18 pointsI hope, I hope, I really hope, this tractor and I stay out of the bumps and bruises thread. @pfrederi offered it up for sale for $150 and I quick nabbed it! One of the rules to tractor buying is never tell how much. Well, I don’t believe this will ever go far from my possession , so I don’t mind sharing that info. The electric over hydraulic pump on the front and gravity drop have quickly grown on me. I bet I’ve got 3 or 4 hours on this thing since unloading already! It’s a beast! When we were talking about the model number, 753, seven fifty me quickly rolled off my tongue. It’s dangerous and wild. I found a cast “HOOSIER” seat for $25 from @wallfish’s pa Paul, and moved the pump forward enough to toss my spare hood on. The hood screw tabs on the gas tank are both ripped out, so I got creative with the rear hood hold downs, just some crushed 1/2” copper elbows drilled and bent a bit for zip tie action.

11 pointsI picked up a front sickle mower for $30, thanks to @cafoose for that assist! That could give me about an 80” cut if I were to make the, work together. I really like the cement weight hanging up front too, just a little more creativity! As Paul tried to convince me, there isn’t a ton of room to adapt my HY3 kit. The electric pump will stay. I spent some time giving it a grease job, checking oil, etc. the 8 speed trans makes a funky noise in 2 hi, but @roadapples brother Guy gifted me another 8 speed. I’ll keep it aside just in case that noise proves to be detrimental.

10 pointsIve had my 425 for a couple years, 445 about a year, and last month i came across a 455 Diesel AWS that had sat neglected about 6 years. It was rough, low compression on all 3 holes, water in the tank, lines, lift pump, injection pump, injectors. I pulled the head off; cleaned up the valves, soaked the rings, new gasket. New injectors, new injection lines, lift pump..and it fired right up. Rebuilt the 60" deck, just needs a hood now, and a new gauge cluster. 8 pointsAnd @wallfish. Where do I begin? He’s so cool, to offer such a prized possession! He reached out to me, offering a @Pullstart 12 hp Kohler to me, when Chuck Foose nabbed Richie’s before I saw it in the classifieds. Offering, that is, for free! Communicating back and forth with John, I put together my old C-101 roller, painted some parts and left others the way they are, built a muffler, cleaned up a carb, and we put together a sort of bucket list machine! I have always had a thing for the B-60 Pullstart “B/C” series machines. Well, we built a B-120 now! Argh! It’s a brute! I have some work to do to make the recoil work well, but it starts and runs so excellent! I need to clean the tank out again, or keep replacing fuel filters, but it is a keeper forever! @Tractorhead, ‘Fish and I worked a bit on Thursday to get it going and it was my cruise machine for the weekend! Notice the “keyway” used to attach the drive pulley. Apparently some knuckle head forgot to pack one, and he was too stubborn to walk around and buy one, so he made one. Kind of. It’s an eyebolt lag screw, hammered square, and lightly zip tied on. I need to make the change there, to a normal keyway, so I can assemble the PTO properly.

7 pointsSocio-economic impact of tractorization During the last Quarter of the nineteenth century the first heavy steam traction engines and larger farm implements necessitated the building of better roads and more substantial bridges to cross creeks and rivers. All rural residents benefited from these improvements. Numerous small manufacturers built and maintained machinery to make the operation of the steam tractors successful. As gasoline and kerosene internal combustion powered tractors took the place of steam machines and horse less labor was required on the farm and people were able to enter the industrial sector. Increased crop yields resulted in improved transportation to and from major markets and shipping points. This led to greater choices for consumers and better prices for the commodities farmers produced. Farms have grown larger and one farmer can manage to cultivate the land that several families would have worked in 1900. Land formerly devoted to raising and feeding horses has been converted to cash crop production or reverted to grassland or forest. This is a bit of a double-edged sword because many rural families left the land in favor of city life and some rural communities have become only a memory. No-till farming practices and improvements in machinery technology have further reduced the backbreaking labor required for crop production and improved soil quality while increasing crop yields. The tractor has had a positive impact on economic growth in the United States. Horses and mules, while providing farm power, ate up more than twenty percent of the food they helped farmers grow! By replacing them with machines that consumed much less expensive fuel and didn’t need to be fed when not working farmers were able to reduce their costs. More importantly, the millions of farm workers freed up by the technology were able to contribute their labor elsewhere in the economy, creating large economic benefits. According to a recent estimate the U.S. would have been almost ten percent poorer in 1955 if it weren’t for the farm tractor. Coupled with the increase in yields generated by the advances in biological and chemical research, the farm tractor has helped agriculture significantly. While the positive economic impact of tractorization is undeniable, the loss of connection to the land and small town values has been a negative outcome in my opinion. Generations of agricultural families have experienced the sadness of giving up the farm and the rural way of life. Neighbors working with one another to harvest crops and achieve common goals seems to be the exception rather than the rule in urban settings.

Super happy to have the opportunity to be it's new caretaker and honor the memory of our previous oldest RedSquare member. RIP Russ AKA Saltywright

It was good to meet you and see your passion for Wheel Horse in action while you worked with Pullstart on several of his projects! I did get a couple pictures while you were working on Kevin’s 12 hp Kohler motor install!

5 pointsThe generosity of Wheel Horse people, both friend and stranger, is like none other! There was a free pile, I found some cool belts that I could use, a carburetor and a recoil housing, Lane gave me a starter/generator bracket, and Mr. Richard gave me a handful of tools from his collection. One of the belts I scavenged from the free pile was purely because the part number search yielded it was for a 540 rpm front PTO kit. Lane introduced me to Eric Van Luke (I believe) and he mentioned having two different 540 kits. I was excited to gift him the belt, and to find out he was missing that piece to one kit!

5 pointsHere’s my tractors and parts haul for the year. I feel like I did ok. Hindsight, I’m glad that I offed the Lawn Ranger, we were pretty well packed in on the way home! I picked up this Raider 12 for my brother in law. I have a couple various tillers and his soil is quite sandy, so the one I have with somewhat worn out tines will do just fine. He paid $200 to have his neighbor come work up his food plots this year, so I figured I’d send him a tiller tractor to do it himself and save some coin. The best part about it, is part of the @roadapples collection is in my family, and will have a purpose. I bought two sets of wheel weights, one from @rjg854 and one from @squonk. The hundred pounders will be added to a plow tractor for sure! The two smaller ones might be stacked left side on “Seven Fifty Me” for some offset weight of the sickle bar. I grabbed two 8” plows, one complete and one moldboard only. They will be for house spares for plow days. There’s a cheap unknown brand front sickle bar mower…. It needs some repairs and maintenance, but it operates freely! I have another set of sickle bars, one Wheel Horse with a frozen wobble box and one Allis Chalmers style. my new favorite mower, 753 sickle machine. I’ve added the hood and seat now. A cool round hood pull behind tiller, equipped with a fine example of a mouse house! It pulls over well but has no spark. I’ll either get it running, or replace it with a vertical shaft something else. I just want to use it. I traded Richie a GT14 grille he needed for a 3 point GT14 lift bar. Back in 2020, @ronwh sent me a 3 point kit with no lift bar. I built a lift bar for some friend’s kids and that machine has now come back to me. I’m looking forward to what’s next. Guy Meyer sent me home with an 8 speed transmission from Mr. Jay’s collection, and I have a couple recoil parts here that I need to tune up.

5 pointsThere were plenty of young kids active at the show this year. One little man was busy buying up all the wheels in sight! Don had a set for sale for $20 and the little man offered him a 5 dollar bill from his wallet. After some hard negotiations, Don offered them for free and helped to load them up. Once the freebies were loaded, that dude offered the $5 to Don again for a second set! Score!

Our usual Wednesday night Italian Village dinner plans got interrupted by a bunch of other people filling our normal table, so we split and scrambled. Brian and Jo, Don, Bryon, Stephan and I enjoyed a little time to chit chat and pig out at Hickory Ridge. My family and I ate there one year after the show, I knew they would not disappoint. After supper, festivities at the hotel under Steve’s awning! I was pleasantly surprised, that Stephan brought me a Bavarian flag!

4 pointsBe sure to clean the tine holes in the long (and possible short) needle. I use a stiff wire of a wire brush held in a small vice grip. Once clean I like to blow through the bottom holes and feel air coming out the upper holes.

I had a starter type that I bought from JoeM a couple years back, and we decided we’d stick them next to each other for sale for his asking price, and see what one sells and what one I keep I ended up selling mine to Racin’Bob the day before I left, so that settled that!

4 pointsThursday morning’s standard procedure to hurry up and wait… The club’s insurance policy doesn’t kick in until 9am, so there is never a need to think we’ll get in before that. It’s still a perfect time to start mingling, finding deals before they are unloaded, etc.

4 pointsI have game cameras in different locations oround our property for various reasons. One is to see what animals are hanging out and also for fun. The grandchildren love them and ask to see the pictures nearly every time they visit. The cameras also get some decent pictures of me working the Wheel Horses at times. Thought I would share a couple. I recently had a church friend give me a Troybilt 54" ZRT that had issues and I have got it running and cutting well so I will be using it as my go to mower. The Wheel Horse is a great worker so a little rest is due.

3 pointsThat now looks like the plan Kevin. I've got the Walbro apart and the kit is wrong. The needle valve is a no go. The bowl gasket is different but might work. I can redo the old one. To my surprise the bowl was clean and I didn't see any signs of bad fuel. It just hit me as I'm sitting here eating some lunch. Years ago I ended up with a Walbro kit and never used it. The first box I opened and there it was. I may not use it though. The innards look just fine. I'll just do the Berrymans thing.

3 pointsBob, I’ve gone through a good handful of carbs. As long as they are tight, I’ve gotten along just fine by disassembling, setting it all in my gallon of Berryman carb dip for a day or so, and thoroughly cleaning all the passages and surfaces before assembly.

I purchased this Lawn Ranger from Don for a song and dance practically and Jeremy reminded me how he’d been looking for one for his grand daughter. He really sent a big package deal home with Rylee last year, so I passed the LR on to him! After we set up, I hitched a ride from Karen, who was hitching a ride from Jim. Stephan met kind folks along his journey, and he received birthday gifts along the way as well! Ed Dog made a good handful of these cut out horse heads. Once again, Bob Hunter knocked another paint job outta the park!

2 pointsI have found that an easy way to change the fuel line is to connect the old one to the new one with a double barbed fitting. Then you can pull the new one right through without having to take too much apart.

2 pointsIf that's a metal needle and seat just check it for obvious wear and tear. If it's a rubber needle or seat just make sure it's still nice and soft and pliable. I don't normally reuse them because I have the carb kit right on hand but I would say that the vast majority really don't need to be replaced when I have them apart. I've used a couple different brands of Soaker kits and they did okay but I've been using gasoline which I think works better. This last one that I cleaned up over the weekend, I used lacquer thinner as a suggestion from this website. I believe that works even better than the gasoline. Right before I put it back together I take one whole can of your favorite brake clean and spray it all over inside outside backwards forwards up down left right reverse try all that again. Then put it back together.

2 pointsI am already enjoying this tractor, and have done some side trail maintenance by running it at a 45 and trimming the overgrowth on my back driveway, including small shrubs and trees up to 1” diameter. They fall like they were zapped with a laser beam! I did find out that it becomes quite unbalanced when the weight is hanging like that, and feel like a little more left side weight would be smart. Luckily I operate this at a very slow and manageable speed and am kind of always on the defense, so it tipped a bit and I was ready to counter the movement. I think I need a sticker, “WARNING! Safety Flip Flops Required!”

2 pointsOne note - you will not be able to use the original 701 starter solenoid. The factory solenoid uses a negative signal to power the magnetic switch. You will need to replace it with a newer solenoid that uses positive power to power up the magnetic switch.
