Well went and did it again. This little guy came from NW Indiana. The story goes an older gentleman bought this new back in 64 and owned it up until the last 15 years due to his passing. Neighbor was friendly with the family and would help them out from time to time. About 5 years ago the gentleman’s widow called him over one day and gave it to him. Very nice of her. Next 3 years his son would use it to ride around the yard in then it sat for a couple more years. Was always garage kept. The older gentleman obviously took good care of it because it’s in better shape than me and he’s older. 🫤 It has been touched up in a few spots what looks to be IH Red brushed on but tastefully applied. The good, starts, runs, drives and mows, straight metal all around. Very little rust, Tank doesn’t leak and screw holes aren’t stripped, original tires that are NOT weather cracked, original carb, oh and of course an original nearly mint backrest pad. The bad, some brushed on paint in spots(doesn’t look too bad), gear shifter is loosey goosey but works, replacement gas bowl but have the original, pan seat has cracking (replaced temporarily for repair) parking brake needs adjusted, right deck spindle cover has cracking. All in all I’m very pleased. He still needs a major bath and the general round of maintenance. Gitty up, cheers! F26715EB-ED8D-4F23-99EC-FA9A48624AC0.mov

Gotta tell a quick one... I used to manage road construction projects for a community. One of my contractor's foreman was very upbeat all the time... he greeted me on the job sites routinely with "Jimbo, I've got the greatest job in the world!!! people drive by me in construction zones all day long, honking and signaling to me that I'm Number One!!!" Of course, he animated the story with the appropriate hand gesture... Great guy and a great attitude!

My 414-8 hasn’t done a single chore since it got here 2 or 3 months ago…well today that changed. With a 42” RD she mowed the whole yard. Tractor performed flawlessly, deck could use new blades or sharpen the ones on it.

I don't think the guys on here building stuff worry about "off topic" custom stuff questions. It's all relevant! Don't think I've posted anything before but have made suggestions about it before. The thing to consider is it doesn't necessarily "beef up" the spindles because it's still the stock 3/4 spindle bend. But you can add braces like the heavy duty 3/4 spindles as a way to do that in addition to this. 3/4 ID x 1" OD DOM tube. You'll need a short piece of 1" ID x 1 1/4 OD to cut for 1/4" slivers for the ID of the seals that are on the inside of the bearings. The ends of the spindles will need to be drilled and tapped for bolts to hold those bearings in place along with washers. Basically using bolts to serve as the castle nuts to tighten them and hold them. I might be pulling those hubs off the can-am bike to work on the front end of it and a pic is worth a 1000 words. The DOM tube can't be the exact size but it's sold with a couple/few thousandths over/under. IE: An Exact 3/4 ID will not fit on an exact 3/4 OD because they are the same exact measurement. A couple/few thousandths difference is needed for the tolerance to fit over each other.

Rob - nice score. The 854 is a great worker. Looks to have one repaint. Replacement correct muffler. Time for a new shift boot?? Removing the shifter will allow you to peek inside . and adjust the looseness in the shifter upon assembly. Nice to see the removable side covers are in good shape and intact on the "suitcase" deck.... most go missing.

Those 45 degree bar lug tires that have Wheel Horse on them are extremely hard to find! To me the 854 was the best looking of Wheel Horse models. Wild Bill in Richmond VA

Cut the grass with the 310-8 and then took the old Chevy out for a ride in the country. It really makes you realize that you don't need half of the gadgets that the newer model trucks have to enjoy the ride. The 4 speed manual makes the ride even more enjoyable.

LET"S ALL BUILD WH TRUCKS !!!!!! We'll have to get Eric @ebinmaine and Colossus involved here too! I've been trying to build a WH truck (Gator type of thing) with a bed since 2010. Seems every time it gets started it turns into something else. Little seater way back when started out as being a truck. I'm think'n big tires up front. (Trailer hubs with 1" bearings can be added to regular 3/4" WH spindles with DOM tube.) That's what is on that new can-am bike. That build actually started as another 2 seater, then a truck and ended up as "motorcycle" type of thing. It still needs plenty of work and tweaking but I'm ready to start putting some stuff together for a WH truck build again. Already have some 1" spindles, trailer hubs, bunch of frames, Couple different steering gear setups, engines, ideas and an old trailer to donate as the bed. My thoughts are to try and keep it short as possible so it's lawn limo with a bad steering radius. You guys might have more room where that's less of a concern. One thing I can tell you is splitting the axles and going front suspension can be time consuming. Sharing ideas, successes and failures as it goes helps everyone.

Hello Bob... best to let the machine shop do the measuring and telling you how far you need to go. Unless you have the instruments to do it your self. Be sure to check taper and out of round. With whatever size you end up with the shop should fit the bore to the new piston since the pistons available nowadays can vary.
  27. 4 points
The size depends on how far they have to bore it out to get a good, clean surface. These numbers are 1/1000ths of inches. So your options are no boring, bore 10/1000" oversize or bore 30/1000" over. You might mention to the shop who will do the work that you can only get standard, .010 and .030, with no .020 available. So, they will need to just hone it a little, or go .010 over size or .030 over. If they go .020, you will have to find .020 rings for it to work. If it's not severely damaged, they might be able to just hone it (you could do that at home), or maybe take off .010. If it's in bad shape, they might go .030. It depends how deep the damage is.

Found some files. This should cover the D series Sundstrand trans. Think that was originally built by a guy from FL. Very nice build the guy did as I remember seeing down in PA. You can post a wanted ad in the classified section here on RS for a D series Transmission. @gwest_ca is the manual guru here and he'll make sure you get the right manual. Used parts are available so the good people here should be able to hook you up. I never had a D series tractor

You may be right. I haven’t done anything to it yet. I did notice what you’re talking about. Sometimes it functions properly and then sometimes it bounces around. I think the generator works because I’ve started several times and so had the previous owner on the same 3 year old battery. I plan on changing the belts. It’s nice to have the original everything but belts I’ll replace for sure.

If the fuel checks out check the valve clearances and adjust as necessary. Add a shot of Marvel Mystery oil to the fuel which will lube the valve stems. A shot of 2-strojke would do the same thing.

Sorry no pics🫣, did a bit of backlash/play removing on the PTO linkage on the C161. The “Hoop” has a small amount of wear at the pivot points, but the triangular arm has more. The trunnion will be replaced by a “Rose”/Heim” joint, as per @peter lena suggestion. The shaft running in the bell thrust bearing requires shimming to remove excessive endfloat. The 3/8” screw for the fixed pivot for the operating arm is being replaced by an M10 bolt with an unthreaded portion under the head. This takes up the wear in the holes, and ensures the arm pivots on a non threaded section. The well worn hole in the arm was repaired by heating around the hole, and then “Forging” the hot metal around the hoop, until the fit was tight. A quick touch up with a flat and a round file and the fit was restored, (no welding/drilling/bushing required). The fit of the hole on the “unworn” end of the hoop was very tight, but after “persuading” the arm down to it’s usual position, it turns freely with minimal play!

My 312-8 with the Kohler Magnum engine did this after I fitted a stainless steel muffler. The exhaust valve was sticking, due to excessive heat retention, (apparently an issue with early Magnum engines, necessitating a dealer recall to increase the guide size slightly). After cooling down, the valve would close and the engine could be re-started. Next time it happens, spin the engine over on the starter and see if it has compression or not? Mine would coast to a stop on releasing the key, instead of stopping almost immediately!

Yes they are. Used in the blackhood series. The metal brackets holding in the lamp is the real deal. If you blow up the pic you can see the other style of clip in the open hood.

To you Kollin since you are still very young and impressionable ,Richard not only is kind but he is also extremely wise as evidenced in countless comments he has made over the years referring to many different subjects not always relating to tractors or machinery . Comments such as “ when they try to keep you out, you draw them in” have a lot of meaning and good advice if you allow yourself to read ,think about, and understand them. You will learn a lot from the individuals in here like Richard ,tractors probably being the subject of least importance . It is people like that that will make a lasting impression in your life which will benefit you and you can pass on to others. Great of you to recognize good when you see it. Take advantage of it and always let them know that their words were not wasted.
