for another York, Pa. band named LIVE . Right to Left My son Mike Kennell, lead guitar; Hardy Hill, drummer; Caroline, vocals; Dave Henry, bass. Dave suffered a fatal heart attack at an early age resulting in the band disbanding. Mike is married to Dave's sister Libby and they operate the family HVAC business started by libby and Daves Grandfather Wilber Henry. Hardy Hill went on to star in some early episodes of the Big Brother TV series. I lost track of Caroli The volume was a bit high for my ears but we had some good times following these kids back in the day.

1 pointThis is a local-ish band that's playing at a very local blues festival next month, looks like something I need to check out...

1 pointAfter using the emower for a while, I have decided to try something different with motor control. I bought a speed controller to install in the spring. I hope to make it a bit more efficient and take the stresses off motor and mounts by starting slower. It may be a waste of money and time, but will be easier on brushes and drivetrain. Perhaps I can slow the motor and get more running time as well.
