6 pointsDon’t really know what to call this little project…so swap over it is. My 308 might look like a nice rig but it has its issues, the biggest being the lift mechanism is buggered up. Will hold up an attachment for maybe 10 feet before it drops. Even drops with no attachments! Messed with it quite a bit and for me the easier fix is to transplant the Mag 8 onto a new machine. Picked up this roller (312-8) from @Docwheelhorse my neighbor yesterday. Won’t need that fuel tank…definitely don’t want the hood. Now that rear light I really like, that’s staying! How rough on a rig do you have to be to bust the headlight holder thingy . Gonna be slow going as I have some restrictions from a couple small surgeries last Friday…. But I can dismantle and clean up the new machine without busting any stitches

4 pointsTo my knowledge there should be absolutely no reason to remove the flywheel in order to remove the starter. What is the starter doing? If it is hanging up on the fly wheel. The starter is probably fine, but the starter drive gear is toast. Very common issue with the starter plastic drive gears on a B&S engine. If the starter gear is engaged with the flywheel, turn the engine backwards by hand and the gear should disengage the flywheel. If you could post a picture of your starter set up, I may be able to help further.

4 pointsNAPA batteries are made by East Penn, any brand made by them are the same, only prices vary a lot. Batteries last longer if kept at low temperatures, one study is below. Lead Acid Batteries Effect of Temperature Effect of temperature on battery life Lead acid batteries are cost effective and reliable, making them suitable for many applications. One serious drawback compared to some other batteries (NiCad for example), is that lead acid batteries are affected by temperature. Lead acid batteries should only be used where they are installed in conditioned environments not subject to excessive temperatures. Typically the rating for lead acid batteries is based on an ambient temperature of 25oC. For every 8oC above ambient during use, the life of the battery will be reduced by 50%. Ideally batteries should be operated at 25oC or less. In addition to operation, storage of batteries waiting for use is also affected by temperature. If lead acid batteries are stored at elevated temperatures (particularly in a discharged condition), they will effectively become useless. If storing batteries, they should be in charged and stored at 25oC or less. Batteries will self discharge over time and need to be recharged periodically.

4 pointsYou can go to the manual section here and find them for your engine and tractor. Removing WH steering wheels (and axle hubs) are part of the Right of Passage to owning a Wheel Horse. Success is like learning a secrete handshake. Penetrating oil and time are your friend. Even though you think the pin is gone, see if a 1/4” drill bit will go through the hole. If you can get a bearing separator under the wheel with some split washer on top of it to catch the bottom of the metal center. Then you puller can pull up on the bearing separator. some ultimately have cut the steering shaft and taken it to a press. Then welding or using a coupler to rejoin the shaft. Cutting the shaft doesn’t qualify for the secret handshake.

4 pointsNo more projects with names for me. IF, and I say IF, I ever get something done, then I’ll post it. Till then, I’m done. Something always comes along that takes my time, money or my enthusiasm. That being said, here’s a side shot

4 pointsWell late night in the garage. It’s 12:07 am and I just came in. Today started out with me being best man at my best friends wedding. He got married on the other end of the state. So lots of driving. Tomorrow was supposed to be tractor day with my buddy Carey (different friend) to work on his c-100 that had a stuck engine. Plans changed so when I rolled back into town he was already in the garage working on it. The guy who works on ugly green tractors helped him out with taking the flywheel off while I was gone and lo and behold it freed up! The corrosion around the stator and the mouse nest pieces that were in there must have stuck it pretty good. When I rolled back into town I taught him how to clean a carburetor, installed new points since his were rusted shut, re wired all the wiring to the points and to the coil test spun it and saw great spark so we added a test gas tank bypassing the fuel pump which I haven’t checked yet and she fired up. The exhaust is definitely full of marvels mystery oil that didn’t make it down to the piston when he filled it so next step either tomorrow evening or Sunday morning is to get it out of my garage and run it and let it burn off some of the oil. I still need to do final tuning on the carb but we are both pretty happy that it came unstuck as easy as it did (but because it was stuck it only cost him 100 for the tractor) after dreading the worst. I do love bringing these things back to life after they have been sitting for who knows how many years.

3 pointsThis week I purchased a wheel horse tractor at an auction for my boys. Since purchasing, I have done research on them and have a few questions I hope someone can assist with! What is the exact model of this one? It has an H60 engine on it, however, I am not able to find a tag anywhere on it. When I purchased it, the transmission was locked up. I found that it was dry and just needed some assistance getting the pulley spinning, what kind of oil does everyone run in their transmissions? Is 90 weight acceptable? After getting it home, I took off the recoil starter and cleaned out the mouse nest, I checked it for spark and it doesn't seem to have any. Are parts readily available for these or should I consider a powerplant change? Thanks in advance! 20230915_222044031_iOS.heic 20230913_231948780_iOS.heic

3 pointsThis should be the part that you need to fix your starter. https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/SME703455?cid=paidsearch_shopping_dcoe_google&campaign=GSC-Small-Engine-Lawn-Garden&campaign_id=11655985660&adgroup_id=112185060854&adtype=pla_with_promotion&gclid=Cj0KCQjwx5qoBhDyARIsAPbMagAImTLx7uWDbLH43BSXOlwIrHLU-oFzIIJGoyD5s-Ot3wW4AbczK2MaAjsaEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds& Available other places as well.

3 pointsCorrect Howie but I'm a believer in cleanliness is next to godliness. Pop the flywheel and give everything a good bath & degreasing including the fins.
-
3 pointsI think one of those bolts is under the flywheel. They can be taken off without removing the flywheel though. The bolt can be loosen and then feel up under flywheel and rotate engine to a spot on the bottom of the flywheel to allow bolt to be loosened completely. It stays in the starter and the starter can be pulled out. Done this numerous times on customers engine to cut down on the time it takes to do the job.

3 pointsBrought the C-120 out today to remove some pine needles, leaves and small twigs from the trails today. Usually I try to do this right before the M & G but had too many projects on my plate around here this year and only did it this past spring one time. Thankful that we did not get any damage from the storm yesterday.

3 pointsI spent most of the day moving a piece of pegboard from the old basement workshop to the new barn workshop. Clean it off. Disassembled. Cut it 90½" long. Notch the end and a hole for the electric plug. Reinstall with 9 HD deck screws top and bottom. This is ¼ thick and tempered. HD pegboard. No middle supports. After that I organized and hung everything you see along with doing a few other things here and there. Trina and her mom have been steadily working on firewood when they can. Today they were adding to the stack under the right side shed roof. This stack is 14 ft long by 6 ft high. As they go there will be another in front of it.

3 pointsNice work! We love going to Logan steel. Always come back with more than we need. Most of the custom made parts on our pulling tractors come from there.

3 pointsMy daughter bought a like new "totaled" trailer that was in a campground that was hit by a tornado. She paid about 10% of its value, then replaced the bent jack and the water heater that was allowed to freeze and burst, no other damage. Can you spell insurance fraud?

3 pointsContact Lincoln at A to Z Tractor to see what he has for you, https://www.a-ztractor.com/. He has good used parts and new replacement parts. Seats, air filters and mower deck blades can all be found on Be sure the blades are the correct size for your deck, there is quite a variety of decks that fit the 310.

3 pointsWe do a very similar setup here. Same lineup. Same procedure. Same concern about toasting a battery. My battery tenders are 1 amp manual. The charger I use is fully automatic. If/when I forget to switch them over it won't overcharge.
-
3 pointsMore of the story... She had it fully refinished within a very short time back when we got it. We inspected it, did some research, and spoke with our local Fire Chief. It was "highly recommended" that she had a separate fire box built for it. Trina asked a friend who happily made one up of extremely heavy duty materials. It was about 3 hairs too wide. We had the option to partially disassemble the stove to fit it in but decided that wasn't the best idea. So the friend took it back to redo. Folks got busy. Life happened. Etc. A few weeks ago the insert got back here. We were waiting then for a day that wasn't ridiculously roasting 🥵🥵🥵 outside because we knew it would need to be cooked slowly and off gassed. Yesterday was the perfect day. Cool weather with a hurricane pulling away so the wind was able to ventilate the house.

3 pointsI don’t have a D, but I’ve read many times about the splined coupler between the engine and pump being a weak-failure point and those parts getting harder to find. Also the hydraulic tubing manifold between the front hydraulic pump and rear hydraulic motor being a leakage prone area. The manifold uses O-rings to seal.

3 pointsto the You have found a great little tractor that deserves to be preserved. Please do all you can to keep it original. Looks like the boys have you off to a good start. We are here to help.

2 pointsIf I remember right @Achto I had to pop the flywheel on a "92 Briggs V twin to change out the plastic starter gear. Was a vertical tho... 246H. No big deal as it came off easy enough and wanted to clean underneath anyway. Took longer to pull the tins. The starter gear was 6.98 for TWO in the jungle.
-
2 pointsThe effective tip to tip length becomes shorter and decreases the overlap as the blades are ground back. The shorter blades may start to leave an uncut strip first noticeable when turning.
-
2 pointsAre you using this machine year round and not for winter duty. If a good weather tractor you can opt for less cold cranking amps and store the battery in a warm area for Winter. Will save some money doing it that way. I can't say enough about NAPA batteries.
-
2 pointsIf the transmission needs oil you may want to flush it first. Put diesel ir kerosene in it after you get it running. Run it around abit and drain. Repeat if alot of sludge comes out. When relatively clean fill to the top of the plug with the oil Dan said.

2 pointsThis is an average price for a 22NFD battery, if that is what you need. https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/c/lawn-garden/super-start-lawn-garden-battery-group-size-22nf/sbe1/22nf/v/a/127768/automotive-suv-2014-jeep-cherokee

2 pointsyes it does. My D project is probably getting ready to be sidelined. Just a fact of life. I need to finish Skittles and my wife’s tractor anyways.
