Just picked up an 856 from a landscaping supply company in South Bend. This little guy had been purchased new in ‘66 and tended the same plot of land from them until the early 2000’s. It’s been worked harder than most and is definitely rougher than I had hoped but I’m really excited to get to work. At some point the original Kohler failed and was replaced with a Magnum, not sure how many hours on the new engine. I talked to the guy at the family owned landscape company and he said they used it to cultivate the fields.

Ive never really liked using an abrasive wheel chop saw for metal stock. Gets the job done, but really makes a mess of things. So whenever possible I would use one of my portable bandsaws I keep in the work truck (pipefitter) Had been trying to get my woodworking bandsaw to function as a metal cutting saw, but couldn’t find a blade that would really work at those speeds. Anyways, stumbled on a market place listing for 75 bucks for a purpose built metal cutting band saw. Was a little rough on the eyeballs, but it cleaned up well, and I decided to try Krylon Fusion paint, as the Rustoleum has really gotten expensive. The paint went on well and dried really fast. Not Sure how durable it is, but should certainly work for its purpose. So far, happy with it. The angle Iron cart it came with was a complete surprise bonus. The casters alone are probably worth 50 bucks.

We planned to spend our 60th wedding anniversary in Hawaii, but plans change. Spent the big day at OSS Hospital getting an MRI on Mrs. Ks ailing back. She had L3,4, and 5 fused in 2017 and is now struggling with some pain. Sept. 8 1963 2023

Friday at about 5PM ordered a 6 feet bronze bar from McMaster Carr. Immediate confirmation and delivery scheduled for Monday. Get home today and BAM, there it is less than 12 hours later and on Saturday.

Nice find. A true time saver as you can basically set it and forget it and go do other stuff while she's cutting. Especially nice for bigger thicker material and or many pieces. There's little adjustments of the rollers to get the blade to cut straight and true but once set up, it's nice to have everything cut square. Run some practice pieces for a long cut, maybe 4-6 inches or so and make adjustments as necessary until that cut line is square the entire length. I prefer using a variable-pitch blade and a higher TPI blade for thinner sheet metal stuff

handy dandy. got one on the cheap too. has cut a lot of metal. and sometimes use it in the upright position. I have both 18T and 24T but use the 18T more just got to be careful on thin stuff. ditched the Harbor Fright blades and I spend more on the Olson Hard Back

HOORAY FOR ME.... I WON. Finally, I was rewarded with a SIMPLE solution to the K341 engine rev issue: The Clamp on the Governor arm was NOT tightened to the Gov Rod...just loosely fit by P.O. Reset the Gov arm as per 'INEEDANOTHER' above, clamped it tight in position and PRESTO...no more over-rev. YEAHHHHH. Thanx y'all...

Well with summer coming to an end, I’ve really been putting more thought into tinkering with the 1975 C-160 I acquired probably a year or more ago. My shop is a little cluttered from past projects so I decided to tidy up a bit. Got started trying to straighten up and the Shop-Vac on/ off switch broke. Of course I HAD TO take it apart and mess with it. The switch itself seemed to toggle back and forth just fine between on and off. But, the green and red buttons on top that work that switch just wouldn’t cooperate. Then I thought “heck with it”. I did not want to order a switch and then the green and red buttons not cooperate with the new switch. I’m just gonna get a new shop vac. But, it has a perfectly good cord on it and my Skil Saw is needing a cord. I decided to put the Shop Vac cord on the Skil Saw. I knew I was getting into tricky stuff, trying to take a Skil Saw apart and wire in a new cord, but I got it done. When I got the handle apart I found a warning label which I would not heed anyways. I didn’t know I had to take the brushes out to change a cord !😆 IMG_3057.mov

I’ll have to do that, add the drain tap for the gear box. I’ll look into that once I get the shop back in order. Been rearranging stuff ever since I decided I wanted another work bench. That turned into a total reorganization of the shop. Wasn’t planning on spending a good chunk of the day cleaning and repainting the band saw, but I had to do something while waited between finish coats on the new workbench.

Nice score. I have the HFT version, works great ONCE YOU GET IT TO TRACK PROPERLY in both horizontal and vertical positions. I did two mods right when I got it - drilled & tapped the gearbox for a drain - 1/8 NPT short nipple & cap. The "as shipped" lubricant needs to be drained and replaced with 400 weight gear oil, to protect the worm gear. The stability of the shelf you for vertical use was totally inadequate as supplied. Modified to add the necessary rigidity. I completely agree with @wallfish about the premium variable pitch sawblade - cuts better, straighter and is somewhat self cleaning. FYI - I could NOT get the tracking correct using the as supplied cheapo carbon steel sawblade. Switched to the variable pitch - no issues..... I purposely did not mount it on a dolly - my celler floor is far from level and I don't need to chase it.

I get a call a day before Thanksgiving. School has a critical air handler that blew it's belts off. Takes 5 of one size. 3VX530. They have another unit the same model, same age ect. They want the belts replaced on that too plus enough spares for both. So where do I get 20 of these belts? I don't want Grainger's Dayton crap. I call McMaster. " We got 63 of them and they are Gates brand". I tell him I have to have them by Fri. AM as the school is closed. I have keys to get in and can shut everything down without causing a ruckus. He says they have the UPS truck there and they are all ready being pulled for loading in the truck. Fri after T giving. No Belts. Call MMC and they say yes the belts left but the Nor'Easter forced UPS to pull their trucks off the road. Only time I never got what I ordered in 2 days. We had an old guy at work that always got names and phrases mixed up. Instead of saying "opening a Pandora's box " he'd say "opening a pan of boxes" or he would say "She smokes like a fish!" He would call MMC "Master McCarr"

You can use a motorcycle battery there. Trina had to do that in her Military Tribute Tractor when she had the larger sized Tecumseh engine. It's an easy adaptation. If there was a way to ship the battery you'd be welcome to it but I can certainly get the numbers from it for you. This is super cool. One owner machines are uncommon whether residential or commercial. I'll be looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

Found this neat pile of steel on @Sparky's truck. I figured it would make a great front weight for something. 12" x 4" x 4" Totals out about 52+ lbs.

We worked on the erosion control project for a bit this afternoon. Got some more sand and stone moved. We're some past the halfway point now.

This one is branded Buffalo. Think HF cloned this type, or whatever this is a clone of. Ive seen them branded as shop fox, grizzly, HF, cal tool, Wen, etc. HF doesn’t originate anything. They only reverse engineer other stuff thats on the market. This one is made in Taiwan, but its 20 years old and still holding up fine. Ive seen these Taiwan jobs that are 40 years old, same design.

@Heatingman we used to have SIMALAR , PORTA BAND SAWS IN ALL OUR SHOPS , always making up metal , brackets / fittings , like a third arm , don't force it let the saw blade find its happy place , safety glasses , etc. , background horse looks good Pete

Yes I am extremely familiar with it since I used to personally pick up items from there during my travels . They are 65 miles away. I have however ordered items from vendors much closer to me than they are and never once I have received the items in this time frame. Ordered on a Friday right at closing time. Order fulfilled and shipped same day. Granted that they have the UPS trucks parked on all of their docks all day. One gets full another one replaces it immediately. Any other vendor would also be charging overnight and or Saturday delivery charges. Those alone for this oversized item would be in the hundreds of dollars. $27.95 shipping.

I ask McMaster how they could deliver so quick sometime. They told me some of their warehouses have UPS depots inside. off the shelf and on the truck. Plus I have to add no junk, mostly US made items.

I've made a free DOWNLOAD file named UPGRADE.pdf. It'll show you what to do to 'upgrade' the Electro 12 to accept the 'Tach-o-Matic implements.... with ease. This method eliminates the awkward SIDE belt drive... changing that to FRONT belt drive as is used from 1973 and newer model tractors. With this, most ANY mower deck can be used. I fabbed up a piece of aluminum flashing and riveted a washer on it for a spring to hold it on for my sickle bar for the exact reason. Going to shows and keeping intriguing hands away.

Many Onan engines suffer valve seat problems and if the intake valve on a cylinder is not seating completely the pressure leaking past it will cause the problem you are having.

The point here is that they consistently ship faster than anyone else out there. In fact they ship faster than most take to just process the orders. Their communication is immediate including tracking numbers. In addition to all that they always include item’s spec certificates. Who else does that without requesting ? Even requesting it is a problem with most not even understanding what is being requested. The arrangement they have with UPS is unique. Essentially they ship overnight or second day without charging for that service.

I used a metal cutting blade on one of my upright bandsaws and even had an oil drip set-up on it, the blade overheated unless the material feed rate was VERY SLOOOOW!

That is what I have been using for the past half dozen years, best can in the world for filling tanks located under the seat. Around $ 25 for the 2 1/2 gallon size at Wally World.

Where is the battery mounted now? Years back I used a motorcycle battery mounted in the tool box under the seat on a Predator conversion, worked fine.

If you add the belly hitch, front hitch adapter, and the "T" lift found on everything after the early seventies- you can carry just about any "newer" mower deck on that machine. 36 side or rear discharge, 42 side or rear discharge, and the 48. All will work.

Door design is relatively simple for your purpose and it probably won’t differ much from each other. As for hardware I probably have more than enough and will never use it. Hardware will vary as per door size and weight . I have a large variety of it in stock here.
