Another one followed me home.... This one appears to be a mid 80's (tag is faded, cant see the numbers) 414-8. It has the kohler K series K321 14hp engine quick story this was listed last night (11-26) at 630pm on facebook marketplace. I messaged on it right away, and by 7pm i was loading it up. It was 10 min from my house Story behind it The girl i bought it from had it given to her by her dad last summer (summer of 2022) They were going to use it to mow the lawn on their new house. But the new lawn didnt go in until the fall of 2022, so this sat in her garage since the summer of 2022 unused When i got there, she said "my dad gave this to me last summer to use, i never used it, and i didnt know how to start it, so i just hired a lawn service to cut my grass this past year. I know nothing about the machine" I asked if it ran or if the engine was shot, and she said her dad drove it into the garage and it sat there Well, battery was dead, so in the snow i pushed it on the trailer and took it home Put the battery tender on it overnight, went out before work this morning and with a touch of starting fluid it fired right up! No smoke, no leaks, Runs and drives perfect!! Also came with a great condition plow, mower deck is the best one i have ever seen and a set of chains Should wash up nice Only thing it may need is a new battery, ill see if this one holds a charge or if its shot anyway, here is a couple pics of it! its in great shape. Stored indoors its whole life

I will soon no longer be a big dumb dinosaur, as my family says. I don’t know how I feel about this whole 21st century thing called smart phone.

This is the tractor I recently purchased as a non runner with a locked up clutch pedal. I saw the ad on Marketplace and bought it for the deck. The owners Father purchased it new in 1992 and installed a new 42" SD deck in 2018. He said he was mowing this summer when the clutch locked up and now it won't start. He just wanted it gone so he could get his car in the garage. I'm a hydro guy and don't know much about these gear drives. What I found may help you gear jammers some day. I thought the belt probably came off and jammed the idler pulley against the tunnel. The belt was worn, but still in place on all three pulleys. When I pulled the tins off to find what what was locking the clutch cross shaft, I found one of the dirtiest tractors ever. Did you spot the problem? The worn belt had allowed the plate that contacts the clutch damper to go under the plunger that then sprang back out and locked the clutch. This damper and a worn belt changed this working Wheel Horse into a junk priced roller. She sounds happy to get some fresh air in her lung and the deck is quiet.

Bingo, the small one...a 310-8. I saw this on Marketplace and the 42" SD deck looked to be in good condition. The story is the owner was mowing when the clutch stopped working and now it won't start. The clutch pedal is locked and can't be depressed to close the clutch safety switch so obviously it will not start. The tractor was bought new by the owners deceased father in 1992 and a new deck was installed in 2018. I suspect the drive belt has broken or jumped off the idler pully and jammed the pulley locking the clutch pedal.

Pretty soon. My case doesn’t get here until Sunday. Knowing me, I think I should keep Flippy alive for the week!

Well it's about dang time!!! Can Dan and me text you now? Was getting a little old having to text relay through Mrs. P. Same number? Guess that leaves only @953 nut with a rotary dial flip phone!

You can still be a big dumb dinosaur if you want to! I wonder pretty nearly every day if a smartphone is actually, smart.

Na, I still have one not brave enough yet to make the jump.

Apple wouldn't have been my choice, but you're used to their format so it will probably work better for you. Welcome to the present world Flippy !!

Do they make a case that can withstand a drop from the top of your racks in the shop and then being run over by a Senior and Put-put? A padded zippered pocket with a homing device so it can be found unlike Dan's @Achto who's wallet is irretrievably lost. It is capable of making and receiving phone calls as well as telling me what time it is and what the date is, what more would you want to do with a phone?

True ... he welds with a rose bud and a coat hanger...

BTW put it and yer wallet in a zippered pocket at plow day...

Not really what I did to my /'s, but what I did for my wife just in case I get hit by the "proverbial bus". I'm getting close to owning "too many tractors" & she really has no idea what I have. So I sat down and cataloged each one of my tractors. Included in each folder is a picture of both sides of the tractor and a picture of the ID tag (engine ID tag for the few with out a readable ID tag) Also include in each folder is a description, serial number, purchase date, purchase price, restoration completion date if applicable, details on the resto, (engine rebuild specs, tranny rebuild, etc) and approximate current value. NOTE: I did not include the amount of $ that I put into the resto. All this info is on a USB stick with a key fob on it for easy identification. Hopefully she never has to use it but at least she'll have some thing to go by if she needs to liquidate the inventory because something happened to me. Of course now I have created a new issue for my wife. She used to get nervous when I left home with an empty trailer. Now she will be getting upset when I ask for the USB stick.

Here's just a sample of what I run into operating the dredge. Like clockwork, here's the patrol that shows up for stale morning doughnuts or bread. No, I don't and won't throw a line in when working, it's not fair and these are like pets. But after hours it's a different story! Catch and release for me but if you want to keep a few, that's great! The only requirement is a fishing license since DNR does patrol and have a select few fish tagged. Lots of catfish, bass, crappie, bluegill... VID_20231126_200212.mp4

Bus comes in my lane she's got instructions to give them all to you for a dollar. I tried your way once but they came and went so fast I got no clue now! She started her own list but has tractors on it that went down the road years ago. Truck would have a blow out I send you all my old carbs...

Even the axle seals look tight and the differential gear oil looks clean. The engine oil is past due, but at least it's on the full mark. It just amazes me that it could even run with a 99% blocked air filter. The locked clutch may have saved this horses life.

Back in the day, I used something like this. IIRC they came with a few replacement elements. Nothing got through that was large enough to clog a main jet.

Shmicrons ! Agree! Our WH’s only had that screen in the tank shutoff from the factory.

PLEASE. It's always best to keep posting questions under the same thread you started about the tractor just like pullstart mentioned before. 20 different posts about the same exact tractor and engine are completely unnecessary here and it's always best to keep posting questions under the same thread about the same tractor in order to get the best response and info. I'm not sure about others, but I tend to ignore the stuff that has 20 different posts about the same tractor or engine because it always gets super confusing on what's been answered, what hasn't been answered, what's already been solved and what was already answered a whole bunch of times. By keeping everything consolidated in the same thread it gives a full history for much better responses and internet diagnosis and info. Not trying to be a D!ck here but just trying to help you get the proper info and attention and most importantly, the proper and right answers to your questions without confusion. Multiple different posts on the same tractor and engine will not get any more attention than the people who are already vested in helping you on your main thread. This forum doesn't scroll through questions like facebook does where the old stuff is basically lost forever down in a list if you don't post to keep it current. Every time you post something in your original thread it will bring that thread back to the top. Most important is that continuous thread will have all of that background info posted from the beginning. All of that background info is what actually gets you the best advice.

Another Kohler #30 carb on the bench tonight. This one's getting a throttle shaft bore washer added. Here's a pic showing the screws backing out of the shaft after I've spent a few minutes carefully grinding the backs away with a Dremel on low speed. @953 nut had concerns I may have been using reassembly hardware that was too light so I found the larger bolts (lower frame). Should be almost strong enough.

Bit bit of Trivia If you take the 1-7241 tractor model number and add 5 to the 4th digit you get the model year = 1969 The 4712b spec number was used on 1-7231 so 3+5= 1968. It was also used in 1966 and 1967.

The model number of your 314-8 tractor is 31-14K801 - the only one that used the K-Series engine.

That's the situation I have! Local police officers and game warden pop in to check on dredge ponds for trespassing and always stop in to say hello and watch me for a while. Ever since I brought in two coffee pots and folding chairs, they stick around and watch sparks fly!

Here's a "modern" flip phone for ya: I do have to say, although I use my iPhone 12 a lot, every day, sometimes I miss the simplicity of a flip phone that is just "a phone". Plus, working on machines and mowing & such with a very expensive computer in my pocket can be a bit nerve-racking. But on the other hand, I am an IT guy and actually have to use an app on the phone to authenticate my logins to the VPNs at work. But.... employer won't pay for the phone... Previous employer gave me a company phone... but then I had to carry 2 around. Sheesh.

You can quit smiling any time Ed. You may want to wear a hazmat suit when you start cleaning. If you don't feel like clean it, haul it down south to my place, I work on it all winter.

Anyone know why WH did this? I'm puzzled and intrigued by this "secret code" of sorts. Were they trying to make the year obscure in the model number, and if so, who were they trying to hide it from? Or was it a mischievous joker thinking, "hey, this will be fun and cool" or a cantankerous old fart doing it out of meanness, spite, or something like that? It just seems odd, like if there was something to hide, they didn't put much effort into hiding it. Why not just use the actual year in the model number? On the topic though, it seems more likely that it was a leftover engine from the previous year than it was repowered with an older engine. Who knows?

Eric . . . . . . FYI, those bolts on the work bench are a bit too big for the carburetor, you may want to reruse the ones you took out.

Every time I start reorganizing or cleaning up, something will be in there that inspires a new project or reminds me of another unfinished project. So then something new always gets started and the reorganizing goes to the back burner again. It's never ending and never stops, there's always a project that seems like it needs or should be done. It is certainly true that inspiration comes from the strangest places
