7 pointsBest pipe thread sealer I've ever found is Rector Seal. Next oil change you can unscrew everything back to the block, dry the threads and apply Rector Seal inside all female fittings. Allow an hour or so before you add oil and start the engine. I have used this on steel steam lines, PVC pipe and brass fittings for years and have never been disapointed.

6 pointsI saw this today by my daughter’s high school in St. Louis. As if this isn’t enough, there is another instructing 29 mph around the bend from this one. I thought perhaps they correspond to some nice round number in kilometers per hour, but nope. Weird. Steve

6 pointsGood morning picked up a 1983 1848 Work Horse last week. Could not be happier what a tank. It's replacing my cub cadet 1046 for ground duties on my almost 2 acre lot. I did a lot of snooping on here about this model and was definitely a big part of me pulling the trigger to buy it over a JD 317 I was also looking at. So thanks to Red Square for valuable information. Looking for a dozer blade for it now.

5 pointsI agree with Tony. I'd even go so far as to say I'm "anti" (any cheapo modern engine). There's VERY little likelihood one of those will ever be in a tractor owned by Trina or me. Cost of a correct engine can vary quite a bit. Complete running older Kohler engines can be found easily for $200-$400. Often the best way to find one is get a whole tractor that has other issues and dismantle that. LOTS of people won't even try to repair anything nowadays so nearly complete machines are tossed aside for minor needs. Try contacting ALL your local salvage yards. ALL the local small engine repair shops. Mention it to anyone around who's known to take metal scrap for recycling. It can be done. In fact once you've gotten your name out around you may even have people coming to YOU. Several of us here on Redsquare have had locals give us tractors or equipment over the years. We often also buy/swap/barter/gift amongst ourselves for whatever one another needs or has a thing for. Become a Redsquare Supporter. Keep posting and paying close attention to the model(s) you like or want. Be patient. In late 2016 or early 17 I got my first tractor. A B80. Spring of 17 Trina got her first. She has a well deserved reputation as a ridiculously hard worker and we've now done 4 full frame off restorations and several mechanical restorations. We've had several whole tractors .. given to one of us because the previous owners wanted simply to see what she'd do with them. Make it happen for yourself too...... 😊

4 pointsJust a short thanks to the people who tune in and watch my shenanigans. I made the 1,000 subscribers mark, after 6 years and over 800 videos posted. Not bad, considering I have no quality recording equipment, no electronics talent, and plenty of growing to do on camera and off. https://www.youtube.com/@PullStartStables

4 pointsI've had no trouble with Balance Gears, BUT! First, the bearings and the stub shafts have very tiny wear tolerances (Stub shaft has half a thou between new and reject, so you'd need a micrometer that can read 0.500 - 0.4995" accurately, otherwise replace stub shafts & bearings.. which leads to next item..) Secondly, the end play in the gears (Used to be a balance gear kit with several shims and new snap rings - I still have, somewhere, several years worth of leftover kit shims, I THINK. Haven't seen them in years though, they're stashed away somewhere in the shop , if I still have em. ..) can be rather fiddly, and when replacing the stub shafts (Press out, press in new) it's important to get the installation pretty precise (not something you can do with a hammer & drift punch - Need a good solid shop press and some measuring skill, and a very clean block.) - Even if you have leftover shims from, past kits, or are just putting things back in place after a cleanup, ALWAYS but ALWAYS replace the snap rings with brand new OEM snap rings Finally timing - Can be VERY fiddly without the timing tool. (I still have mine - Kohler part number 25-455-06-S - amazingly, still available on ebay as aftermarket tool (made from aluminum, OEM is plastic. The tool makes it extra easy as it holds gears in place while you knock in the crankshaft. I would agree with the rest however, if you don't have the precision tools and shop equipment to do the above (or new snap rings if not replacing) , you can leave them out - Once they wear past tolerances, it's just a matter of time before they become grenades. Snap rings when re-used almost always sooner or later let go, and then you have a nice big viewing window in the side of your block to watch the engine running (if it didn't break the rod or camshaft, guaranteed the rod dipper is gone either way.)

4 pointsOk all, I'm still alive after the local festival season, have opened a small display downtown and am working on growing the business! Last night we may have had a discovery on those settings I've been chasing. It appears my part cooling fan was running at the minimum set temperature rather than the max when set to always be cooling! So the next day or so I'll be running another test to see if that solves our stringing and gives us better detail with the higher temp materials.

4 pointsI think a good way to test them is to blow, suck through each end of the pump, flow one way- to carb but not the the other. Bring on the jokes.

3 pointsdop·pel·gang·er /ˈdäpəlˌɡaNGər/ noun 1. an apparition or double of a living person. "he has been replaced by an evil doppelganger" I was in Gettysburg Pa on Thursday, about 15 minutes from the Big Show location and suddenly had a feeling that we had left Kevin @Pullstart behind last June. I had to roll down my window and take a picture. Is it Kevin? or is it his evil doppleganger? Hmmm?

3 pointsThis is the first I’ve heard about the gear ratio being the same for a GT-1800 as a 520-HC. I don’t have a 520-HC, however I do have a 418-C which has the same transmission as the HC. I also have a GT-1800, does this mean I should have a race? Since I can’t drive both at once I’m going to need help, anyone available?😂

3 pointsThe craftsmanship you are putting into this project is just a great pleasure to watch. Having had my own adventures on this path, I can so empathize with your efforts fitting “extra” components into the small spaces of these tractors in ways that are both functional and elegant. Thanks for letting us peek!

3 pointsAnother vote for "leave em OUT". I have 2 running driving K341s. The one without balance gears has a different frequency of vibration but I'm not sure it's more. Just different. I won't be leaving them in any Kohler engine I take apart. The more we know about the amount of potential issues involving the balance gears the more I believe they should be removed and tossed.
-
3 pointsI am working on a K341 Kohler right now that provides the heartbeat of my 1977 C-160. I really didn’t do much to the engine-thank the Good Lord for that because I have very little to no experience with small engine internals. So last weekend I took a little road trip (about 37 m) up to @kpinnc’s stables so he could help me( actually he did it) remove the balance gears in the K341. After reading posts and talking to Kevin, I decided the balance gears had to go. He said if anything ends the life of the K341, it would be the balance gears. Something about if they let go, they may instantly install a window in the block. He did caution me that removing them would cause the engine to have more vibration. I decided to remove them knowing that, so out they came. We also lapped the valves and reset the valve adjustment. @Lee1977 dropped by and helped also.

3 pointsKeep soaking the ends with Linseed Oil, until it won't take any more, they won't rot. My 28' wood extension ladder was treated, like that 40 years ago, still like brand new. Unless you have other plans for painting or whatever.

3 pointsThere was an old beat up sign years back I saw. 19 MPH and thought the same thing. How oddly specific but it looked old enough for model Ts. It was on a small pot hole ridden road behind the A&P supermarket down on Long Island. Oddly remember that because I wanted to take it but didn't.

2 pointsCorrect. That is close to my setup. Anywho have been stealing parts of the parts mower. Air filter housing, seat, and muffler are pretty much done.

2 pointsUmmm, if the power tools are running you won't need the tunes! Stop dancing around in there like Fred Astaire and get some work done on Colosus!!!
