8 pointsSince this is a snow thread I'll jump in with a story from my childhood. Growing up in north eastern Iowa we saw huge snow storms as a kid. Hard getting the door open on the house some mornings. My mom told the story of once there was a severe blizzard predicted. My dad and mom took my 2 younger sisters to Waukon about 10 miles from the farm to leave them with grandparents. My older brother and I stayed back at the farm. On the way home the storm got so bad my dad had to stop halfway home and leave my mom and the car at a friends place. The road was impassable. He walked the 5 miles to home. Meanwhile my mom called all the folks on his path to turn on yard lights so my dad could orient himself in the blinding snow. Half way home he bumped into a car stalled in the snow with an elderly couple trapped inside. He then walked to the next farm where they sent out a tractor to pull the folks to safety. He continued on his walk through the blizzard and made it to our farm. He probably saved those folks lives that day. His favorite hero was John Wayne. I thought my Dad was John Wayne....

7 pointsSo I have this small “ chopping” block that I use on top of bench to do adze or hatchet work even to many times just make some kindling so I don’t damage bench. Decided to adapt it to my small anvil station which also puts it at a better height and consolidates it to one area. It works really well being also having a very solid feel.

7 pointsThe Corn Binder When early farmers harvested corn they would either pick the ears for shelling or shock the stalks and remove ears at a later time. By the 1890's most farmers had a corn binder which allowed them to harvest corn without having to cut the stalks by hand. The corn binder put the corn into sheaves and farmers would then put them into shocks. Much like the grain binder the corn binder cut the stalks, bundled them and placed the bundles on the ground to be picked up. Once the bundles of corn stalks were in the thrashing room the ears were removed from the stalks and the corn stalks were chopped and added to silage for feeding cattle. The ears of corn would then be stored in a corn crib.

6 pointsThese are 6.00 X12 FirestoneTown and Country snow tires for cars. They are taller than 6-12 garden tractor tires.

6 pointsI did the PAR36 led upgrade on my 416 and 312, one had the flood pattern, one a spot pattern..both incredibly bright. Did a dual led tail too.
-
5 pointsOne con of leds is since they are so white in the 5-6 k color they glare on snow.

5 pointsWoke up to -7° this morning and there not much relief until late in the week. Look at the bright side guys..........................no skeeters.
-
5 pointsYup when you smarty pants guys would come in to buy something I would punch in the part #. Then at the price I would punch in L+10. LIST PLUS 10%!
-
5 pointsAs I said before (several times), I'm a big fan of LED upgrades. This is especially true of tractors with single cylinder charging systems. Onan powered machines have high enough electrical output to make incandescent (halogen) bulbs competitive, but with a power penalty if not on an Onan. I still say LEDs are better. If nothing else, they last forever by comparison. Just make sure you run a ground strap from your hood to the frame to prevent flickering.

4 pointsThe 25” tires over the 23" would up your speed in each gear by ~8% . Hoo Hah!

4 pointsPerhaps all of the politicians could go out to the gas lines and talk about what needs to be done and all that hot air will keep the lines from freezing!

4 pointsWe got a blizzard up here in northern NY, so I got my no name out to test her out. Did very good in the deep snow, I was very impressed.

4 pointsRear fenders back from my painter's One is for the 520-8 I am building and the other is for a 520H that I was working on last year that has not got finished yet. I will let these dry likely until spring as the tractors are moved to a garage out back and snowed in. He still has the hoods. The red paint is finished but he still needs to paint the black grill.

4 pointsI grew up about fifty miles north of @Handy Don and remember some winters when the snow would drift half way up the windows of the house. Here is a picture of the road in front of the house, I can't remember the year but it was a big one.

4 pointsIt’s been here all day, you boys up north can come get your weather anytime you want it

3 pointsHere in south Missouri, we've just got a dusting of snow. My brother in law in north Missouri has several inches. Earlier this week he called and while we were talking he said his wife was sweeping snow off deck. "Now she's got a shovel and cleaning sidewalk towards driveway." He has a long drive way and I said to Larry, "Yell out the door and tell your wife when she get to the mail box at the end of the driveway to be sure to bring the mail back in!" We thought it was funny--apparently Kathy didn't. Well today he sent a picture of their snow with then caption: "Guess what I have to do when the wind stops blowing?" I replied " Spray Kathy's shovel with non-stick cooking oil so snow won't stick? I don't have a reply yet. Years ago we got some big snows. Walking over fences with just the top strand of barbed wire showing and making snow caves. My kids have never that that kind of fun. Mom says we three boys would come in with our boots full of icy water, toes red from the cold. Of course we didn't have cell phones, game boys and weren't on traveling sports teams. As we got old enough to be responsible, we did have rifles, shotguns, fishing poles, bicycles and three Harley Davidson 50cc motor bikes--One for parts and two to ride around the farm.

3 pointsSnow was too wet and heavy for the little Wheel Horse to handle so out came the bigger tractor and 72" blower. No trouble for that tractor.

3 pointsMy 79350 48" plow I bought for the C81 came with two bolt on height adjustable bent metal skid pads. It is my understanding some long frame plows of the mid 1990's did not, but the keyholes were there in the plow blade. I welded a 3/8" pad to the underside of each.....

3 pointsI understand the reasons behind the subscription model. It's just that it unfairly handicaps a small business like I have owned. I paid for a new version of Act and Quick books every few years and that served my purpose and amortized my expense in a way that made sense. Never pirated any software and never gave mine to anyone. Now I am locked out of my software if I don't subscribe. One of the reasons I have shut down my charter business this year. Corporate America has made it too hard to stay in business....they all want more $$ for less service. So fine, they won't get any from me. Just like the Chiefs / Miami game yesterday. You HAVE to subscribe to Peacock to see the game. Oh yah? Got no interest in doing that. Rant over...

3 points@RKCrizzle and all others responding to the light upgrade , great time to ENHANCE / IMPROVE total tractor grounding , like electrical , BOLT ON LUGS , clean off mount area , of any rust / paint , etc. like a solid bolt to frame or battery ground point , don't count on engine cooling tins , or any issue point . have this on my 3 horses , lights are very bright / crisp , pete

3 pointsMother Nature is going to win this battle. Is it a red oak or a white oak? We had a white oak dropped into the forest a few years ago and within two years the stump was nearly decomposed. A red oak nearby was cut twelve years ago and is standing strong, don't know why.

3 pointsSome WH tractors came with a duel stator. One dedicated to lights the other for charging. I am not sure which ones but figure some magneto engines came this way. One issue with using the AC side, no lights if the engine is not running.
-
3 pointsI did the same on my 753. I mounted LED lights on the headlight bracket and ran the wires direct to the battery with a toggle switch.

3 pointsWas thinking of snow today - here's my barn find restored to worker 416-8 with the tall chute acquired from a member here 1st winter - new bearings - chain - little welding and straightening on the auger . K341 will toss some snow . 161812588_444158220221879_7691297334427239989_n.mp4

2 pointsAll the manufacturers are having issues with premature frame rot. I bought a 99 Taco at a Repo auction around 2007. Truck was beautiful. They announced frame damage. I didn't see any. Paid 9 grand for it. Put tires and a timing belt on it. Started driving it and the guys at work say, "didn't you hear about the frame recalls? I hadn't heard of it. I decide to rustproof the frame and when I put my hand near the rear shackle to pull myself under on the creeper my hand starts to go thru a soft spot on the frame. took it to the Tojo dealer and filled out the paperwork. 2 month's later I had a check for 15 grand. Bought another truck for 12 grand and put a new roof on the garage with the rest.

2 pointsMy mechanical engineer son made a snow gun when he was ten. $10 in gas pipe, connectors, valves. Hook one side to a hose one side to a compressor and you got snow... actually works. Still have it in the garage. Somewhere...

2 pointsHere in the ‘burbs north of NYC, in plenty of years we’d get a dump of up to a foot or more and so I got to demonstrate snow caving! We also have a terrific hill for sledding right in our side yard--my granddaughter calls it “terrifyingly exciting". The last two years have been more rain than snow, though.
-
2 pointsAll rain down here and the yard went from winter back to fall. Looks like some fun on the hydro but Trina looks like she's building up some additional strength to put you in a rear choke hold if you act up.
-
2 pointsHere is a comparison between original halogen and LED, as you can see the LED lights spread out evenly and the halogens are more of a spot light. Be aware that the LED lights are available in different angles of coverage. In this photo the LEDs are illuminating everything in the picture making the halogens appear better than they are.
