My Prayers for those people in Maine that are a part of this tradgety. I consider myself a small part Mainer from my days there in the Navy. I know the whole state is like a small, friendly community. The healing process for this will take a very long time. Just know that you are not alone...this stabs us all in the heart.

After @WheelHorse_Kid pulled a few weeks ago his older brother Aiden has shown a little more interest in tractors. For those who don’t know him Aiden was my right hand man in the garage for years til he hit those preteen/teen years. His world revolves around baseball and plays 3 outta 4 seasons and practices in the off season. So it’s nice to see him back out in the garage and hopefully gets re bit with the horse bug. This late gray 60’s hydro that they got in a package deal that they purchased last winter with all their own money was his goal. Well today he took it for its first spin under its own power. Not the correct motor but still looks to be the correct horsepower. He’s currently out there in the driveway working with Alex and they are taking the plow off. The previous owner did not have a plow bracket so he installed the rod into the hitch on the back and then cut a hole in the fender pan for the turning arm. It’s missing a belt guard but I think I have one kicking around. He says he wants to keep it gray. Someone did a great job of free handing the decal area and even on the plow itself.

A roll of Gorilla Tape has earned a place in my tool “go bag”. I’ll have to give the Sealing Tape a try!
  4. 6 points
My first thought was Gorilla tape as well. A few months or a year ago our portable garage got into a fight with a windstorm and lost. When Trina was looking online for a best case scenario to hold it together a bit longer she found that Gorilla BRAND makes a sealing tape. I believe the roll we got is about four inches wide. This stuff is SO INCREDIBLY STICKY that we found it very challenging to manage it. Once in place I would dare say it's near impossible to remove.

I told myself, hold off ! no more for now. The force was just too strong today. I just had to pick up this B-80 8 speeder. Non running and lots of patina -aka Rust ! What’s not to like ? First in line tomorrow morning is a good pressure washing then too see if this old girl will run.

I went to shut my tractor off, removed the key, and noticed the engine was still running. A quick search on the site, and I found the ignition switch part #, and placed an order for the Stens switch with a well known jungle site. The tractor was up and running the next afternoon. Just a quick thank you for those keeping the site up and running.

It’s been a while since I updated this thread. Chloe is an excellent worker! She has run a bit rich for a very long time, so I popped a new plug in and turned the high idle circuit screw in a little over a turn to get it cleaned up. No more black puff when I run the throttle up! The fuel line has weeped since I got it, and recently got worse. I found this yellow THING in there today. @953 nut has sent me some proper Kohler o-ring seals before, and they worked great but I’m out, they are about $10 online from what I found, and I came across an idea. Maybe I can cut a 1/4” vacuum line as parallel as possible and use that! Well, no leaks any more! My only question is how long will it last?

I have rebuilt many carburetors over the years, but found lately that rubber bowl gaskets removed from carburetors that were rebuilt within the last 5 years all tend to swell and get larger in diameter. However, I have also found that if I don't get back to a rebuilt, and let the gasket sit for over a week, it returns to it's original diameter.

Not yet. I would probably get one tho. My issue would be putting a tire chain on so it would pull my big ass. Look like a bear on a skate board.

Need your expert help fellas. Picked up a wheel horse suburban (I think) and can’t pin down it’s identity. Did a lot of research and think I have a 400/401 hybrid. Hood looks 400 to me but clutch pedal and mower deck look 401? Any idea if it’s a 400 with 401 parts or a 401 with 400 parts? I think it’s been repowered with a tech hh50 sometime in the past so this is not helping me. Thanks in advance for any help you could give me. Bob.

have any implements , tractor related , devices , that just sit outside ? been doing this forever , used oil paint brush , kerosene , put a good coverage on it to counter grunge , stop corrosion . once the lubrication soak , takes over the grunge , instead of rusting , it will shed moisture , and leave an oiled patina look on it . see so much rusted / decayed used to be metal , just do it , was driving my 40 + year old C 85 , in a nearby by cull de sac , stopped to talk to a simplicity guy , cables were frozen , solid rust , not a clue , barely any oil on the dip stick , etc. . opportunity hiding in plane sight , don't understand it , Pete

There should be a set screw to keep the engine pulley in place for sure. It might help to tighten, loosen, tighten, loosen, etc. you can often drive the set screw into the shaft or collar enough to hold it well with that method. As for adjusting the PTO bell, the 3/8” nuts on the bottom right corner of the picture can be adjusted in.

In your barn Joe? Looks to be a tecky on it? Might be older Dan or just not E start??? I'll never forget how Dan came across his. 40 clams at the Portage auction 2018 and had it mowing & pulling a sulky in an hour. The things grown men do for a laugh...

We used the Wally Digger Backhoe FEL to move more stone into the erosion control project area by the right side of the Pole Barn. Nearing completion on that deal.

I would try a different muffler to start with. Most backfires come from detonation after the exhaust valve. Carbon buildup in the exhaust will get hot enough to cook off any unburned fuel. If your kill wire doesn't work, and you're choking the engine to shut it off- that may be the biggest contributing factor.

Finally dug out a complete gear reduction steering from a 520 i had. Anyone have experience installing these on another model such as 3-400 series? Think the Benefits are that drastic over non gear reduction? Seems i remember reading on here that it's pretty basic... maybe drilling a couple holes in frame or something? (there are 2 bolts for the steering block on a 3-400 series and 4 for a 520 by looks of it) I'm not even sure yet what this will go on. Choices are 314-8, , or 416H.

Are we talking about an Eaton 1100 or a Sundstrand Hydro? Either way if the plate the transaxle bolts to is cracked or the bolts aren't tight that could be the bucking problem.

If you haven't done so already, I would and dump and clean your sediment bowl too. What @RED-Z06 suggested is a good idea. Adjust the carb a little richer and see what happens. And just a thought: if your ehaust valve was stuck, I doubt you'd have enough compression to start the engine.

that’s a perfect spot to fill! The manual shows 1.5 qts, but 6 speeds are spec’d for 2 qts and it’s virtually the same case. I always do 2 qts just because.

Is this a “sprung” deck??? Yes. The 42SD seems susceptible to this. A quick fix is to put washers under the offending spindle to level it with the others just to see if the cut will be acceptable. I like your idea of a stiffening plate but I would keep it at 1/8" max. I have a 42SD and 42RD. The 42RD has had multiple fine cracks radiating out from the spindle holes which required weld repair along with other issues. Both decks have problems but I have been able to resolve them over time. My favorite is the 42RD which does not have the recycler insert but still does a decent job of mulching. I just used it to mulch leaves and it did a great job. I have a zoysia front yard which I mow on the 4th highest level and it does well, just a fine line of clippings left on the right side which I go over on the next pass. I also have many trees and the RD helps with that too. I'm not sure how it would do cutting so low on bermuda. I also have a 48SD which is a backup. I haven't used it much, but it looks to be much sturdier with the 1/8" plate on top. If you buy another deck make sure it has the round rod welded to the front. My 42SD and 48SD do not and I plan to add these. If you are like most of us you will be buying at least a couple more wheelhorses and decks, if for nothing else than backups and/or for parts. Oh and you may want one for a show model. I'm in Chattanooga, glad to have another WH guy fairly close.

I aimed to be within about ¼” (~7 cm) edge-to-edge to the ground when I set up my refurbished ’68 gear drive two-blade mowing deck. The deck itself was true but I wanted to be sure the gauge wheels and the forward part of lift frame were all good as well. During the refurbishing, I did discover that one of the spindle bearings was missing entirely (not just the needles--ALL of it) so I’m sure that was the cause of the blade tips on that side gouging the shell and the excess wear on one set of gears. I ended up rebuilding the rusted out/worn supports for all three of the anti-scalp wheel mounts, as well. As for “perfectionism”--I say "to each their own." I prefer to cut my very mixed vegetation “lawn” at ~3.5” (~85 cm) and at that height so a slight difference in cutting height isn’t noticeable.

Thanks! I figured it was a set screw issue. It was getting late last night so I'll look at it this weekend.

About 6:15 this morning we heard a loud crwhack! At the road. One. More. Deer. Gone. It was a little spike 3 point and the hide looked clean and I figured I can score some chicken food and maybe a dinner for us. I have this salt grinder that broke, so I sprinkled some big flakes in cold water and will do a fridge brine changed daily for a few days then smoke the backstraps. The front shoulders were in good shape, but I have a lot to do around here and it’s too warm to hang a deer. Chicken food. I’ll roll the hide tight into a grocery sack and freeze it for now but I’d love to try tanning it!

When the drive pulley moved outward it moved the PTO clutch plate and sleeve with it. If you remove the outer nut on the clutch rod and loosen the bolt on the arm (19) you can pull the clutch bell (!) off and you will probably find the 1/4-20 X 1/4 set screw has come loose preventing the bell from sliding back into place. I would suggest replacing both set screws. Once the ends become dull the just don't bite into the key as well.

Hi KV - I like your over thinking and finding a scrap deck to weld on is a great idea but if you're a bit of a Bermuda grass fanatic like that yard suggests you are, any 3 blade deck will do a rotten job on those fine grass blades and the vacuum will be inadequate - less so the larger the deck - so a clean cut - no. The lines those guide wheels leave in the lawn are unforgivable. Your 42SD is glorious, by the way. Mow the lawn dry and it will last almost forever. I've got the 42RD, 42SD and 48SD up here in Jasper. I use them (the 48 restored right now) on the backyard fescue and crab grass. I've used it on the Bermuda - no dice, and my up and down yard isn't a help. The front and side yards get a pushed 21' cut. Nothing better. Currently running the Toro mulcher after pushing a manual Hi-Vac Snapper for the last 30 years and didn't know what I was missing. All that said, you do you. Us Bermuda freaks have to stick together.

I put one on an early 520 88 year and the only thing that was different was the steering wheel shaft was longer and stuck up higher. No big deal can be cut and re drilled. I can't remember drilling extra holes for mounting but that sounds familiar. I do know i took the engine off to assemble. was using the machine for an FEL before after '

Yeah, a little bit of both The pedal and deck is 1961 The hitch extension on the back is for 1960 because those 1960 decks used the regular rear hitch for lifting the deck Hood looks like a 1960 But with that bigger cut out for plug access I'm guessing a 401 with some other parts on it
