12 pointsThis is just a continuation of what I started here. I just felt like cleaning up the title a little. B-80 to C-160 to B-80 - Wheel Horse Tractors - RedSquare Wheel Horse Forum It's been slow going on this project with so many higher priority (per the boss) things popping up. I'm very close though. The @PullstartK181 is fully installed, wired up and ready to go. I decided to switch to a different carb so I've got the replacement apart and cleaned. Waiting on a kit for it. I'm also still waiting on the shroud lettering from @Vinylguy. I running this on an electric fuel pump and I had one of the cheapies on the shelf. I mounted it out of the way Every K181 I've had has had a very short throttle throw. This is my fix for that. I'm not doing a cosmetic restore but I did repaint the dash letters just cuz. Odd. That was a whole lot easier years ago. As with any project like this there's a few bugs to work out. I found one this morning. There was no spark. Turns out the secondary coil winding were about 45k ohms. Way too high. Pulled one off the shelf and I'm good to go on that.

5 pointsNew-ish fuel tank. I finally managed to run it out of fuel yesterday at a time and in a situation where I didn't have to put more in to finish what I was doing, so I pushed it back to the garage and put in the clean tank I got at the show.

4 pointsNot today, but I finally remembered to take pictures, and we all know if you don't have pictures it didn't happen. Following my stroke I have been using a walker and don't have good balance, so lowering and raising the heavy ramp on my trailer was going to present a problem. I bought a pair of garage door springs, ten feet of PVC and a couple of pulleys and solved that problem for about $ 60.00. Works so well I don't know why I didn't do it years ago.

4 pointsalways great to see the kids interested in the tractors --- bought the 312 in 1989 -- my son was on it immediately - - as well as helping underneath to install the plow -- my grandson began mowing with my 312 when he was about 6 --- it's 35 yrs later and my 17 yr old grandson has a 520hc and C165 -- and has done numerous rehabs with me -

3 pointsI’m posting this here hoping there is someone interested in this tractor. This was my grandfather’s and father’s tractor, but has been sitting in the garage unused for probably 10 years. I believe it has always been stored in a garage. I’m not sure what if any issues it might have. Definitely does not start, but could just need a battery and new spark plugs. There is a mower deck, snowblower, and tiller attachment that goes with this, as well as a cab. It is located just outside of Albany, NY and will need to be picked up here. I can scrap this, but I’m hoping to find someone that can and wants to do something more with the tractor. Let me know if you want me to post any additional pictures or if you have any other questions.

3 pointsFinally took some time to work on the new workshop end today. On the left side I added some pine on the face of the PT beam to build it out even with the rest. Then I put up the boards seen here across the outside edges and top. The doorway opening is about 74 1/2" wide by 80 or 90" tall. I'll do a pair of outward opening french doors.

3 pointsI had a TP tools tank blaster years ago. Worked ok. As with all sandblasting. Dry media and dry air (and a lot of it) is the key. Also plenty of nozzles. they wear out fast and lose velocity. I used carbide nozzles.

3 pointsWe started on Lawrence rd in Pownal. Walked about a mile and a half around Tryon Mt. Explored a feldspar mine that we didn't know about. VERY interesting place. Video below and some pics mixed in. We walked over to Bradbury mountain State Park along the border trail and others. Then back to the parking lot. Total mileage just under 6. Elevation gain almost 900 feet. The humidity was high and doing its best to snot beat me. Nearly succeeded bit eventually I won. I wanted to make sure I called out this Pic first. Note the ring around this tree about 3 feet up. There was a cable tied to/around it in the distant past that was part of the mining operation. It was pointed directly at the tall post/crane/derrick in the video. More mine pics. This is a Pound for loose large animals from a couple hundred years ago. Super cool van in the State Park lot. And the rest.....

3 pointsYesterday I spent the day at the Dacusville SC Farm Show, Wheel Horse was the featured tractor and Jacky @turnnleft and his family had an outstanding display. As I drove around the grounds I snapped a few more photos to share with you. Camping has changed a bit since the 1920s Lots of horses other than Whee4l Horses

3 pointsI loaded one of the 953s onto my trailer, drove a couple hours to Dacusville, SC for a nice little show, drove it all day, took a bunch of pictures I've posted and enjoyed the day. First time in over a year that I have been able to do that.

3 pointsI loosened the trans from the frame and we were able to jack it up enough to get the post in place. After pulling the plug and letting the engine rotate the transmission pulley with the starter for a bit, we pulled enough fluid down the fill tube to fire it up!
-
2 pointsAll: Yesterday, I got a call from my son asking if he could stop by to change the oil in his & the girlfriends cars, after he took her 3 boys to get haircuts. I had finished cutting the grass with the 854 & parked it to wash out the underside of the deck. All 3 boys showed interest in it, so...... Why not fire up the C81 too?? Good times.

2 pointsMy holiday week end project. About a month er so ago I took my Saturn SL2 in for tires and was informed that there was an issue that had to be addressed before they would put new tires on. I was asked to come into the shop & check things out. I walked under the lift to see this treasure. The rest of the underbody of the car was in great shape so I set out to find a new/used K-frame for my work buggy. This turned out to be a bit difficult in Wisconsin. A salvage yard answered my search with what they said was a "good" frame. I stopped in to see what they had & well it wasn't good but it was better than what I had to work with. The hard to reproduce U shape of the frame was good but the bottom not so much. Price was agreed on & I took it home. My "new" K-frame, and my holiday weekend project. You can see that there is some rust issues. You can also see in the pic above that I have already made 2 cuts in the bottom of this "new" frame. This is the section that I planed to cut out & replace. The factory used 16ga metal to construct this whole frame. I opted to used 14ga metal for my replacement part. Removed the bad section, cut the new piece, & welded it in place. A little paint to make it look good as new. With that much out of the way it was time to remove the old K-frame & discover just how badly rusted it was. Scary to think that I was driving this car. Glad it didn't fall apart while goin down the road. Took around 8hrs. to do the frame swap. Should be safe to drive for another 100k miles. Hope you all had a good Labor Day weekend. I know I had enough labor for one weekend.

2 pointsI buy a few items at our local weekly auction. This week I will be selling a load of seldom used items. Oh, the truck is also full.

2 pointsPractically all of the hydro linkages are different, as @pfrederi noted. So are some elements of the seat and fender mounting. I’d stay away from attempting to swap in the Sunstrand. A damaged Eaton 700 is pretty much a doorstop--if you see metal filings in the reservoir oil it’s a goner. @oliver2-44’s suggestion is much better. Do a full transaxle swap from an Eaton 1100 machine. The 1100 is a stout unit and uses a single reservoir for the pump motor and transaxle for oil. The only “hacks” that you’ll need are: 1. to plumb the charge pump output of the 1100 directly into the filter input since your 518-H chassis has no hydro lift control valve or cylinder (it uses what we refer to as the “arm strong” lift system). 2. a small rework of the last part of the motion control linkage since the actuator arm on the 1100 is situated differently than the arm on the 700. As an alternate, you may choose to swap your engine and topsides onto the chassis of the 1100 “donor” tractor--that is what I did since it seemed like less work AND I got hydraulic lift into the bargain. I now have a 518-H++ we call Clyde.
-
2 pointsI put our grass collection system on the 416h and while mowing, the blades kept slowing down for some strange, odd, unknown reason. I contemplated stopping and investigating the cause, but the grass wasn't too high and was mostly weeds so it was very slow, but bearable as my lawn is about 1/2 acre. I mean, I KNOW I didn't over grease the pto FOR SURE this time. I'm positive 😌. I've cleaned and regreased many times! Right? ....hmm. well, on 2nd thought, I HAVE been wrong once or twice before... 🥸

2 pointsAlmost every Kohler I end up setting the timing on I pull the flywheel, clean the "S" mark and then paint the line with bright white paint.
-
2 pointsMy daughter has her own garden tractor, even if it is not a Wheel Horse. Now I need to get one for my grandson. I am hoping to get him interested when he is old enough. I got him an antique Briggs engine so far, and a friend has a garden tractor for him, I just need to go pick it up.
-
2 pointsI prefer a test light rather than a meter for static timing. Your eye will react to a light coming on or off faster than a meter movement. With the sparkplug removed so the engine can't start, disconnect the wire from the coil to points and the condenser wire, connect the test light lead to the wire from the points and touch the test light probe to the battery "+" terminal, the light should come on if the points are closed. As you rotate the flywheel in the clockwise direction the light will turn off as soon as the points begin to open. This is much easier to notice than looking at a meter dial.

2 pointsSteve, I drove by the arch hundreds of times, and never went up it. It's like Bonne Terre Mines, which is only about 7 miles from me. Never been down, but as close as it is to me, I tell myself one day I will. https://bonneterremine.com/

-
2 pointsThanks for posting that, Terry. I just drove by there a half hour ago. I live only 15 miles from there on the Illinois side so get to see the arch frequently. I haven’t been up in a few years but it is a must-do if you’re in the area. The Gateway Arch is a truly unique and iconic monument and St. Louis is a great city to visit. Shown in the video, but perhaps not obvious, is that the floor of the observation deck is curved to hug the contour of the catenary. Makes it somewhat exciting to walk up and down if you’re already a little uncomfortable due to the height 😎 The tram system is a curiosity of its own and as unique as the Arch itself. The capsules are small and as you ascend they periodically make adjustments to stay level. Looking out the little window affords an occasional glimpse of the stairwell also inside. It’s been incredibly reliable over the last 60 years but just within the last few weeks visitors had to come back down the stairs when there was a temporary shutdown. First time I can remember hearing of that and it must have been quite the experience for those passengers! The designer of the tram system wasn’t a classically trained engineer. His background was in elevator designs for parking garages and he was able to use his creativity and perspectives gained there to come up with an incredible system. This is worth a read: Dick Bowser Come visit St Louis! Steve

2 pointsIf you could find a parts tractor with an Eaton 1100 that would be a great upgrade. The C1x5 and some of the 300,400 and 500 h tractors used the Eaton

2 pointsIt only matters when that lobe is in contact with it. That's when the points open and what opens it. Those contact surfaces need to be clean in order to make contact. Even new points too as they are coated so they don't oxidize in the package.

2 pointsThe motion control linkage for a Sunstrand Hydro gear and an Eaton 100 are NOT the same

2 pointsAlthough some people (cough, cough) don't want me to activate the Horse Whinnie horn I inherited from roadapples at the WH show, I like to turn it on when young children come up to the tractors. I had a great time at our local steam show with the kids and the horn. The best are the ones that are real quizzical at they get near one. They tentatively touch a tractor and I make the horn sound. There eyes light up like it's Christmas morning.

2 pointsWorked on making some personalized Key Chains for a friend. I think they turned out well! 3D printed in 3 colors. The one I made for mine is not personalized. Always fun to be making something unique and useful. It is a small thing to do on a WH, but an easy way to finding the key on the key rack! Steve
