10 pointsIf you will be mowing with it and/or having your children operate it I would go with the newer Classic because it has safety switches that could save a life. I know that some people think of the safety switches as being a pain to deal with but I appreciate the importance of those switches.

6 points@Sparky asked me what his screen name was. Simply @phil bowling was good enough. Posts in 9 years? 0. His input behind the scenes on many projects was very appreciated. His knowledge of all things of old was priceless. I’m glad to have met him at the Wednesday night dinner before the Big Show, in 2018. We had been buds ever since! Thanks Mike for turning his name green, I hope his soul is truly at peace!

5 pointsAlthough I have the original Kohler & a 2nd era correct Kohler (shout out & thanks to Buckeyes from this forum- he gave me engine!) for my RJ I decided for the time being I'm gonna install a 196cc ebay diesel. Since hood has been trimmed & I don't have an original fuel tank I thought I'd go the diesel engine route. Might be more cost effective to just buy a correct, restored RJ? Should be interesting.

5 pointsAgreed. Either do that or send me the ORIGINAL carb. I'll rebuild it and send it back to you. I've had 4 big block Kohler engines with 4 cheap carbs and all 4 were junk. The isavetractors carb John bought for the backhoe before I got it is working fine.

5 pointsCorrect me if I'm wrong but the PTO/Seat interlock was what I was referring to. It is so easy to get off the seat and have the mower sitting there turning at full speed and move an obstacle out of the way. Rotating blades and moving belts can cause a lot of damage if you aren't careful. They had the PTO switch that prevented starting the engine with the PTO on but I don't think they had a seat/PTO safety to stop the engine if the operator leaves the seat.

4 pointsI bought one of the Chinese Carbs a few years back and found that the idle and high speed needles did nothing to improve the performance. The reason I bought it was the the throttle shaft was too far gone on the carter. I did an autopsy on the Chinese one and found that the main jet and it's seat were way bigger so I took them out of the old one and put them in the Chinese one and it worked fine. Since then I have accumulated a few used Carters and just rebuild them. Had I known about the bushing to correct the throttle shaft I never would have gotten the Chinese one in the first place. If your throttle shaft has any side to side movement (more than a tiny tiny bit) you can put a bushing on the top of the carb to correct it. Kohler makes one part #2515802-5, 7/16" o.d. x 1/4" i.d. x 1/8" thick but I have never found it in stock at Partstree or other online parts places (you might find it on ebay). If you have a hardware store with all those little parts drawers you can get some brass thrust washers 7/16" o.d. x 1/4" i.d. x 1/16" thick Hillman part #58087 or McMaster-Carr part # 5906K561and stack 2 of them in that little recess in the top of the carb body. sometimes i find after installing them the throttle shaft fits a little tight, so i take a 1/4" drill bit and ream them out by hand. don't chuck the drill bit in a drill it will be to aggressive

4 points@Skintraditions As others have said it could be the points are not opening or it could be the wrong ignition coil.If you are unfamiliar with gapping a set of points I save Tractors has some youTube videos worth watching. @Save Old Iron posted some drawings to help you determine if your coil is correct.

4 pointsI was getting the guys together for a Wed. night get together back then. About a week before the show Phil messaged me wanting to know if he could tag along. He told me he didn't post but just read topics. I said sure. We had a tailgate at the old Comfort Inn in Scotland and it was me ,Phil, @Aldon and maybe HHHOOOWWWAAARRDDD!!! About 4 years ago right before the show @Buzz put a wheel barrow trailer up for sale. I saw it posted just before I went to bed. I messaged Buzz and the next morning Buzz told me Phil had already bought it. I had been trying to find one for a while, I messaged Phil and gave him the business about buying it during the cover of darkness. He replied he really didn't need it and I could have it for what he paid. That's the type of guy Phil was. He dropped an engine off at @richmondred01 for me one year and bought several items off of me many times.

3 pointsYou don’t adjust mow height with the hydraulic lift, you use the lever for the rear deck wheels. Download the manual for your deck model and do ALL of the adjustments from initial install to the end.

3 pointsMy 1973 14-8 has a switch on the PTO to prevent it from being started while engaged, but no switch on the seat to shut the engine down if the operator leaves the seat with the PTO engaged.

3 pointsSad to hear this. I first met Phil many years back at Steam O Rama. A true gentleman and kind soul. Along with my son I always enjoyed listening to him. Another great loss of someone that in very few minutes would leave a lifelong impression on someone. They are becoming fewer and fewer. We should remind those we feel this way about of how we feel about them before we lose them. Some of my greatest regrets in life is of not having done so.

3 pointsThat's what I was thinking too but I don't have any newer models to compare. Definitely a very good point. As mentioned above a magnum would give good convenience but safety is absolutely paramount especially around people unfamiliar with the machine or young children.

3 pointsThe C series is durable and simple to work on. Its Kohler K engine is durable, but it has points and a coil to maintain. The Classic probably has the Kohler Magnum engine with magneto ignition and no points. I prefer the Magnum engine, but I also have a C-120, and just have to clean and adjust the points occasionally. If you're a 'collector', then the C-101. If you want it for mowing, then the Classic. Depends on how you're going to use it, the condition of the tractors, and personal preference. Both good tractors.

3 pointsHis friend Scott was hoping to have a memorial for him at the show in a few weeks. I'll keep you posted if I hear more on that. He was always waiting for me and the guys at the Lebanon, PA show and kept in touch as we traveled there from IN to PA. He stayed at the booth with us, entertained us with his vast knowledge of mechanics, and went to dinner with us every night. He never forgot the goodies.....peanut butter whiskey, Baltimore cookies, chocolates, etc. Phil was kind, thoughtful and intelligent! The news is still raw and very sad for me.

3 pointsI am not convinced that the fan gear is the problem. The lower steering block is broken - fairly common. You will need a new one anyway - replace that first. The action between the steering wheel shaft gear and the fan gear seems to be OK. There are various styles of lower steering supports, they are interchangable, but some are "better" than others. The early 1960's version had thin tabs to mount to the frame and no thin bushing for the shaft - the least desirable of all. Later they added the bushing in the same casting - a bit better. The "best" version is newer, has thicker tabs and the bushing. For what it's worth, I modified the early one and the steering wheel shaft - added an upper bushing, grooved the shaft to make grease pockets, added a bushing to the fan gear shaft.

3 pointsCheck to see how it was maintained. We're the engine tins removed and the fins cleaned. Biggest cause of overheating and burning rear valve seat. Also check the nine pin connector for any signs of overheating or burning. Other then that, if the price is right, buy it.

3 pointsAfter several Weeks of Rain with just a Sunny day between, we have here the first 3 sunny Day‘s following. Nature grows like an explosion. Yesterday’s Mowing was a Challenge for my Horse, not because of it‘s Engine Power, more because of the Beltwear. It chews 3 Belts at a grassheight of 35cm even with opened Sideexits. So i decided to Rework me a own Highgrass Mower for my 656. Here is the first Testdrive. (Actually with only one Bearing in the jackshaft, the second is on the Way...)

3 pointsServiced the C160. Replace a failed wheel bearing. Changed the oil with Rotella 30W and the Hydro with Mobil 1 10W40 and a Napa 1410 filter 1106 hrs.

3 pointsRemoved the near mint original high back seat from my new to me 520 loader tractor and replaced it with a new one ( this ones gonna get used ) . Also added fluid filled ags and a set of new old stock era correct wheel weights to help with the terrible traction and weight distribution issues. Original low hour Dico tires and wheels will go in storage. Added roughly 250 lbs to the rear axle. Also added wheel studs and replaced / torqued the set screws on the hubs since I was there. Front tires are next.
