16 pointsThis one sitting in a field rotting away. So I rescued it. Tractor heavy and already have a 856 that needs love and I can't seem to give away. Saw it at a show several weeks ago and it was sitting there crying save me save me. I jokingly offered the owner a frankie for it and much to my surprise he took it. Motor was locked up so pulled it back to camp for a look see. @Achto @Wild Bill 633 and I commenced to wrenching to find out the motor is free but the SG is tight. Got it loosened up and messed with the points. Exhaust valve stuck open ... pop the head and free that up. Fired right off and drives. Service motor and seller says he has the original I could have but knowing him doubt I'll see it. Four year old Battery was stone cold dead... not a volt in it. Threw it on a charger and it did take a charge and seems to be holding it. Surprise surprise. Tires are abit needy but nothing serious. Best part everything is there, original cigar lighter woo hoo, and fairly unmolested. On the splash pad ready for a bath... sheet metal really straight. Seat & hitch worth the price of admission...

10 pointsI'm not usually one who likes to be wrenching while at a show, but this was a fun project. Once we knew the engine was free, I inspected the fuel system to find that it was dry & clean. Given these facts I knew that with a little "field triage" we would be able to get it running. Open cylinder head surgery is usually not recommended in the field, but in this case it was worth the risk. Was great to see the look on the PO's face when Jim drove it by him.

7 pointsI picked this up today thinking it may go to my grandson, but….then I saw it - it’s really nice and I’m keeping it! Sorry kid 🤪 The deck is like new…the paint is good, it’s very clean and don’t ever get me started on the seat
-
6 pointsThat looks like the stage of production where they should have put Never-Seize on the steering shaft and the roll pin that goes through it!! 😂

5 pointsadded end chain mounting stops on my 6" channel aerator frames , allowing me to trap / secure weight chain , for spiker more depth penetration , still use heavy vacuum pump rotors , for slide on trapping to channel upper frame , one mounted , with lift handle is 100 lb , the other one on ground is 200 lb . like ball hitches , fot quick / easy swapping , grandson welded on the upper tray tabs to hold bigger chain . made up a bracket to bolt on older type W/H hitch , bolts right on original single hole mount point .very solid , smooth . made all those spikers from heavy flat steel , more than 30 years of use , still have spares , often refer to mounting my decks to a wall stud , over winter , with a cleaning and fresh oil soaking , just screw in a screw in an eyebolt , hook a heavy extension spring to it , easy to bend up a large S type hook from 1/4" or 5/16 round steel rod . the big end opening makes deck attachment quick / easy , been using NAPA , MACS CHAIN CABLE LUBE # 1370 , for all related lubrication , note oil slick on weight chain , stops rust , also every rotational movement point , note spikers , ball hitch areas . greasy pete

5 pointsBeen busy fixing some drainage issues around the low end of the house. Used a small excavator hoe last weekend. Using the GT-1848 and trailer, and muscle power, to get the dirt back where it belongs.

5 pointsDeck has been welded up, welds ground smooth then sanded. Bottom painted with high temp black because it seems slightly more durable. Topside primered (I missed a bit because I ran out of primer, there was just a little left in the can), then painted. I am starting to get the hang of the spray gun.

5 pointsOver the last couple days Trina has gotten this stove finished up. She ordered a box of fire bricks and cut them to fit using a chisel. Once the exterior coating is cured properly it will be installed in the upstairs of the house.

5 pointsThing I remember most was my 10 yr. Old son standing outside on the side walk holding the flag all day and the passers by honking their horns.

5 pointsJim as fellow 856 owner that seat is the price of admission. Looks savable. Just take your time with it dry it out in a sunny room put some leather conditioner on it and re-pad if needed. I hope you put some time into this one. I did this one this year.

4 points@Pullstart put me onto one of his techniques and I’ve used it since. Two 2”, 6,000 lb ratchet straps front to rear to frame-bolted heavy D-rings at each end. (And yes, an extra $25 on straps is peanuts, gents.) In between, each strap makes one turn around the rear axle and one turn around the front axle. I’ll sometimes add a small strap crosswise. If one of the big straps fails or loosens, the other is still adequate for basic situations. This is unlike separate front & rear straps where if one fails the tractor will likely move. I check trailer tires, hubs, hitch, and straps within the first 30 minutes on the road and again every two hours.

3 pointsI ran across an 856 I just couldn't leave behind also. It is now one of my most reliable machines.

3 pointsIm struggling with that very thing now ! I just wish that guy turned around so I can see his face
-
3 pointsAbsolutely nothing wrong with those tires. They have at least another 5 or 6 feet left on them.

3 pointsSeller mentioned that he has 150 in the seat. Thought is Wrencher after the EB check list is to put a eight inch plow on it and use it for a house tractor at plow day since I sold the no '73 name 8 I had set up. If that happens yah the seat will get swapped out for a beater. Either way it will probaly go on a resto or a more refined tractor. It will get a gentle power washing. The tunnel is filled with dirt and crap but after that just something for the to die for patina. Fer sure leave it rough Mike. Paint has never been messed with. I shoulda got a pic before we moved it. Grass and weeds growing up thru it and filled with grass clippings. Choke and throttle froze up solid so saving those is going to be work.
-
3 pointsThanks Darb. I think I am going to put a plow on it this winter. I was told that these are great plow tractors because of the limited slip trannys. Thanks for the reply.

2 pointsMorning all-long time since I've been over here-and haven't been to the last three/ four shows. Just other things in life, plus getting older-have slowed down some- Anyway-I took on this little project for a neighbor up the road. This lady friend has had this Raider 12 forever, but it has never run right/consistantly. Several people have taken 'whacks' at it- and then it just sat and sat. Anyway-she is borrowing a rider to cut her yard right now-but I told her the only way I'd work on it was to do it right and try to get it back close to OEM. So I have the time-but I'm getting very frustrated with after market parts. Pure junk! I fixed all the wiring/new ignition switch which I had in stock-she doesn't care about the lights-so I let them go. Got the shifter freed up=-put a new boot down there. Get the steering pretty decent again. OK_now to the fuel system-cleaned and drained the tank-new fuel lines/ shut off and little filter. Carb is fairly new,but someone been screwing w/ the adjustment screws. POld metal it was leaking where it goes together....Have tried three plastic ones-one Amazon (two from Napa which seem a little better, but all break or don't work after 30 minutes-I did get it to run about that long so i could adjust on the carb. Now I'm pretty disgusted after returning the last plastic pump to Napa-I'm going to order the diagrham kit for the old metal pump from ISAVETRACTORS and see if that will work. Really tired of screwing w/ this-the little tongue thing on the plastic pumps just keep getting loose and falling out.... I may have to get in touch w/ Wild Bill Pearson who lives fairly close and see what he thinks, if he even fools w/ his stuff anymore. Thanks for any help, and letting me vent. Still got real axle seals to replace and change the tranny oil. Sharpen the blades. C Ya! glenn

2 pointsNot much to report on the 520 but I was able to get my hands on a NOS steering support and a very nice GT-1848 rim from A-Z tractor. Still waiting on a couple pieces like the lower dash cover off a 518H and dial a height assembly since at some point electric lift was added to this tractor which at some point I will probably sell since I don’t need it and it is complete although unrelated I do wonder how “rare” the lower dash cover is since it’s part of the electric lift kit with its pre stamped holes for the switch and it would only fit on the 500 series.

2 pointsThe project has begun! A couple weeks ago I took the head from the parts truck engine to be ported out. It turns out it was cracked. Last night we pulled the cab and stripped the engine down. I’m going to have it bored out and the head ported out to let it breathe. Next I'm going to strip the frame down and repaint it with frame paint and primer.

2 pointsIt is set up to be towed. You can see the tow bar in the second pic. It actually looks like it is well made with a 12HP electric start Briggs.

2 points@PWL216 without question a terrible day , my father worked for 31 years , in NYFD , 17 truck rescue , 129 st , st anns ave , spanish harlem , he was gone before the towers went up, but I can say if he were living , he would have been at the station , helping in any way he could , the brotherhood is bound by daily recovery to others . his last fire , was getting blown out of a restaurant , when the gas supply exploded , was constantly supported and encouraged to keep going . his helmet had the classic rear heat curl in it . never forget you , Dad , pete

2 pointsThat blower fan must run rather fast. Some time back a few people relater the story of their fans blowing apart from spinning too fast. Mine has the same pulley that was used when it was used in the Heat/AC duct and works fine. I need to paint mine so it will look pretty like yours.

2 pointsK & B may have one, send a PM to @76c12091520h, also Lincoln at A-Z could have a good used one, give Lincoln a call https://www.a-ztractor.com/

2 pointsI will add only one thing: if you jam the brakes and swerve at 60mph, it is not possible to have too many tie downs. As many have already said, a tumbling tractor in the rear view is a really bad day.

2 pointsWorked on it some more with some metal pollish. Looking better. I also put a little edge on it. Calling it done. I sure wouldn't want to be on the business end of this thing.
