13 pointsSo our brothers from a different mother... the Iowa boys. Mike & his boy Eric Meuch brought this gem to the Portage Show. It just fascinated me. A 854 with what appears to WH factory paint in a dull green. Not much known about it other than it was made for a company called Detecto based in Clarion, IA and they modified a stock 854 to meet their sales. Apparently it was set up with a hydraulic drilling rig on the rear and used for boring holes along gas line routes and sniffing for gas leaks. They are the third owners and the PO did some mods to use it as a trailer mover. PO cut off the drilling rig but thankfully saved it and they have it. HY tank underslung with a elaborate system using the orginal right mower pto for operation. Hy pump runs off the mower pully. Note the hy motor to run the drill and the long skinny cylinder to raise and lower it. Hoses long gone. I think some more research is in order. They didn't do much with it but did have it running. The muffler is some sort of spark arresting style. No other WH badges other than the steering wheel cap and SN decal. A rare find west of the Mississippi. Hope my pics do it justice.

10 pointsI have had this apart for over a year due to other projects I had. Did a valve job on it. Waiting for a few parts to finish up. Hoping to bring it to Zagray this weekend if not bring something else. Hope you enjoy the picks.

10 pointsSome pics... ther was a horse there that was truly a unique one. One you just don't see often and quite rare. Lots of pics on it and the story in it's own thread.

8 pointsGave my legs a beating this morning. I love riding and really should do it more regularly. We have miles and miles of rail trails around me so I have no excuse for being a couch potato Just over 12 miles and kept my average speed in the double digits I use the Under Armor Map My Ride App, works well.

8 pointsGot the motor bolted down and put gear oil in the transmission today the old 753 slowly coming back to life
-
7 pointsGot the call at 11 that Gramps' old JD X300 dropped a rod at 275 hours. Shed where my Raider and WorkHorse are kept is currently mired on account of a burst water main (And weeks of almost nonstop rain), too soft to bother with even trying to move them. That left the freshly painted Raider 9.. haha. Missing the hand lift so I rigged up the old tow behind mower, and later the sweeper, went to work on the 4 acres left to mow. Performed like a champ.

6 pointsA few pics from my camera. A very well done narrow front round nose, along with a few others. This creation. . The A&W invasion. We had a Friday night cruise around the show grounds, which ended by taking a trip up to the near by A&W. Jacob found an alternate use for his new low dollar tiller.

5 pointsTook RJ apart. Initially wasn't going to paint it but it wasn't a correct color & had a few spots where paint was coming off. Got some parts painted w/1coat. Do another coat tomorrow. Plenty little things to fix. Whoever did refurbishment before didn't use cotter pins- used bent up nails??? Most the bolts are all mismatched so I wanna correct that. Simple little details need taken care of. Wheels & seat are painted white they need refinishing. Think I wanna go with the almond or antique white??

5 pointswell, now the rig has 5 of 8 metal ones! now that I’m home, I’ll break down my last three and do it myself.

5 pointsThe tire fixer was quite young. “Joey” at Pomp’s didn’t quite know how to remove a valve stem. I pulled my knife out, slit the backer off and pulled it out for him. I figured it would be a lesson he wouldn’t soon forget. The shop manager told me the valve stem is $8, but to just take care of Joey. I handed him $50 in 10s and 5s and thanked him for his help. A few other guys had other to-dos with the repair, so I did what I was told, and hoped he would share the wealth with his buddies.

5 pointsGot the b100 out I picked up last fall for a 100 bucks and finished up some details on it. The Hydrostat works great and with a new carb the engine runs great. It’s a great worker tractor. I always wanted to put ags on the front of one of these even though they serve no real purpose. Still looks cool as hell I think. I don’t know if anyone grows rhubarb these days but I am amazed by the size of these leaves. I planted these from a root early spring and the leaf pictured is just under 36” across. Huge leaves for a first year plant. Although I have to admit the garden is at my work which happens to be a fertilizer plant lol.

5 pointsTerry's decals are very user friendly and can easily be installed dry, but I install a lot of decals ( automotive ) so I'm comfortable doing it. However, if I use a lubricant I 100% recommend Windex. I have done several Trans Am hood birds, Dodge Challenger hood blackouts, thousands of pickup truck 4X4 bedside decals, and Windex is the way to go. There is nothing in Windex that will damage the painted surface, can't say the same thing for every brand of soap out there.....

4 pointsMy significant other has been wanting to go ocean fishing for quite some time. I set one of her brothers and wife up to go striper fishing together with a friend who owns a Charter business 30 minutes from home. They had a great time and the rain did hold off yesterday. Patti just cooked up dinner, nice to have fresh fish on the table.
-
4 pointsWhat is it with you guys and valve stems. I've around vehicles and RV's for almost 50 yrs. and never saw a failure on the road. Might be time for some metal ones.
-
4 pointsDid some radiator swapparooskiing on the way home from Portage, WI, about an hour from home. Momma found my “spare” in the back barn and met me to finish the job! I had 1/3 tank of fresh water in the camper and plan to replace the rad with new now that I’m home. I also finally got my warranty air bags and fittings since making a claim 3 weeks ago.

4 pointsAfter hanging out with @wallfish at all these shows I’ve learned to always have a tow strap to haul him or his “outa gas rigs” back to home base. So don’t worry if it konks out at the show Gary, I’ll haul ya back
-
4 points@squonk @pfrederi @oliver2-44 Mike, Paul, and Jim. The throttle stop did the trick. Now it idles at 1350 and high speed is around 3200 if I hold the throttle out.

4 pointsPut the deck on the Free10-8 for the first time. Fired it up and engaged the blades and it is whisper quite. I was also able to squeeze it into the garage with the other 3 Horses even with the deck on. I couldn't be happier.

3 pointsI poured two fingers worth of my Wheel Horse over 4 ice cubes, added a some lemon juice and Diet Coke and I am sipping it as I read the forum.

3 pointsI would have if you were at the TSC on Gull Road, it's walking distance from my house. Glad you made it back!
-
3 pointsAfter striking out finding new I went for the repair. carefully removed the old plate to use as template. 1-14/" hole saw, 3/4" drill, piece of .125 steel ,some red dykem and some grinding and filing I have a working fork. the steel was thicker then the original and I had to thin down the area where it fits the gear but maybe it it will be a little stronger. The old plate was bent pretty good but it is only 43 years old. Transmission now back together and shifting feels good.Test drive in a couple more weeks.
-
3 pointsTell them about the apprentice that changed the valve stem and how you had to pay for it! I went over my data limit so couldn't post anything till I got home. Get a bunch of pics up after done unloading.

3 pointsSure wish I could. 😞. You would be surprised though at how thick that tank is. You could fill in the cracks with plastic weld and sand it back down. A soldering iron with a flat tip and some good zip ties would do it.
-
3 pointsFull, bled, started! Building temp again, we’ll take a short drive for a lunch break and check it again.
-
3 pointsIf the oil is coming from the valves then it is worn valve guides or the oil isn’t returning to the sump. I would start by removing the plate where the valves would be adjusted.
-
3 pointsStill a single pedal to control the clutch and brake. Engine turned 90 deg so PTO is facing front. Tight belt to prevent slip to a shaft that is going to run under/through the frame rails to allow for a completely flat floor step through 2 seater. Then a 90 deg gearbox will exit off that shaft to connect it to the trans via sprockets and chain. Lots of freedom to speed'r up or slow'r down by changing a pulley or sprocket. Think I'm going for speed and it can have plenty of torque in low range. Manual trans. Those guys at Stevebo's M&G have been getting pretty fast lately and Kyle beat me on the Bike on the top end last year. He didn't necessarily dust me but he was moving pretty good.
-
3 pointsThis might be considered to be sacreligous, but what about applying the same treatment to a nut roaster type Wheel Horse. Then one could drive it from place to place. Maybe even put bells on it like the old ice cream carts and drive it around the neighborhood to make a few extra bucks on the weekends? One would need a 10 acre field to turn it around in, though. @Pullstart BBQ chicken, anybody?
-
3 pointsIt's getting tougher and tougher to find something original to build. Scratch that one now! Not the same but building one running with a wood gasifier is on the "project to build that will never get done" list. https://www.build-a-gasifier.com/PDF/FEMA_emergency_gasifier.pdf

3 pointsNot a bad price but only if the lift handle raises and lowers the fire grate .
-
3 pointsBoy ... If only you had a lift arm. I bet I know where there's 1 or 3 I could part with.
-
3 pointsVery nice looking tractor Spense Hopefully we all can see it up close at the M & G in 2 months.
-
3 pointsLikely you have axles from a GT14. They're several inches longer than a standard WH axle.
-
3 pointsI’ve personally had no dealings with these transmissions, but, looking at the corrosion/staining? on the area between the thread and the anti-extrusion ring/‘O’ ring section, I wonder what the condition of the bore in the valve block is? Any ‘Pitting’, etc could cause damage to the seal, and potential leakage, when valve is assembled, or operated. After you find the cause of the issue and fix it, I think this could be another area to apply, @peter lena,s tactics, identify a potential issue, and fix it, before it becomes major! In this case ‘High’ temperature grease on the valve section, thread and up to the ‘O’ ring, to protect against moisture ingress, and corrosion. It’ll also ensure that when you need to use the valve, it won’t be seized! It’s surprising how moisture can be drawn into, (over time) a, (‘Sealed’ by threads) compartment after being exposed to heat, and then cooling down in a damp environment. (High humidity, washing down, etc). The air expands with the heat, is forced out via the threads, and the partial ‘vacuum’ created on cooling draws in the moist air. Witness some automobile lamps that seem to accumulate water! As for the ‘O’ ring, is it from a seal kit for this particular product?, or is it from a ‘Selection’ box of ‘O’ rings? The ‘O’ ring kits, I’ve always found have a larger section, and don’t usually work well in valve blocks. In this case though, a slightly larger section ring may deform into a ‘squarer/wider shape, and might then seal, (if you can assemble it without any damage?).
-
3 pointsJust speculating, but that O-ring looks a little narrow in the slot that it fits in. If you can find a size slightly wider, which probable would make it slightly taller as well. @daveoman1966 can you comment on what the correct O-ring size is for the TOW valve?
-
3 pointsThat's basically my line too. Can't remember what I had for lunch so... If the axle is long enough to fit through 2 hubs on each side that's some long axles from something.
-
3 pointsEveryone here is dry today! Mostly at least. We’re taking a road trip to A&W here in a bit! Friday Fish Fry in Wisconsin? Naw! @ronwh we’re missing you Buddy!
