8 pointsThe early transmissions had courser mushroom & differential gears in them than the newer ones did. If it has a newer Suburban tranny, maybe it is new enough to have the updated gears. This would be a good thing in my book. Heck, I'm younger than that tractor is and I don't even have all my original parts. Personally I would keep it & enjoy it.

8 pointsI have heard it said on here many times but price paid for something doesn’t always mean a whole lot. We have all over paid for things. Enjoy this little tractor and think of the story it could tell on how it got to be the way it is. This tractor was completely incorrect and had been through a fire. Literally wrong engine, frame , hood stand etc. now look at it. Like it should be. Most wouldn’t have bothered. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder

5 pointsHi all. Just about to set off to the Yorkshire County Cricket Ground at Headingley near Leeds . We have tickets to watch two games of The Hundred. A new format of our great game Cricket. It's a bit like baseball but far more interesting Each team has 11 players, who face 100 balls from the opposing team, scoring as many runs as possible. The team with the highest score wins. i hear that the most wonderful game is coming to your shores and that one day we shall be playing the yanks at cricket, probably being beaten by them too if the pesky aussies are anything to go by . Anyway, as its the wettest year since noah had to build his ark we are hoping it stays dry for a few hours at least. Mick

5 pointsFound another one. Again in northern Indiana. Well used. Mostly there. Runs and drives fine. Original owner threw some later model decals on it. 👎 Gitty up!

5 pointsMost Kohler single cylinder stators should put out around 35 Volts AC, give or take. This has to be tested above half throttle. Preferably full throttle. 3600 RPM. One of the most important things to remember is that these are DC systems. Direct Current. No ground equals no circuit. Bad ground equals bad readings. Be sure the engine is well grounded and connected to the battery ground. Be sure the Voltage Regulator is well grounded.

5 pointsI hate it when they know stuff before us! OK I'll set an alarm for 12:01 and happy him then... NOT! I'll just wait till tomorrow and forget...

4 pointsWell I see you are a year older. I guess wonders never cease to amaze me. Remember I still have boots older than you.
-
4 pointsLuckily my wife is civil and I can pretty much buy 15 and she wouldn’t care. Sometimes she comes down there to get in my way but I enjoy her company as I don’t have any shop buddies that come over. My 20x20x10 shop with a 18x25 awning on the side is plenty big enough for all the “crap” I dig up. This is my latest project. I will be picking the new horse up Friday afternoon as soon as I can!!! Hopefully he does not sell it out from under me! BTW she knows if I need more parts storage half her closet will be gone! No need for video evidence!
-
4 pointsIn your case, Eric, it could just as easily been your woman who put the trans in there. Or running parts through the dishwasher. Hanging painted tins on the clothesline to dry. Etc. You are a lucky man.
-
4 pointsI find that my wife being at home is a severe hindrance to my acquisition of parts or projects. I can usually semi-hide stuff if I can get it home and put away while she's not here, but she's on me like white on rice if she's here. Always something about not needing more junk, get rid of stuff, etc...

3 pointsIs this guy @stevasaurus a wealth of information or what? He never fails to amaze me with his transmission knowledge! @tractorchick As I’m sure you already know that you’re in good hands here, seriously the nicest and most knowledgeable people are here on Red Square! 👍🏻

3 pointsThe engine won't fit in the original holes in frame. It hits the clutch pulley so it has to go forward. That's why I'm making a motor plate that will mount thru the original holes in case I put the original Kohler back in .
-
3 pointsPulley finally came for my diesel. Gotta figure out drive belt length. Its gonna be somewhat a guessing game I imagine. Took a couple measurements. Also gonna make engine mount plate because engine doesn't line up with original mounting holes. I'll bolt it thru original holes because I don't wanna weld to original frame.

3 pointsRemove the reg. and clean the back and the mounting surface to bare metal.

3 pointsLittle by little. Got the crank installed. Had to order a new nut and washer, so i had to wait until they were delivered. Packed the bearings with new grease. New chain. New kick stand. Waiting on pedals, seat post and clamp, and seat. Starting to look like a Wheel Horse. Thinking about asking @Vinylguy to make a headbadge for it as it dosnt have one.

3 pointsThere are cast numbers on the top of the trans right near the shifter. Maybe post those to date the trans and the position of the tab like Steve wrote could help us figure out what's going on with it. The pedal linkage was changed push instead of pull so I'm guessing the trans is from a 60/61 suburban. Certainly not the end of world and only collectors would know the difference. Putting a Kohler K91 or Clinton B1290 engine would certainly make it look better. Repop belt guards and heat shields do show up from time to time. That one looks better than my 2 RJs

3 pointsKate, put a pic of the brake drum and band on here. If the mount for the band is vertical, it is the right trans.
-
3 pointsYou have helped me see it in a different light. Right now I can put the new steering wheel on and install the right engine and enjoy it. I'm overthinking it and am being hard on myself for what I paid for it. It will be a nice addition to my 401, Snoopy 854, and 500 Special. I'll keep you posted. I need to churn on it a bit more. I appreciate all of your responses. What a great group!

3 pointsThis is really an excellent idea. The tractor has problems from previous owners that are common to so many different brands after 70 years. Besides your ahead of the game with all that is solid on that tractor. Part of the fun is researching things like your transmission having the incorrect side plate. Even things like fixing the hood to eliminate the rivets lends itself to demonstrating a couple of technology's (welding or for the non welder some of the new automotive adhesives) Steering wheels lend them self to writing about how to fix cracks with epoxy or maybe making a custom wheel. With them being a little less common in Texas we take a couple like this to make one (This is a parts of a 1960 & 61 Suburban) Now almost ready for reassembly.
-
3 pointsKate, what do you think about doing a build article in LAGT magazine highlighting how to find the parts for older tractors, contact experts, and get help. With the resources here on RedSquare, we certainly have you covered on the knowledge front. Example is Steve knows the transmissions inside and out, can certainly help with that. I would imagine many of the parts vendors would be happy to help with mention in the article and I would be willing to help facilitate this on the forum in an exclusive area. I think this would be an amazing article, good promotion for our members, vendors and experts and of course not bad publicity for RedSquare.

2 pointsLooking good, I use a rope that fits in pulley like belt would and it gets me pretty close on lengths. I also use original holes in case it ever gets changed back to original.
-
2 pointsKate...I think that is an A 25-0...if so...that is "A" = January 25th 1960. "A" is January...25 is the 25th day... and "0" is 1960. That means you have a #5010. I still want to see how the brake band is mounted...that is the test. The #5003 is the right transmission for the RJ-58. The #5010 is the right transmission for the 1960 & 1961's. OK...that being said...I still want to see how that side plate looks with the brake band mount. That means a lot about how the linkage is fabricated. Don't worry about what Wallfish is saying yet. There is only about 5 of us on Red Square that can see through the casting to see what is inside. The early #5003 had a mushroom gear that was an 8 tooth upper and 44 tooth bottom. The bull gear matched the 8 tooth upper. This was a weak situation and Wheel Horse changed that tooth configuration to the popular 11/44toothed mushroom gear and a different bull gear to match. In the #5010's, they kept the 11/44 mushroom gear and the bull gear, but they changed the bull gear to a bolt on to the differential and they changed the brake drum shaft outer bearing to a needle bearing. They also changed the brake band mount to a 45 degree angle and changed the push linkage to the pull linkage we see in the suburban's. That changed how the linkage worked the tension pulley. I would not worry about any of this really-at the moment. Show me the brake band mount...that is the clue we need to know. Let's not worry about the inside of the trans right now. This all depends on how correct you want to make this.

2 pointsIs there an RJ58 manual or parts diagram available? Again, I'll get more detailed photos this weekend and post them. I appreciate all of the encouragement!
