Since this is a snow thread I'll jump in with a story from my childhood. Growing up in north eastern Iowa we saw huge snow storms as a kid. Hard getting the door open on the house some mornings. My mom told the story of once there was a severe blizzard predicted. My dad and mom took my 2 younger sisters to Waukon about 10 miles from the farm to leave them with grandparents. My older brother and I stayed back at the farm. On the way home the storm got so bad my dad had to stop halfway home and leave my mom and the car at a friends place. The road was impassable. He walked the 5 miles to home. Meanwhile my mom called all the folks on his path to turn on yard lights so my dad could orient himself in the blinding snow. Half way home he bumped into a car stalled in the snow with an elderly couple trapped inside. He then walked to the next farm where they sent out a tractor to pull the folks to safety. He continued on his walk through the blizzard and made it to our farm. He probably saved those folks lives that day. His favorite hero was John Wayne. I thought my Dad was John Wayne....

So I have this small “ chopping” block that I use on top of bench to do adze or hatchet work even to many times just make some kindling so I don’t damage bench. Decided to adapt it to my small anvil station which also puts it at a better height and consolidates it to one area. It works really well being also having a very solid feel.

The Corn Binder When early farmers harvested corn they would either pick the ears for shelling or shock the stalks and remove ears at a later time. By the 1890's most farmers had a corn binder which allowed them to harvest corn without having to cut the stalks by hand. The corn binder put the corn into sheaves and farmers would then put them into shocks. Much like the grain binder the corn binder cut the stalks, bundled them and placed the bundles on the ground to be picked up. Once the bundles of corn stalks were in the thrashing room the ears were removed from the stalks and the corn stalks were chopped and added to silage for feeding cattle. The ears of corn would then be stored in a corn crib.

These are 6.00 X12 FirestoneTown and Country snow tires for cars. They are taller than 6-12 garden tractor tires.

I did the PAR36 led upgrade on my 416 and 312, one had the flood pattern, one a spot pattern..both incredibly bright. Did a dual led tail too.
  6. 5 points
One con of leds is since they are so white in the 5-6 k color they glare on snow.

As I said before (several times), I'm a big fan of LED upgrades. This is especially true of tractors with single cylinder charging systems. Onan powered machines have high enough electrical output to make incandescent (halogen) bulbs competitive, but with a power penalty if not on an Onan. I still say LEDs are better. If nothing else, they last forever by comparison. Just make sure you run a ground strap from your hood to the frame to prevent flickering.

The 25” tires over the 23" would up your speed in each gear by ~8% . Hoo Hah!

Perhaps all of the politicians could go out to the gas lines and talk about what needs to be done and all that hot air will keep the lines from freezing!

Rear fenders back from my painter's One is for the 520-8 I am building and the other is for a 520H that I was working on last year that has not got finished yet. I will let these dry likely until spring as the tractors are moved to a garage out back and snowed in. He still has the hoods. The red paint is finished but he still needs to paint the black grill.

I grew up about fifty miles north of @Handy Don and remember some winters when the snow would drift half way up the windows of the house. Here is a picture of the road in front of the house, I can't remember the year but it was a big one.

Here in south Missouri, we've just got a dusting of snow. My brother in law in north Missouri has several inches. Earlier this week he called and while we were talking he said his wife was sweeping snow off deck. "Now she's got a shovel and cleaning sidewalk towards driveway." He has a long drive way and I said to Larry, "Yell out the door and tell your wife when she get to the mail box at the end of the driveway to be sure to bring the mail back in!" We thought it was funny--apparently Kathy didn't. Well today he sent a picture of their snow with then caption: "Guess what I have to do when the wind stops blowing?" I replied " Spray Kathy's shovel with non-stick cooking oil so snow won't stick? I don't have a reply yet. Years ago we got some big snows. Walking over fences with just the top strand of barbed wire showing and making snow caves. My kids have never that that kind of fun. Mom says we three boys would come in with our boots full of icy water, toes red from the cold. Of course we didn't have cell phones, game boys and weren't on traveling sports teams. As we got old enough to be responsible, we did have rifles, shotguns, fishing poles, bicycles and three Harley Davidson 50cc motor bikes--One for parts and two to ride around the farm.

Snow was too wet and heavy for the little Wheel Horse to handle so out came the bigger tractor and 72" blower. No trouble for that tractor.

My 79350 48" plow I bought for the C81 came with two bolt on height adjustable bent metal skid pads. It is my understanding some long frame plows of the mid 1990's did not, but the keyholes were there in the plow blade. I welded a 3/8" pad to the underside of each.....

I understand the reasons behind the subscription model. It's just that it unfairly handicaps a small business like I have owned. I paid for a new version of Act and Quick books every few years and that served my purpose and amortized my expense in a way that made sense. Never pirated any software and never gave mine to anyone. Now I am locked out of my software if I don't subscribe. One of the reasons I have shut down my charter business this year. Corporate America has made it too hard to stay in business....they all want more $$ for less service. So fine, they won't get any from me. Just like the Chiefs / Miami game yesterday. You HAVE to subscribe to Peacock to see the game. Oh yah? Got no interest in doing that. Rant over...

Mother Nature is going to win this battle. Is it a red oak or a white oak? We had a white oak dropped into the forest a few years ago and within two years the stump was nearly decomposed. A red oak nearby was cut twelve years ago and is standing strong, don't know why.

Some WH tractors came with a duel stator. One dedicated to lights the other for charging. I am not sure which ones but figure some magneto engines came this way. One issue with using the AC side, no lights if the engine is not running.

I did the same on my 753. I mounted LED lights on the headlight bracket and ran the wires direct to the battery with a toggle switch.

Hi Guys, I just bought myself a Wheel Horse 312-8 with plow setup after my old smaller Wheel Horse died plowing in the last storm. I am curious as to if anyone has experimented with putting LED lights on one of these things and could share any insight with me. Preferably a setup that includes headlights or a LED bar and lights for the back too. I've attached a picture of the tractor for your viewing pleasure.

In addition to the LED front and rear lights, I have these rechargeable magnetic base flashers that I put on whichever WH that I'm using at the time to clear snow. Batteries have lasted much longer than it takes me to clear the driveway and highly visible for any vehicles passing by since I do push some of the snow across the street into a ditch. There's 3 or 4 different flash settings for the front light bar. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07VQ7JQSQ/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08S7LKKKR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&th=1 IMG_0576.mp4 IMG_0575.mp4

The HP (high profile) on the woodruff key is the little extra flat on the top edges that extends past the curve. You can see it on the second illustration, the side view you posted for McMaster Carr. Also don't know if those metric ones you got will fit as tight but maybe file a bigger one down to cover both bases.

Hope you don’t have any major outages down there Jim, we are used to more cold up here than you are down there, but this is even colder than what we are used to. I left the house at 7:30 this morning to go to the coffee shop like I do every Saturday and Sunday, when I started the Jeep it was reading a brisk -2, and has since started to snow. We have a generator here at the house, so no worries there. And I made sure yesterday that the old Miller would start in case of an outage at the farm so we can still pump water for the cattle. My biggest concern at the moment is we have 3 cows ready to drop a calf any day now, stocked up on propane for the heater in the shop in case we have to bring a newborn in out of the cold

I can honestly say that mine was the first piece of equipment I’ve owned that once fired up, immediately demanded respect. The second piece would be the 2-stage snow blower on the front of my 522xi. 100% attention needed at all times I have my chipper on the front of my 314-8. It crossed my mind to adapt it to the 522xi, but I don’t think I want that much engine driving it.

We added the LED PAR lights to the front and then wanted rear-facing light. This was our solution. Power and ground supplied from taps into the tail light wiring, via a waterproof two-conductor connector and up into the bottom of the seat between the pan and the cushion and on to the light. We added a separate switch next to the light bar so it can be on only when needed.

Replacing the headlights with PAR36 12W LEDs is a smart upgrade. Direct plug and play, and pulls much less amps than factory incandescents. The pic below is mine. They are 4000K, which is close to white. Higher numbers lean towards blue, lower lean pink. If you're thinking of adding more, then as has already been said- verify your charging system can handle it.
