4 pointsI’m posting this here hoping there is someone interested in this tractor. This was my grandfather’s and father’s tractor, but has been sitting in the garage unused for probably 10 years. I believe it has always been stored in a garage. I’m not sure what if any issues it might have. Definitely does not start, but could just need a battery and new spark plugs. There is a mower deck, snowblower, and tiller attachment that goes with this, as well as a cab. It is located just outside of Albany, NY and will need to be picked up here. I can scrap this, but I’m hoping to find someone that can and wants to do something more with the tractor. Let me know if you want me to post any additional pictures or if you have any other questions.

4 pointsSo I picked this up Tuesday. My plan was to use it at my mother's house this fall as she has a real problem with leaves. Craftsman tow behind lawn and leaf vacuum. PO said it was his father's, who passed away. Sat in shed unused for a few years. One tire flat, wont start. He has had it for sale for some time at 600. I noticed he had changed the ad to read make him an offer. I texted him and was made an offer I couldn't refuse. 125.00 Picked it up. Clean as can be. No rust, not even a scratch on it. Got it to my mother's and within 15 mins it was purring like a kitten. Problem was that the chute would not mesh with the deck on that FREE craftsman rider I had got for her few months back. My nieces and her husband showed up to my mom's and her husband had interest in the vac. Told me he give me 4 tires for my truck for it. Sooooo, next week I will be getting a set of tires for my truck ! I'm happy, he is happy, my mom not so happy . Can't please everyone!

4 pointsNot really a coaster, though it could be used for that purpose. This item is going to be used to cover a hole at the center of the flywheel screen. It is a work in progress and this is the first iteration so please ignore the hole on the edge of the hub. This was made using Libracad, a 2D CAD program which allowed me to load it into Estlcam, a simplie CAM program. Estlcam created the G-code file that the CNC router used to create the part.

3 pointsIn between rain drops and doing 748 other things Trina got a coat of Rust-Oleum 2X Nutmeg color on a lawn ornament deer she's fixing up for my momma. She also started the destruction process on the old forest access bridge this morning. After a break I went out with her and we got it all shredded. Next June or July there'll be NO indication of any human activity here.

2 pointsSo, with the new electric pump making life easy on the 516H, I installed the new mag on the '99 Intek on my Snapper RER which had just died softly while cutting last week. My 62 year old brain told me it had to be the mag as the spark appeared weak. Made sense. Got the OEM part and . . . nothing. It couldn't have been under the valve cover because I just adjusted the valves. Finally moved it into the garage now that I have a week off and, yup, there was the intake rocker hanging on with adjuster on the cover. The adjuster lost its tiny little adjustment screw. Nothing - not by magnet, not in drained oil. Pulled the cover off and, nothing. The cam is worn to the point where ACR is a now and then thing. I'll buy new OEM because the Chinesium is a guaranteed fail. Even the B&S part is not of the quality of the solid piece I'll be tossing. Maybe swap the ACR pieces? And so, I wonder if they'll take back the mag . . . she'll run later next week. Sigh.

2 pointsI broke the throttle cable the other day and had to shorten it a couple inches to repair. Since then, the low end idle has been lower/slower. So far, it has not back fired! Seems the idle was too high at shut down?

2 pointsWell bud sounds like you have it all covered. Enjoy the your weekend and holiday.

2 pointsThis is not how I was taught to calculate torque values Don. I was always taught, at least for SAE bolts, that the fraction was the drive size of the impact, and then you take the smallest common fraction (1/4 1/3, 1/2 etc) that produces a whole number on the integer, and that's you ugga-dugga factor. So your 3/8-16 bolt takes a 3/8 drive impact at 4 ugga duggas.

2 pointsThank you! No real need for that. We only use it occasionally, getting down cristmas decorations and stuff like that, and only with socks or bare feet. On top of that the walls are "Agnes" panels which have a plastic (?) coating on them. Plus anything I put on the wall would not look very tasty.. Handholds are for the weak! Which I am not (yet) In all seriousness, I used to go up there without a ladder and just doing a kind of back summersault while holding onto the beam. I think this will be fine for now

1 pointToday I made the drive to take a look at it myself ,with trailer in tow. It’s a little rougher than I thought but it had been sitting in a corn field for a few yrs. C-101 8 speed .1979 if I’m reading the ID tag right. The deck is in great shape.Someone made a couple scalp wheels out of logs 🪵

1 pointIt will be a while before I can get back to this job. Owner is away this week. I am away the next three weeks. Guess it will be October before new designs be machined.

1 pointThe thing it took me a while to “grok” is that the carb, piston, valves, and muffler are totally unaware that we’ve shut off the spark (except on the newer engines that have the solenoid fuel cutoff at the carb). Air is still being pulled in, mixed with fuel, compressed, and exhausted. If the muffler is hot enough to ignite that exhausted fuel/air mixture, it’ll backfire. For engines I use only sporadically, I close the fuel petcock and let the engine run until fuel starvation shuts it down. Lessens the chance of mess in the carb from fuel evaporation and for sure no backfires!

1 pointJust happened to check Craigslist yesterday 7 minutes after a gentleman posted a 418-8 for sale, $400. Picked it up this morning and mowed with it. It has a 42” recycler deck and electric lift. Has an adjustable seat that’s stuck so my short legs barely reach the pedals As I was leaving he said he had a couple more things for it. Turned out to be a set of 50lb steel wheel weights. I’ll be cleaning it up and changing the fluids later today. Need to clean the deck too. I can tell by the way it cuts that’s it’s all clumped up underneath. Loving it so far, other than a big pop when it starts…

1 pointThe thread size is 5/16-18. On a number of the intake and exhaust screws it is possible to tap them deeper, use a bottom tap and go as far as you can and then get longer bolts, cut to fit is a good idea to get maximum engagement. I do this any time I have those bolts out to prevent what you have experienced. A drop of oil on the threads and torque to no more than specified.

1 pointDefinitely misleading. If the nyloc has not moved on the bolt, then any “preload” loss is due to loss of metal or bending somewhere--off any or all of the fixture bushings, the bottom of the nut, the underside of the bolt head, or (far less likely) on the bolt or nut threads where they are meshed within the nut. Also, to me 6 lbs of torque is only 20% of the 31 lb. spec for a standard grade ⅜-16 bolt, especially one intending to capture a piece with no movement as in the use case for this test. All this proves to me is that an improper assembly can fail--surprise surprise. If I’d submitted a lab report for a test like this in college, I’d have received no higher than a D grade.

1 pointHi Kevin, I believe you have to at least lift the motor a bit to get the lower shaft out. I’d replace the steering block while you’re at it. Brian from K+B Wheel Horse Parts should have it. The hardest part may be removing the steering wheel from the shaft. Recently I had to use two Port a Powers and a two foot long piece of 3/4” round stock that I hit with a sledgehammer.

1 pointOur good friend that does truck fabrication for a living was telling us all about the amazing qualities of anaerobic sealer and how they've pretty much switched over to using that almost exclusively. I bought some so they could use it on my truck when we rebuild the rear axle. I got thinking that might be good in the application here for trying to seal up the valve cover. I didn't realize that it can't be laid down on top of paint so I scraped the painted surface under the gasket for the breather off with a razor and then some sandpaper and then cleaned it with brake clean on a rag. Put the new base gasket in. All installed and setting to dry.

1 pointBeen moving a few decks around the garage. I’m out of room, so I ordered some more pallet racking to make a little more. That’s the hope anyway.

1 pointWorked on making some personalized Key Chains for a friend. I think they turned out well! 3D printed in 3 colors. The one I made for mine is not personalized. Always fun to be making something unique and useful. It is a small thing to do on a WH, but an easy way to finding the key on the key rack! Steve

1 pointSo we are talkiing about a gear driven deck, right??? The ones where the blades need to be timed to prevent colliding?? Did you ( or whoever) hit any objects while mowing?? A harsh hit can bend a blade and / or damage a hardened spindle shaft. And actually bend the overhung end of the cross shaft that mounts the drive gears. I had to replace that shaft on a nice 32" deck - the end of the shaft was bent .020. Timing - the side gear key had also sheared, allowing the gear to revolve on the shaft and go out of time..... Worn gears that have excessive lash can also make for some odd noises....... Oh, one more - check the large cast housing under the deck that mounts the bearings - then tend to crack and break into two near the middle... when that happens only the deck shell is holding it all together...

1 pointNot sure if is the same person, but I got my solid mounts from Zach Kerber. https://performancemad.com/product/wheel-horse-solid-engine-mounts-pt-num-1099-551/ Nicely made parts.
