What have I gotten myself into now? Always was a fan of ford farm tractors. I remember my grandfather had an 8N when I was a kid. My former bus driver when I was in school asked me if I wanted this since I liked to mess with old tractors. So he sold it to me for a price I couldn't say no to so I guess I'm messing with farm tractors now! I'll have to dig it out after the wheel horse show when I have some time. I did get it to run though, hydraulics didn't work, but. I'd say the pump lost prime from sitting. Also excuse my ugly mug in the pic!

Clyde, the C-195 has a muffler that is kaput. The inlet pipe has separated from the end of the can, leaving the can and exit pipe to rattle around. Direct replacement mufflers do not exist. If they do, I have not been able to find them. So, I stopped by the TSC store the other day and bought a Stanly IH-1 muffler for $33. This is intended for an IH Cub. The pipe size is right, but the can section is too long, as you can see in the following pictures: The general plan is to try to shorten the muffler to fit in the same space as the original. Here is what I have to start with. The new muffler and the pieces parts of the original muffler: Step 1. Adapt the original inlet elbow to the new muffler (grinding sounds, sparks): Dang. Sorry. Moved the camera. Well, you get the idea. Step 2. Tack the old elbow onto the new muffler (more grinding sounds, sparks, and wire feed welding sizzle), then a trial fit on Clyde: Obvious hood interference. No way I am going to chop up the hood. How much shorter does the muffler need to be? Not enough hands to run the camera, hold the muffler and the tape measure, but the muffler needs to be about 3 1/2" shorter. At this point, my wife walks into the shed and asks what'cha doing? So I explain the plan. She gives me a quizzical look, then says 'why don't you hang it outside of the hood? I think it would look funny (amusing is what she meant).' So I close the hood and place the muffler in the classic stack position. She says 'Yup. Like that.' I explain that I don't really want a stack. I get the 'are you crazy?' look, and she walks off. Well, I get to thinking that making a stack would be a whole bunch less work than sectioning 3 1/2" out of the muffler. So, I says to myself 'self, why not give a stack a try? I can always hacky chop to fit it under the hood later'. Tomorrow, I'm going to visit the local muffler shop or NAPA store and pick up a couple of clamps and a 1 1/2" elbow. Stay tuned.

A couple pics of the rafters ties. The next rain day I have I will be whittling out 108. 1in x 1.5in wooden pins to fill all of those fastener holes. I'll leave them a bit proud approx 1.25in.

As usual, it's always a mad scramble right up to the last minute to get stuff ready for the big show. What used to take a couple hours to do before now takes all day so there just wasn't enough available time to get'r all done. It seems this build will have enough done to bring it but just not enough time to work out all of those little things I want to do and change. It will run and drive but no way can I pull it all apart again to do all the bracing and some welding for the stuff that's just tack welded. With rain coming this weekend it'll shorten the available time too so I'm just going to do some quick temp stuff and as much as possible. Plus I still have to drop the early production RJ58 down from the loft and get that going too. That one hasn't been out and about for 7 ish years, so that needs a good going through as well. The 59 RJ is firing right up and ready to go

As if ethanol isn't enough, there is another potential problem brought to you by the EPA. I wasn't aware of this problem on lawnmowers till I saw this video. Keep those old horses running. Black Stuff

Good idea for that full skin check. I had two cancers found. Squamous removed from my face and melanoma from my shoulder this year. Safe bet I’ll have a few more found and removed before I die of old age (currently 57). I’m now going every 3 months for a year and if all is good then every 6 months and eventually back to once a year. So all you young guys! Don’t be like me…wear sunscreen!!

The pier centers are made from 18"dia. 6in thick precast concrete. Two heavy duty concrete blocks mortared on top. The rock are mortared to that at a 30in x 30in. base size to approx. 22in square top. They actually sit on the ground. Yes the rocks are sourced local. They came from a small gravel pit across the street from my childhood home. Transported approx 5miles to location. The piers with the pocket for the center beam has 1/2in copper pipe mortared in for a weep hole. In case of moisture accumulation.

Thumbing though the typical ads in a 200 mile radius of SW Pa., I see where WH prices are somewhat down. Machines with decks that run can be had for $600 and sometimes better. Availability seems good too. Certainly not to good a time to sell but to buy. I am out of room and time for the summer but I still look. (and I don't know why) Recently noticed a couple 520's in the $700 range and those are usually around a $1000. How is your area?

I absolutely love it when we are ripping along and that American flag is flapping I wholeheartedly agree about the American flag flapping. When we had boats, Ole Glory was always showing her colors with us. Now, when we go camping, our flag proudly fly's. I helped a neighbor mound a flag holder on the front of her house. Now when I sit looking out of my shop door, I enjoy the red, white and blue waving in the breeze.

Pulling this out of the weeds boys. Getting close and we get this BS nonsense out of the way. I say that because I'm not going... Who's all coming @ronwh @Achto @Pullstart @Shynon @prondzy @CasualObserver @wheelhorseman who did I leave out? Oh @dclarke @Lane Ranger others I'm sure. @jeremi3210 We need to come up with a menu for Saturday smoke. Much to my distain beef (read brisket $$) might be out of the question. Maybe one of Kev's chuck roasts? A small one for ho derves? Some pork of sorts or barn yard buzzards? Dan's under orders to take the day off fathers day and catch carp for Friday fish... but plan on mac n 🧀 on the 💩 shovel for a side.

Solid seat Steel foot pedal and those type foot rests say 1960. The choke and throttle controls should be levers, not push pull type 1960 400 and 550 Suburbans are the same tractors but with different engines At least they raised the hood instead of cutting it for adding a bigger or different engine

Here in RI, the availability of whole running 1960's and 1970's horizontal shaft tractors posted seems to be drying up - all TOO much "Ran when Great-Grandpa parked it in the weeds next to the shed" type of overpriced rust laden, once was a red tractor.though. Good only now for Yard Art...... And the sellers STILL believe it is their investment!! (I feel they should invest in used only once toilet paper instead)... About the same...

Its bad down here in the south (NW La) I frequent facebook and CL and I havent bought a horse in 2 1/2 yrs and had to drive 90 mi to get it. The few - VERY few that do pop up are either junk overpriced or decent and overpriced .... along with being many miles away. I am really bummed with being without a horse to work on. I have always bought one to do a pretty deep 'refurb' on and put it up for sale (I erven made $40 profit on one!! - not counting time!) The enjoyment of taking a 40odd yr old wonderful piece of a good ole American quality and bring it back to being close to its original .... beauty? gives me great enjoyment. And, it shows when I put one on Cl or FB, the longest I waited for a buyer was 10 days, most times its 2-3 days selling and I dont recall ever having to quibble over asking price. I can recall only 2 guys even driving one! I just crank it up and give a little background and they wanna get it on the trailer and GO! I get a mighty good feeling when that happens........ and I MISS it!!!

I had a friend that spent all of his none working hours on boat, car and snowmobile racing, he never had time for a girl friend or wife to watch his back. When the irritation on his back got severe enough to see a doctor it was too late. He was a great guy that only made it to his fifties. Listen to Sparky!

Good advice guys, I'll add my ... First, back up half a step... If you haven't had a full physical in a while, just do it, you know you should. When your primary doc says "you have some areas on your skin that I don't like, I'd like you to see a dermatologist for a full scan", just do that too. Don't wait like I did -- I got lucky, but it could have been much worse. And when your dermatologist says "we should take care of these areas soon", let him do that. When he says "I'd like to see you again in x months", make an appointment for your next visit before you walk out of the office, before you forget or change your mind. And finally, all that advice you hear about sunscreen, and wearing a hat and long-sleeved shirts and all that, listen to it, because it matters. At some point in your life you might come to realize that being in the sun really isn't that exciting any more. All right, so maybe that was worth.

I have a buddy who owns this Jubilee. He is looking to do light farm chores with it. His “farmhand” tore it down to the short deck and decided it’s too big a job for him. I don’t know how long it’s been sitting without a head or oil pan, or if it’ll roll over. I have no idea what it really needs, and plan to pull the rod caps and pistons if possible and do some micrometer work. Considering that there won’t be any huge chores for this, and they have a newer JD loader tractor for brush hogging, would a 2N, 8N, 9N, NAA, etc… engine fit if I were to find one? The only thing I’ve found so far is that the newer “hundreds” tractors had a 172 that bolts in place of the 153. We’re not looking for a puller, just a runner and not a sitter.

I find that if the listing is overpriced - wait it out. Local guy had an 875 roller, a rebuildable 32" gear drive and a total trash 36" deck for $200. He had no bites in a month. (He also had NO clue what he had - it was part of a Storage Locker auction he won.....) The listing expired; he reposted it as "Need it all gone ASAP - $60" Got it all for $55 cash. Spent another $100 to get that 32" deck back in working order. Not a bad deal..

Had an appointment with the dermatologist today for a skin cancer scan. The doctor was soft spoken and she was wearing a mask, so I did mot understand a lot of what she was saying. A lot of 'repeat that please' on my part. Just to make sure, I repeated what I thought she said in plain English to confirm what I thought she said. Worked out in the end - all good and come back again next year. Point here being, keep up on your own maintenance checks, and if you don't understand the doc, keep asking questions until you do.

That is most likely due to ebinmaine buying them all! Prices are all over the place here in Michigan for what is available (a lot of vertical shaft powered machines and >12HP machines are popping up lately), but it seems that much of what is there, for all brands, is over priced and/or worn out junk. I missed out on a complete Work Horse GT1848 for $100 last week while there are quite a few rusty, cobbled together 310s & 312s, or similar, people want $6-800 with a very questionable engine with a rusty deck. There seems to be a decent amount of 520s (H and xi) for sale in the $700 to $2,000 range and I may be adding to those listings here soon.

Looks like this one is a 1954 then. Had no idea the '54 badge looked so similiar. Learn something new every day!
  38. 2 points
A 1953 Ford tractor would be a Golden Jubilee, while a 1954 would be called a NAA, but technically 1953 and 1954 were both NAAs. The badges of a 1953 and 1954 were pretty similar. Attached below left is the 1953 Golden Jubilee, the right is 1954 NAA. Untitled.tiff

From the looks of the badge on the front it appears to be the "Golden Jubilee" which was an anniversary model. 1953 I think. They can be worth some $$ especially in the nice condition this one appears to be in. Looks like a restoration well done. I would exhaust every option to keep it original with a rebuild on that engine if possible. My grandpa had one, was one of my first tractors to drive...called it Henry. Nice tractor there!

Kevin - it is too nice to not finish it right! Always burns my butt to see rust in the cylinder walls and water in the oilpan just from improper "storage". Makes more work later... It may be time to yank it before you try to crank it.. How does the head and valves look - may need a little or a lot of work there....

The flats on the rails helped but didn't totally resolve the issue. Some time before that they issued another service bulletin stating that 40w lube should be used to help. A much more positive fix was service bulletin 60. Old rails on the right, newer on the left. This was a newer version which was most likely due to manufacturing process changes. They are fully interchangeable. Keep in mind though that there is a difference in the first/reverse and 2nd/3rd rails. Note the center detents, Make sure you use the longer 3/4" stop pin if you put the newer rails in otherwise is won't help.

There is a PA at the Family practice I go to that a culmination of things makes it almost impossible for me to understand just what she is saying about my test results. Drives me crazy!! 1. She speaks English as a second language. 2. She is quite soft spoken. 3. She speaks rather fast. 4. Yes, being almost 70, I can no longer hear as well as in my twenties - I attribute 46 years of Marriage for that !! I have to constantantly ask her to speak up, and slow it down to a level I can grasp. (I bet at home with her 2 kids there is a loud "Mommy Voice" in there...).
