Folks are busy in some trades. Ridiculous busy. But common courtesy is not so common to the masses anymore. If I make a call or text I expect a return. If I call someone more than twice they RARELY get another chance. Contacting someone for a service or repair multiple times is drama and time spent I don't need and won't tolerate. He's out.

I know there are mixed emotions on this model because of certain issues seem to follow these around. Myself it is one of my favorite models in the WH line. It is the hardest worked WH that I own among the small collection I have. Would like to see some of your favorite pictures either at work or rest of the two models.The first picture is @Raven on her first WH experience back in 2009. Might as well start her on the big machine first in powder to get the feel for it.

Started with this guy about 7 years ago. Back then, he was responsive and energetic. Last year I went through hell trying to get him to come out and do preventive maintenance, but he kept stalling me. He didn't show up until I said to be here or I'm getting a new guy. This season, he's pulling the same song and dance routine. I want to dump him, but my wife likes him. He's a smooth-talking tap dancer. She likes car salesmen, ticket scalpers, and all-around flim flam guys. If I can't count on him to get his sorry self over here for the PM, I believe he'd drag his feet on a cold night in January. I say get rid of him- he didn't learn his lesson last season. Am I being a constipated, unreasonabble, cranky old curmudgeon, or am I right to find a new guy? This past spring I fabricated a front bracket to hold a winch and act as a suitcase weight holder. I began my search for the piece of steel I needed at McMaster-Carr and though they are fast and reliable a premium must be paid for their product. I found metalsdepot.com and sourced my need at half the price. This morning I did the same comparison for some 3x3x1/4 aluminum angle I need and again the price is nearly 50% cheaper at metalsdepot.com.

It is used for rolling tubes into tube sheets of coolers or condensers. The center part had three rollers that can be adjusted by the large nut center top.

This is a business decision and should be based on facts, not feelings. He doesn't value your business and certainly has no friendship respect for you, or your wife, either. Tell your wife you don't owe him anything. Your relationship is based on business and he is no longer a good business decision or time investment. If he's banking on past success entitling him to poor service going forward he'll learn the hard way.

One minor thing to bear in mind, especially with cranking by hand, if points are running off the camshaft like most K series, you're only gonna get a spark every other revolution - Unlike lawnmower engines (which are a waste spark system - that is, they'll fire every revolution - once at top of compression and once at top of exhaust, which is wasted spark - K series with points operating off the camshaft fire only at top of compression stroke (Which trips up newbie using common inductive tachometers - with many of those that count RPM based off ignition pulses, you gotta "double" the RPM reading to get a true RPM's, unless the tach has a means to account for it - 4 stroke vs 2 stroke) So rotating engine by hand, can be difficult to test for a reliable steady spark if you can't get it rolling through multiple revolutions at speed fast enough to generate a spark.... just something to bear in mind.

I’d say “next!” The older I get the less tolerance I have for things like that (and many other things for that matter!) Especially if you have plenty of others to choose from. Maybe you’ll find a smooth talking flim flam guy who will actually get the job done and then you’ll both be happy!

I can see both sides of that coin and also been on both. I've had conversations with people about disassembling a good or mostly good tractor. Many (or most) of these parts are not being made anymore. They have to come from somewhere when we're in need. One good running whole tractor can supply the parts to keep quite a few others from becoming useless and obsolete. Sacrifice one for the good of many.

I've had a couple 520-H and one 520-8 that was a very rough (even for the south) parts machine. None had reduction steering but all had the swept axle. I had to cannibalize one 520-H to have a good tractor, as one had a bad hydro and the other a blown engine. I used the best of both to make the one I still use today. It works like a dog, and never complains. The only thing I don't like is the high mounted DCL, but I plan to change it. Meet Pinkie:

Back in 1979-80 as an inspector during the construction of 2 600MW coal plants the condenser for the steam turbines was my responsibility. Each one had 12,000 60 ft tubes that we’re installed on site. Each tube had to be rolled into the tube sheet on each end. That’s 48,000 rolls. I did a calibration roll on each roller twice a day. If the tubes are under rolled (under expanded) they leak. If they are over expanded (over thinned) they crack and leak. If the are rolled deeper than the tube sheet thickness they fail. Those air guns driving the rollers were noisy in those water boxes. I bet @squonk or @peter lena has seen these before.

Hello! I looking for a little advice since I have never been to this event , it always conflicts with the Iola car show/swap. I would like to try it in 2024 for one day. It’s a Thursday , Friday , Saturday event…..if you could only go one day which one would it be? thanks for your input!

Perhaps you should have your wife take charge of having the heating system serviced. If he doesn't respond to her you can rest assured she will change her mind.

My son Mike keeps two of his plumbers on call just to service old customers, but unless it's a real emergency, he has to turn away new service calls. Most of his guys are scheduled on new HVAC installation projects It's a challenge to find any new people interested in the trade.

Carpenter’s in Camden, NY is hanging on. The area is so rural and economically down that the big box stores are still 25 miles away. On a visit with my oldest grandson, he wanted to know why there were numbers painted on the floor down the main aisle. I realized they were for measuring out rope, wire, and chain from big rolls at the rear of the store. Last number was, if I recall, 90 just inside the threshold of the front door. He wanted us to buy some rope so he could see them do the measuring! An additional plus is that they hire young people for the summer and the old timers give them an education. We were helped by a 2nd year engineering student who’d been working there for several years and she got us to the right parts drawer in about 10 seconds when told the length, diameter, and TPI for a bolt I needed.

Depends on the tractor model. They attach differently. What model are we talking about @gwood

@formariz congratulations ! cutie , the older we get , the more you appreciate them ! always look for the opportunity to hold them , grew up in a household , where my mother took in abandoned babies , NY CATHOLIC CHARITES , a week to 10 days old , kept them for a half year , and gave them back , to get another , handing off your little brother / sister to one of the nuns , was heart wrenching . mom did that for 27 years , 2 babies a year , thats 54 babies , still have the old black / white 3x3 photos' . never forget , Pete

Since Almost Heaven is here in Indiana (well, about 3 hours from me), I had to take a closer look (not in person...yet...). Looks like they've grown since the picture posted in the thread Eric pointed to. I just drool and want a closer look when I see something like this - especially the "red" areas. Dang, why can't I zoom in closer!?!

Have the same trouble over here with tradesmen. If you can get them to turn up for a quote, if they don't like the look of the job they either quote ridiculously high or just never get back to you. Or they are just a labourer with some tools saying they are a builder etc. My brother has just had some building work done, the guy used self levelling compound in an outdoor toilet and filled the sewer with it. Costly clean up bill. A friend has had a big remodel done on her home, the builders are sloppy, messy and have been at this job since January. Projected completion date? March. Now here she is in September with the house still a shambles. There are precious few tradesmen any more, mostly they are shysters who make a quick buck then disappear.

Not unlike pushing an electric clutch off a straight crankshaft. The taper keeps it aligned, the bolt keeps it snug on the taper. The bearing on the end of the rotor supports during rotation. What amazed me about this video is that he did this on the floor and not on a bench. My back and knees were feeling pain watching!

The fan attaches with 4 screws. You can see the holes in your picture. That pulley looks original to me. I don't have the tractor anymore to give you another pic

Stood around and shot the breeze all day about Wheelhorses.

A few weeks ago, my wife and I and a good friend of ours were eating lunch at a restaurant in Lexington VA, and heard this song over their sound system. I believe this was the first recorded version of this tune, and it took me a while to realize that I'd heard some quite different versions of it over the years... And the versions I remembered...

I love my wheel horses BUT I don't care what color the machine is if it's the right tool for the job.

Got the transmission and some parts sanded and look at the frame planned on welding on it tomorrow night then started putting the transmission back together

Having time this weekend yay to work on the old 753 started too finish fixing the gas tank on the bolt hole got the steering system a lot better next is to work on the front axle and the pin then rebuilt the transmission

Good deal Chris. He's already got a fist full of 3rd gears Bill ... came across the mother load on fleabay once I think he told us. Think it's gonna need axle tube bearings though. It's in good hands.

Got the motor and the wiring off start working on getting off the front pices that someone put on it and look at the steering system
