6 pointsToday I've been marshalling on the above rally at Carlisle airport. The weather turned out nice for a change. The entrants came from various countries in Europe, there was even some from the US, paying £6,000 for the privilege for the three day event. Cars are all pre WWII. Here are a few photo's for you. Enjoy. This Dutch couple had a bit of a problem.

6 pointsFired up the old girl and did a little yard work, now that most of the snow has finally gone. She's well used but still runs and works great.

6 pointsFinished up a set of steps and handrails for my good friend Mike to replace the old crumbling concrete steps at his lake house. Felt good to have a MIG gun in my hand again instead of a wrench.

6 pointsI've mowed with the refurbished deck a couple times now so I pulled it off and gave the bottom a good drill driven wire brushin'. Then I soaked it good with chain and cable lube and sun bath per @peter lena recommendation.

5 pointsI know this started as an engine replacement, but since the 310-8 has been a favorite and a dependable machine all these years- she's getting a few more upgrades... Upgraded the 4-pinion tranny to the 8-pinion heavy transmission. New seals, boot, and paint. Added spacers (only one inch, so the deck fits without issues) mainly so it'll have studs. Broke my dang fuel tank grommet. One more thing to fix... Decided to use the "other brand" heavy front axle. I'm out of 520 front ends, so at least I get 1 inch knuckles up front as well. Front and rear track is now 38 inches wide. Giving the wheels fresh paint too, just for the halibut... Got a few little things to finish up, but it should be ready in a day or two.

4 pointsDid some more work on the cart today, and finally got to use the Titanium running solid wire. I changed the machine over from flux core to solid wire a couple weeks ago for a coworker of mine to do some exhaust work on his pickup, but this was the first time I ran it since. Running .030 wire from my local welding supply with a 75/25 Argon/CO2 mix shielding gas. Very happy with how the machine welds and very happy with how the cart is coming along as well.

4 pointsBeen off this project for a bit while I was dong an engine rebuild on a farm tractor. With that off my plate it's time to get back on track. The only thing that I had not sand blasted yet was the frame / rear fender assembly. It was a nice 80+ degree day today so what would be better than to put on a coat, gloves, and a hood on. Then go stand in the sun to do some sand blasting. Sweated my way through it but forgot to take a picture, sorry. Some body work left to do on the fenders before it's ready for paint. After I was done blasting I was able to make some paint fly on the rims.

3 pointsSome interior pictures of the JD with the Original Cab Co soft cab with hard top. After the first Winter with it I am 100% pleased with it. Nice to be out of the wind, snow and water dropping on top of me while plowing. I would have preferred the green top but those are only offered on the smaller series JD tractors. The black vinyl is nice as is the top in Winter for the added heat that comes from it. This past week doing cleanup and trail work I popped off both doors for a nice cross breeze. Also added the Therma- Seat heated seat for more comfort.

3 pointsWell its been 4 months since updating this thread and after this past Winter I can say this one topped them all in the 15 years we've been here as far a branches and trees down. Came across this large Hemlock along side the Brook this morning. Took some pictures and then did an about face to get back on the trail whence I came. Will handle that Hemlock another time.

3 pointsPretty amazing models! Some folks are really talented. We visited some friends and they drove us north of Des Moines about 1 1/2 hours to Gladbrook, Iowa. There is a fellow in this small town who makes amazing structures out of match sticks. The United States Capital building was made using 478,000 match sticks, 10 gallons of carpenters glue and more than 2,000 hours of labor. All of the data used to draw plans to construct this building was gathered from the internet. The model is 12 feet long and 5.5 feet tall. We worked out of his basement. His work in displayed in a museum/art gallery in Gladbrook. If I remember, we paid five dollars entrance fee. I believe he has been hired by Ripley's Believe It or Not for some contract work. Sometimes he glues match sticks together to form a sheet similar to single layer plywood.

3 pointsNo sir. No need. My tractors are built HEAVY so I get traction. Also worth considering is that a locked rear does NOT want to turn. I've had great concerns about breaking an axle so I leave all our machines as either Open Diff 8 speeds or Limited Slip Differential 6 speeds. 8 pinions I've seen. 10 I haven't. IMHO it's pointless to weld or lock a 10 pinion because it's already a Limited Slip Differential. Locking up a 10 pinion could lead to easier damage than an 8 pinion because the pinions are smaller and the end plates are not as strong.

3 pointsIt's been a debacle of a weekend, but the 310-8 is now a 314-8. Might be time to change out the light duty 8-speed for an 8-pinion... As I said before, I have three of these engines. One of them I'd never heard run or seen inside it, but it was the newest of the three. Since I "knew" none had more than 150 hours, I installed the one that seemed newest. Big mistake! Some dummy set the govenor backwards when I installed it, which would have been surprising enough. But no, it also has a stuck valve. It sounded like a runaway diesel when I cranked it, and I shut it down in less than a few seconds. So that engine came back off and went back on the shelf. I'll dig into it later, as I have plenty of spare parts. It'll get fixed soon. So I changed the engine AGAIN. This time she purrs like a kitten. The mufflers I picked up years ago are kinda chubby, but they have a nice gurgly tone and are pretty quiet. I had forgotten just how smooth these Vanguards can be. So it was nearly dark when I took it for a spin. But my LEDs had no trouble lighting up my path. Even with the lights burning, the charging system pushes 16vdc. Then I used plastic spiral wrap to tidy up the wiring and put her to bed. Now I gotta swap the spindles on the deck and she's ready to work!

3 pointsI should've taken pictures before mounting it. It's just two heavy 1 inch pieces of angle and a 1/4 inch flat drilled to accept both the frame holes and the engine. The footprint of the Vanguard is much smaller than a Kohler or Onan. I raised the Vanguard only an inch. It just places the PTO shaft at the correct height.

2 pointsI put this 16HP K Series in my GT 1848 and it has the deep air filter cover that comes in contact with the headlights in the hood. Does someone have a picture or can tell me what type of air cleaner is used in this style of tractor with a K series engine?? Like a 416. Or do they use the shallow style air filter like on a 10,12,14 HP tractor?? That doesn't sound like it would be right, but I don't know. Thanks!!!

2 pointsThe rear decal appears to be correct and I can spot a repaint pretty easily so either someone replaced all the decals and serial number plate and all fasteners that perhaps the hood has been repainted or replaced. Might have been the notorious paint burn off from the muffler location that most have.

2 pointsSo I decided to start tinkering with my C-160… I thought I would wash her up by hand to get some of the grime off of the old girl. Well naturally I had to start removing parts so I could reach more crooks and crannies. I got the hood off and the rear fender/ seat pan. I already knew I needed a shifter boot. Question… Is the belt guard for the drive belt supposed to be mounted like this ? It looks like the PTO linkage bracket needs to come off. Anybody know a shortcut or easier way ?

2 pointsThey do allow us to putt around..no high speed stuff or wheelies etc. Occasionally someone complains about us driving up/down the vendor aisles (I always take it slow and keep the RPMs low) but everywhere else is good to go.

2 pointsWorked on all 3 of my Horses. The 1075 got an oil change. The 875 was losing spark intermittently. Wound up being the wire that goes from the points to the coil. The terminal end was broken off. After that adjusted the carb a little, back to running great. The 856 got a boiled linseed oil rub down and I monkeyed with the seat a little. Seat cover is all tore up and the padding is gone so I added a little pad under the cover. Will do till I find a new seat. I also would like to rebuild this fuel pump off the 1075. Has the primer lever on it. Having trouble finding a kit for it. Anyone have a link for one? Hate to put a plastic pump on it. This one leaks a little.

2 pointsWell, I got the engines swapped today. I hate to pull the Magnum, but it's gonna need some work. Yesterday I made a new engine mount adapter for the Vanguard so it bolts right into the factory frame mount holes. So the Vanguard is now mounted up (after a bath). I'll take care of the electrical connections tomorrow. The ignition type is the same, so it's pretty simple. I had ordered a new seat for it, but they shipped a completely different one, so I have to send it back.
