10 pointsWhile freshening up my RM-366 Gear Drive Deck for the new cutting season, I decided to do the @peter lena special - regreasing the 2 ball bearings in the PTO triple pulley. When I pulled the 6587 hitch shaft apart, I spotted 2 problems. The end of the pulley mount was short and angled, shown in the picture,when compared to the same part I fixed a while back for the 32" "Grease Comparison" deck I refurbushed last fall. This placed the inner edge of the triple pulley too close to the frame.. Also, the inner shoulder where the deck latch rides was severely worn. The solution was to make one repair sleeve out of 4140 that looks like a Top Hat. I had to get a little creative in the fixturing to cut down that deep. Machined both parts to give a .0015 press fit with red Loctite. Other end just required a 4140 sleeve. Cross drilled both ends for a grease port and fitting. Now the two former "womb-mates" ARE identical twins once more... Bill

8 pointsI believe it is two years since my thread on coating my deck with “Rust Bullit”. Again this year basically nothing caked on it. Just a light scraping with actually a screwdriver and a wire brush. Except for on some of deck’s edge where it scrapes on ground, coating is intact . No adhesion failure and no rust trough.

8 pointsPutting the RJ back together that I had a very tight turning transmission on. I took this to Florida in February and worked on it . Started assembling last year. I finally gave up on the two RJ ⚧️s I had for this rebuild and contacted Keith Jones in Ohio. I madd a wild deal with Keith to give him several boxes of RJ and Suburban transmission parts and a couple full transmissions for a replacement rebuild in trade. Keith also had His friend Larry “Ratpack” Eads assist him and analyze the problem. Larry suggested two new axle’s which he machined as the old ones were pretty worn. I had given Keith all new bearings, seals, brass bushings, gaskets and side plate gaskets for the rebuild. This transmission is an early 8 tooth brake gear not the later 11 . Keith and Larry worked on this thing over five Sundays getting all the old parts out, the new parts in and finding out what was causing the tightness in the axles Turing the gears. It turned out that one of the axle tubes on the inside of one of the side plates was slightly bent and needed to be straightened! I picked it up on Sunday April 3pth which was the date Keith and I set for pick up back in March. I can’t thank these two guys rnough as this transmission is the smoothest turning thing! Waiting for my wheel paint to dry before putting in my rear routes but racing to go ride this RJ. I built this for my brother David.

8 pointsI had one in the 80's and 90's but unfortunately it went by-bye-bye when we moved to Florida in 2000. Finally getting back here in 2017 I wanted another one but as you all know they are hard to find and folks who have them won't sell. I took a shot in the dark and ran a wanted ad on CL. I was amazed when I got a call a couple weeks later from a guy who had one he'd sell. Even more amazing was that he was only 15 miles from me. He said he had bought it at an auction and no longer needed it. I have a hunch that, after he got it, he figured it was nothing but scrap or more of a project that he wanted. Everything was rusted solid. After several weeks of e-tanking, penetrating oil, beating, banging and pleasant conversations I got it apart and was ready for reassembly. I didn't even try to save anything but the frame of the mid pulley assembly. The drive pin was totally shot which concerned me but @Lane Ranger save the day there. My 2018 Big Show find 854 is the dedicated tractor for it. For my needs it runs about 90% of the time like this as I trim the briars overhanging the paths out back.

6 pointsHaving to sell my 12ftx6ft twin axle, as the replacement for the Discovery is only rated for 2 ton, I had to get a replacement. This is a single axle 7ft x 4ft brakeless 3/4 ton. Fine for hauling a tractor but not so for hauling logs. Sides are not very high and loose logs could/would bounce out. So I've been making extensions. Some wood, steel mesh and a bit of spare time now and then, below is as far as I've got by today. Last week. Side frames finished and mesh attached. Need to wok out the tail gate. Top half needs to be QD. Also the sides need securing to the trailer sides.

6 pointsI don’t have anything to cut with mine, I have it because I am a Wheel Horse collector and it is a rare piece. I will say that occasionally when I see a wheat field or tall rye I think “Man, I’d like to cut that with my sickle bar!”

6 pointsNot the best pictures, but here’s mine. It took a little modification to make it work on my C-121 8 speed, also had a broken yoke in the wobble box when I got it. Welded it back together and it’s good to go.I just looked for the pictures and saw that it’s been parked there for over 3 years! Guess I better get it out, even though I have absolutely nothing to cut with it!

5 pointsOH YEAH!! dont you just LOVE to have access to a mill and lathe!! I some times are amazed at myself when I stop and think about that last .... part/gizmo/shaft/etc that I just knocked out in half hour or so, that other wise would have shut the - insert whatever here - down, totally. Love your set-up, bet that took a few head scratchings to rig that, and the end result .... well, thats a beauty! I often tell my buddies that it'll take 10-15 mins to make the ... whatever, but setting it up will take an hour or so.......

4 pointsI had a clapped out South Bend and a 'mill drill' and really didnt know much about useage of either ..... til I was fortunate enough to meet a .... genius? machinist that lived only a few miles from me and we became really good friends, and he taught me ..... all kinds of stuff!! Sadly this was late in life, especially for him - he was a HEAVY smoker, and after being my mentor for way too short of time - about 8-10 yrs, the smoking caught up with him at 63 yrs old, I miss that guy something awful. At least I came away with a souped up Bridgeport clone and a really nice 13x36 late model South Bend with most every tooling there is for them --- and thanks to Lane Sisson I can use them a to a fair degree Thank you Lane!

4 pointsI have an SMS-50 for a 953/1054 that I need some parts for to get it working. I need the rear mount where it attaches near the rear axle. Also need the pulleys and clutching mechanism for the belt. I may need other parts as well. If anyone knows where I can get the parts or has measurements to make them I'd appreciate it I'm getting a 953 to mount it on from @953 nut when he gets off his and digs it out for me

3 pointsHey gimme a break I look like snatchsquat... I had to have hair cuts like big brother Bob for all my life for my military and business careers... I just tell everyone I went to seed. Most guys I get static from are bald and can't grow a hair on their short stick. 'Sides... we ever get decent weather and for shows here I going Sargeant Carter... you can be Gomer Pyle Kev... NO... no mohawk ! Trouble is can't find anyone nowadays who knows how to to a flat top!

3 pointsYes indeed, and, I think I had most of them, but until I met Lane did I realize just how little I had ... learned? from them. Similar to turning a light on when walking into a dark room. A while back I was struggling with an oddball bushing and I pretty quickly thought "lemme call Lane and ask him" .... but, alas, that thought quickly passed, so I just had to figure it out with out him in person, but undoubtedly he was there in my 'brain' helping me.

3 pointsI got 5 or 6 years on this recycler deck and insert. I use Rustoleum bed liner spray. I have to touch up a spot or 2 every year but it seems to work well.

3 pointsYup - the proper tools make the difference! Folks don't realize the time and effort that goes into a safe, proper setup. Had to go to the top level to do the interrupted cuts on this one !! I took an Adult Machine Technologies (Machine Shop) course back in the 1980's. The class was taught by a retired Machine Shop Instructor - he was great. If you had a sketchy set-up prior to cutting a part, he would say " You MIGHT want to add a clamp on top in addition of the 2 Vee blocks to hold the part...". That was his NICE way of saying you need 2, 3 if you can fit them....BEFORE you cut. There was hell to pay if your set-up was insufficient to prevent chatter!!! I think of him every time I get one of these odd set-ups, he taught us well about the direction of cut, speeds & feeds, and most of all - the cutting forces introduced into the part and how to use them to improve the setup. This same philosophy I used in designing parts and drawings for machines - you can't paint the Machinist into a corner and not expect to hear grief!! I do miss the quality time we as a group we had with him. Bill

2 pointsMy design is just a crude copy of Matt's return to neutral setup. I used a sliding door roller for the bearing. I may have to find a different spring. The one in the video is a little stiff.

2 points@ri702bill very nice job on that ! the detailing and matching lubrication makes the difference . what was a chronic noisy / rough spot have been quiet and smooth . always thought that angular stress / heat was the killer of lubrication . once starting that , just regularly went after any trouble spot .keep it greasy , pete

2 pointsI have 1 or 2 really old axles... from maybe an L-156 tractor or something like that. They are straight across and some narrower than the coventional C series axle. I'll get some pics later....
