9 pointsProblem with buying a parts tractor is you end up fixing it up as well (ask me why I know). That is how the herd grows.

8 pointsBelt guard rattle on the 1977 B-80 … driving me NUTZ! Ended up being a missing bolt where I circled in blue. While I was there the shifter boot was swapped, shifter set screw “adjusted” and a general cleanup.

7 pointsFolks this is a NON tractor related event. We'd be glad to have you if you are so inclined... Gathering at our house in celebration of Trina's Momma's birthday as it was cancelled last December due to storms. LUAU!! June 3rd. From 11am till you leave. Food will be served starting at 12. Bring your favorite side dish. Rain or shine. Outdoor event, Barn if raining. BYOB and lawn chair. If you choose to enjoy an adult beverage... we have plenty of room for cots, campers and parking. Mods... This is a non-wheel horse event so I didn't figure I should put it in the standard calendar. Please do feel free to move it if you like. Eric n Trina... For Momma.

5 pointsGood point CCW. Someone is constantly nagging me about my collection of parts tractors and it's not the dog! Not to mention I have a outbuilding dedicated to storing parts that would make a dandy she shed...

5 pointsA non-running parts tractor that has been sitting outside and has a questionable past is a real crapshoot. Without firsthand knowledge of its condition and if it isn't close by so a road trip is called for I would value it at $ 50. If it close by I would go take a look for sure and aske the seller for a price before going any further. Bring along a good charged battery or jumper pack and see it the engine will turn over with compression. If it turns then check for spark and give it a shot of carburetor cleaner, Might fire, might not. Don't get it running before agreeing on a price or you have just become his free mechanic.

5 pointsThat blade does not look like it fits a long frame tractor. Looks like vertical crankshaft lawn tractor.

4 pointsLike the title says, a new creature found my home. For those who don't know, my wife is "Ellie May Clampett" at heart. Stray animals always find us, and she always feeds them. And they always stay! The sadder, more pitiful, and ugly, the more she likes them. ...Makes me rethink why she picked me! Anyway, now for four days we have another squatter. I've never seen a pheasant take up with people like this, but here he is. My wife named him "Rango", so I know he's here for as long as he wants...

4 pointsThat parts machine looks better than most of mine that I use today! If the price is right, I would pick it up for sure. Parts for a 50 year old machine will be harder to find as time goes on. You may also find the parts tractor is nice enough to fix on the side and have a "spare" Charger...

4 pointsRainy and nasty here today. Just to say I did something, I wire brushed and painted my front wheel weights to go on the repowered 310-8.

-
3 pointsYup, my thoughts were always the higher the better as the worst thing possible would be to survive and become a maimed vegetable eating through a straw. I enjoyed climbing but then got too old too fast so it was only about 5-6 years doing it but it wasn't full time. Highest for me was 600' on an 800' tower. We did communication antennas all over the Northeast. Mostly microwave point to point dishes then some cell antennas. The views were amazing and once we had an eagle flying around below us for a while.

3 pointsA stock 5060 or later is great for plowing. I wouldn't worry about parts too much ... they are out there. https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/shop-now/ is a good source. Really the only improvements are full length keyways on the axles with 2nd set screw. A-Z has some self locking hubs that are choice. Another upgrade might be to insure you have steel side plates on the diff. Pullers usually lock up the differential but you wouldn't want that for plowing or general use. Pull the transmission apart and see what it needs.
-
3 pointsDon't forget the ignition switch . You'll have to remove it to clean the lugs. If the problem still exists check the starter. With the switch off, connect a jumper cable to the big lug on the starter side of the solenoid then touch it to the plus post on the battery. The starter should instantly engage and spin the engine. Then move the jumper to the small terminal on the solenoid and make the same test. If the starter engages and spins the engine, the solenoid is good. If both starter and solenoid are good, order a new ignition switch.

3 pointsWhat any of these tractors left the factory as after 50 years is always debatable. So you have a nameplate and transmission that indicate a C81. And a re-decayed hood and engine that would be a C81. My moneys on the C81 nameplate. Don’t sell the 8speed 4 pinion 1” axle transmission short. I have a c81 and a 312-8 with 1” axles. The 312 mainly gets mowing duty. But the C81 had had its share of dirt dozing, grading and boat trailer pulling work. Not many spare WH parts in my area so I rebuild what I have if needed.
-
3 pointsCheck the short ground cable between the engine and the tractor frame. The shaker plate fatigues the wires in it.
-
3 pointsI once told my wife that I'd make my tractor collecting a trade off. She could get a new critter every time I got a tractor, and we'd split the barn right down the middle. By the time I blinked twice she had 8 goats, a donkey, 4 dogs and 3 cats. I got a corner in the barn, and feeding the critters cost way more than tractoring. I still don't know how it happened!

3 pointsI like squirrels. I like rabbits and deer more though. I love all animals. There’s room for most all of ‘em on the smoker!

2 pointsGentleman, I’m looking for advice/past experiences here as I’ve come across a non-running, unsure of year, Charger 12 for sale. I have a ‘69 Charger 12. Judging by the photos, it is in rough shape and is parked outdoors on a farm. The tractor comes with a snow plow and it features the hydraulic lift which my Charger 12 does not have. I’m interested in buying it because I feel like having access to its parts could be of future value for my Charger 12, but would still like to hear from you all if buying a “spare” tractor for solely it’s parts is actually worth it in the long run. What would you do if the price was “right”? Pictures:

2 pointsHello everyone... I'm new to the square and this would be my first post!! I have two 1972 Raider 14's that have 6 speed 1 1/8 axle 10 pinion LS transmissions. One of them I purchased from the original owner and in pretty good shape for sitting a few years. The second is in rough shape and need lots of TLC in the transmission department. Looking for parts to rebuild and not seeing much out there for pinion replacements, gears, axles (new aftermarket). The plan is to beef it up for serious plowing. Must be venders out there that the pullers are using? Thought I would take a short cut and pick everyone's brain for info. Thanks

2 pointsA year or so ago I purchased a GT 14. Some previous owner removed the model & s/n tag to paint it and failed to put it back on. It still has the original hood decals on it and it does not have the first year decals on it so it is a 1970 model or above, I think. It does have the high back seat with 2 cushions on it which I think were used on 1970 & up models. Anyway, I bought an owners manual and a parts manual on eBay. I just notices the owners manual has model 1-7441 on it with a picture of the low seat back version and the parts manual I have says it is for models 1-1-7452 & 1-7453 along with a pic of a tractor with the high back seat like mine. Does this mean there are at least 3 different versions of the GT 14 and that mine is the later p/n 1-7452 or 7453 and 1 more question, what is the difference in the 2 later models so that I may establish which model I have? Please excuse my ignorance concerning this issue.

2 pointsI guess I'm fortunate that snakes are not loved at all by my wife. And it's good because we have a few big black snakes here too. She wants one of those mini cows, the little $10,000 ones. Not until I get something with a bucket loader and backhoe attachment! We already have cows next door. They come right up to our yard, so that's enough for now.

2 pointsWE HAVE FROG'S EGGS!!!!! There are 3 masses in the pond. We'll have tadpoles wiggling all over the place in a couple months. We also have a few little ferns growing in and out of the greenhouse. Here's my row of peas. And a bonus daffodil from up by the house.

2 pointsSo much of my junk would agree. Every tractor I have was "swamp fresh", and a shot of paint definitely brings them out!

2 points@Crazy8I believe what you have there is a C-81 that someone repowered with a 12hp. If that were a C-121 it would have headlights, also (not that it matters) the hood decals are on backwards. Still a nice looking tractor! Good luck with it! As @ebinmaine knows the 78-79 C-series are some of my favorite tractors.

2 pointsIf your tractor you have is performing well and you have a smaller suburban yard, then maybe not. But if you found a good running tractor with bad sheet metal, or especially one of those horrid plastic seat pans, that tractor looks to have straight sheet metal. It looks like the drive clutch for the mower is missing. that sheet metal looks pretty straight and the paint looks like it would respond to the oil patina finish method. If he is asking 200 he probably will take 150.00. You could create empathy from the buyer by stating that you need a second operating mower and the missing parts like the drive clutch are not cheap to come by. for example, one of my workers smoked a bearing on the mower drive clutch and I had a non runner with a good unit. Ten minutes later I was back in business.Yours does not have the drive clutch, so he might take off fifty bucks. In any case, the value of the tractor needs to at least cover you breaking it down and parting out. I have no idea how the market is heading. Just buying groceries and paying the important must haves is where the inflation seems to be the worst. So there is a much higher percentage of paycheck to paycheck people who are not buying projects. I look at things like this against how much money is spent on lifestyle stuff like eating at restaurants vs cooking steaks on the grill. Grill works every time and hamburger usually wins over steak. Even the grill was free as my fancy sister wanted a stainless one and the old painted Weber just keeps choochin'
-
2 pointsPart of the equation of purchasing it is do you have room for storing it. I personally do not and do not want more stuff in the yard that needs disposing of in the future.
-
2 pointsThe are natural bug and worm eaters. Try adding some mealworm bird food and watch them devour it. After they are a couple months old they will get enough bugs and worms outside to make them happy. Lets keep it clean here, this is a family friendly site!

2 points6 speed, 10 pinion transmissions were used from 1967 to 72 or 73. Parts are available as good used but I haven't seen a new replacement for pinions or axles. Hubs can be sourced from Lincoln at A to Z Tractor in PA. What's the exact issue with your own transmission? To set up for plowing you'll obviously need great traction. Fluid filled tires, plenty of steel weight. You'll be fine. BTW we really like pics of old tractors around here.....
-
2 pointsI’m gonna guess they went with an FEL at some point. They would be to hold the towers, lift arms & bucket when that assembly was being removed from the tractor.
-
2 pointsI like parts tractors and can't remember one I've lost my investment on. I'd be curious as to why it was parked but the dozer blade and hydro lift could be worth the $200 and there's likely enough other salvageable parts to make it worth your while. Looks like an original Nelson muffler, a decent belt guard, and you'll have some engine parts as well. Coil, starter, voltage regulator, throttle and choke cables, etc...

2 pointsSounds like a sticky solenoid or a dirty/ loose connection somewhere around it.
-
2 pointsI had a similar problem with the C81 - turned out to be the starter itself - had a cracked magnet - may (must?) have been dropped by the previous owner... Starter innards were good - switched housings, good to go...

2 pointsBest advice I got from a buddy was this story; Boy comes around to take Dad's daughter out for a first date. Dad says "son lets take a ride in my truck". Now this truck is a brand new, fully loaded, awesome bit of truckness...The boy heads to the passenger side and Dad says...."no, you drive". So the terrified boy gets behind the wheel and very carefully takes the truck out on the road. After a short drive with the boy being super careful with the truck, they pull back into the driveway. Dad says to the nervous wreck of a boy...."now you were REAL careful with this new truck 'cus you knew how much it meant to me right?" The boy frantically shakes his head yes. "Well", continues the Dad, "that daughter of mine means a WHOLE LOT MORE to me than this truck. So you just keep that in mind."
