5 pointsI’ve been talking to a guy about this car. It’s a ‘57 Pontiac Star Chief. 347/auto with the points ignition. Runs, drives, “interior is 8/10” he says. One door window is cracked but still works. He has all the chrome for it. I feel it calling my name. He wants it gone before snow flies. I can see it shining like a patina’d diamond after a nice wet sand and buff!

4 pointsComplete workhorse, 1100 GT. Factory rear wheel weights. Has oil in the engine and oil in the rear unknown if it will run. Many many many good parts. I believe it’s an 11 hp Briggs engine. Complete tractor no parts missing. Seat is perfect. Steering wheel is perfect. Will post more pictures after cleaning. Deep dish front rims. Update wheel weights have been sold.

4 pointsSweet whip! Not near as classic, I had an ‘81 Olds Delta 88 with the 5.7 Diesel in high school. I know many people hated that engine, but it never let me down and the car rode so smooth! It could even haul a v8 Chevy in the trunk with the lid latched!

4 pointsFinished up a long overdue in depth servicing / upgrade on my 76 C120. Beyond the basic oil change, gear oil change , I added the heavy duty front spindle kit along with the matching rear wheels ( same as a 520 ) , new front and rear tires ( rears filled ) , new tie rods , replaced rear wheel bolts with studs and nuts , new axle seals , new set screws on the hubs, repainted the front section of the hood ( discolored from the heat ) and added heat reflective material to the inside , removed and sandblasted the original muffler ( usually about every 10 years ) and refinished with high temp paint , went thru the carb and rebuilt the fuel pump that was getting weak , changed out the fuel lines and added a filter , installed some non-corrosive hardware on the battery ( stainless and plastic ) , fixed / welded the all too common C-series steering tower crack at the lift arm , replaced the mule drive pulleys with the desirable early cast iron versions that have the replaceable bearings , replaced the 30 year old drive belt ( old one was still good but did it while I was in there , new clutch disc , replaced the bearings in the PTO , tightened , adjusted , shimmed, and bushed all the linkages and steering , and added LED bulbs up front . This tractor was my first Wheel Horse ( and will be the last one to go when that time comes ) and we restored it back in 1992- 93 . It has plowed snow / dirt with chains on it , hauled everything I needed it to , and has been my everyday grass cutter the whole time. Other than basic service this should get me another 30 years......I wish I had taken pictures of it before it was restored because it was really bad - blown engine, sat outside for years, surface rust on everything , original deck was rotted to pieces, but the price was right....FREE!

3 pointsI’ve been using an e tank to clean up various metal parts for a while. Latest is wheels from a 1267 that were pretty nasty. What you’d expect from a set of rims over 50 years old. Check out the buildup on the anodes. The wheel has had some wire brushing (manual) after it came out of the tank where it ‘cooked’ for a few days. wish I had taken pictures before.

3 pointsMorgan, the 14-8 and I spent today and yesterday gathering and burning leaves. We were working at the lake house yesterday, taking advantage of the refreshing 15mph breeze off of the lake helping to move the leaves up hill. The leaf blower was the tool of choice - until I had built up piles of leaves. At that pint, I dropped the deck off of Morgan and installed the snow blade. Worked pretty well to push the piles to the road for burning. Certainly seemed faster than the lawn sweeper. Today, we used the same tactics in therback yard of the house. Again, seemed faster than the sweeper, but I didn't have any way to get a definite time. I don't have skids on the snow blade, so I ad to set the down stop to hold the blade about 1" off of the ground. Ideally, blade skids and a floating blade would be best for this task. Was mulling over designs for a 6' tractor mounted leaf rake for next year's leaf season while I was plowing leaves. We've got enough trees and lawn area that building something like would be time well spent.

3 pointsI was going for a bolt on kit with no drilling required. This was an easy way to build a centering device with minimal disassembly of the tractor. Depending on the model this could be installed in less than an hour.

3 pointsPull the fender pan and you should be able to see most a lot of the hydraulics. If needed pull the right rear wheel and right running board and you really have it all exposed. Give it a good cleaning, top and bottom. Then look where the fresh oil is coming from. While the fender is off its a great opportunity to pull the center top tunnel cover and give the motion control a good cleaning As Eric posted, Wheel Horse parts and more has hoses, gaskets, seals, O-rings, cylinder and valve rebuilds.

2 pointsI recently discovered my snow plow blade moved leave’s very well, I have thought of a rake or blower but was surprised using a blade. I then mulched with the mower as its faster and seemed to work well.

2 pointsTechnically propane is considered a liquid fuel by our codes, since it is delivered and stored in liquid form. Not sure how your insurance and other codes treat it. Of course it “boils” into a gas as it’s being used in cooking, lighting, and heating appliances.

2 pointsMine is built so I can start or end with a bare frame, but able to drive a complete machine on or off. Plus I can move it around or even tow with a tractor. The center carrier locks the crossbar on the frame that the pedals ride, and the bottom on the tranny plate. Most of my tractors have the same measurement between these two points. Once locked in, the tractor can't fall off. A trailer jack lifts the carrier about 30 inches and is also locked in place when full up so no single failure can drop it. All the pivots are 3/4 grade 8 bolts. I built it 20+ years ago, and periodically make upgrades. It's never dropped or flipped with a machine and is unquestionably one of the best "toys" I've put together. If I could make a change it would be to use some aluminum in places where I could save weight without sacrificing strength. It weighs as much as a tractor by itself, and can be tough to move over rough ground while loaded without a tractor pulling or pushing it. One thing still left to do is add rollers in the middle for crossing high spots. They will be 1/2 inch off the floor on level ground, and only touch when preventing a high joint skid.

Did the work I put in this year pay off? Lots of corn still standing. Hopefully we have an eventful tomorrow! Shooting light is 6:59am in our zone. We’ll be walking out the door by 6 to be in our tree with plenty of time to rest our (my) nerves.

2 pointsGreat thread! I am enjoying the discussion. I’m setting up a workshop in a loaned, standalone 24x24 garage. Partly insulated. Since I’ll likely have this shop only for a year or so, I’m not making any significant investments. Electric service is a 50 amp sub-panel overhead-wired from the main house and we have among the highest electric rates in the US. Electric heat is a non-starter. A 30-amp mini-split would be ~$1,000 all in. I’ll likely use an indoor-safe variable 15,000 BTU propane radiant with a 20lb portable propane tank and accept the fuel cost. I’m hoping to work for 4-5 hours a day and so full blast to take the chill off and then dial it back to keep it at 60º or so would be fine. Off when not there.

2 pointsLabeled "Wheel Horse" but badly cracked ... To me, those are wall art maybe but not usable in that condition for long, if at all. Trina and I have started replacing the cylinder head gasket on every tractor we get into. That said, check around the head gasket for oil or black spots especially on the exhaust side. If it looks discolored, it should be replaced. While you're in there you should hand plane the cylinder head. That's a little time-consuming but very easy to do.

2 pointsVery much appreciated, sir! I ordered a carb gasket kit from Kohler along with the carburetor-intake gasket. I’ll be sure to let you know if I run into trouble. Which I probably will!! Makes me a little nervous hearing about throttle shaft washers!! i have the fluids changed on this puppy and went to charge the battery but of course the battery is so flat the cheap little harbor freight charger won’t recognize there is a battery connected. I may just buy a new battery for it as I don’t know the age/condition of this one anyways. i kind of have 2 things sticking in my mind - This tractor still has its original WH turf saver tires. Some hold air and some don’t. All are very dry cracked. Do people usually make an effort to save the wheel horse tires or just say forget it and replace them? Especially in the case of the front tires, replacements cost only $30 more than a set of tubes. The rear tires are a bit of a different story as far as the cost. Someone has free tires listed on FB marketplace, so we’ll see where that leads and if not I may put inner tubes in the rears and replace the fronts. the second thing is, I’m really wondering if I should’ve ordered a head gasket so I can inspect the combustion chamber and cylinder before firing it up. Obviously it has ran within the last year-year and a half, but I still have some sort of worry that I’ll run it and score the daylights out of the cylinder or something. definitely would be interested to hear some feedback if anyone would like to chime in/has an opinion. im still on a quest for a snow blade (not a plow!! Haha) and I hope to have that sorted by this weekend. my goal is to get this thing operational as is until next summer when I can take it down to the frame. I ordered the carburetor gaskets, tie rods, a shifter boot, shifter knobs, a light switch for the dash, and a new spring for the clutch/brake or whatever the heck it is! Also going to swipe the seat off of my Simplicity 5212.5 (which came packaged with the WH) for now because the Simplicity has a REALLY long road to recovery. hopefully that does it for now! I appreciate everyone’s help and advice. Forums for other hobbies and topics are a lot less helpful and typically very rude about asking questions, so this place is truly awesome 🤘🏼

2 pointsAgreed. i already have a B80 blown out in 100 pieces in my WH shed. Ill get going on that. I built that 308 last year. Spent this year wrkg on my C10 pick up but usually do the tractors in the fall/winter. Ill ditch that ghetto majic paint as well. Can anyone recommend a single stage for red? I have had pretty decent success with summit racings "brand" of automotive primers/paints. Reasonably priced for the do it yourself hobbyist. Although that majic stuff wasnt exactly cheap. with activator 75-80 bucks for the gallon. I will say this, i called there customer service, wanted to know spray tip size,air pressure etc. I got a callback from there tech support who was quite knowledgeable. to bad the product is sub par

2 pointsWorked on Tach's today. I bought the rear one from Lowel. It came red but I was going to install it on the Work Horse so I painted it black. I decided to leave it black for contrast. Lock levers are painted with cold galvanizing. Rear Tach assembled. I put thin washers between lock levers and Tach itself as well as under the nuts. I don't have the angle spacers as mentioned in the manual for the 8 speed so I made up spacers that slip onto the bolts from Stainless tubing (there are 4 total, one for each bolt). Tach installed. Lock pins installed.
