..well I did have a 418 years ago but it wasnt here long. Been casually on the hunt for a 414 or 416-8 speed with a single Magnum for awhile. Never anything for sale that’s not a 5 plus hour drive one way. Well I know of a guy in the next town over with a couple and this morning I bumped into him at the local gas station. Said if you ever want to unload one let me know. Long story short he put a price on each one and said take your pick. I chose this 1989 414-8 and brought her home! Runs great, tranny goes thru all the gears, 42” SD deck is quiet. Obligatory pics :

I did something else today too. Since my 310-8 got upgraded to the 314-8, I decided to give it a heavier transmission while I'm upgrading. I have a couple spare 8-speeds, and the input shaft has been leaking on the original tranny for a while anyway. So I cleaned up one of my spares today. The gear oil was nasty, but had no water in it. I changed the axle seals as well. The hubs weren't horribly stuck, but it took a while to remove them. The hitch pin was a royal pain, but it finally came out. Only thing I didn't have was an input shaft seal. And it's gonna need one for this tranny as well. Degreased the whole thing and primed it, then sprayed two coats of Rust-Oleum regal red on it. The case had some pitting on it, so it doesn't have a smooth finish, but it's good enough for a worker. I'll chase the hub threads tomorrow and get her ready to swap into the 314-8.

Like the title says. These two have been in my life since early 80’s.

Hitched up my 633 for a little clean up duty. I have to look into why it starts hard when it's cold, but other than that I'm really getting to like this little tractor.

Eric is correct about no syncs. Sometimes a loose or sloppy shifter can cause this. Loosen the lock nut at base of shifter and tighten the Allen Head set screw. Snug the screw and then back out a touch, then retighten the lock nut. If the sloppy shifter is not your issue, try the double clutch method and/or rock the tractor a little.

Little man drove the 314-8 around today. I gotta get him some pedal extensions! The new engine is so smooth and quiet! Upgrading the transmission next to a 8-pinion.

Caught a few trout this morning. Was mowing the fence lines this evening when the corporate farmer showed up with his 16 row corn planter.

Started to go through the 414 this evening. How refreshing to get a tractor that has actually been maintained! Interstate battery is only a couple months old. Trans fluid is full and clean like it’s brand new. Motor oil is full and just as clean as the transmission fluid. Air filter is like brand new. Shifter boot looks brand new…,and it goes on! Swapped out the rear wheels/tires to some nicer ones I had in stock. Checked all 4 hub set screws and NOT ONE WAS LOOSE?? Ok.. I did have to tighten up the rear brake band a bit .

    Actually I had a 416-H as well…. So I guess it’s far from my first 400 series

Looking awful righteous ther Newbie... you got @Pullstart @Achto and my stamp of approval... Ya know I would have never thought of Red on one of my scoots... same with trucks... then a affliction came upon me. I could see a FLHTK in Candy Apple with flames Dan??? NO ... we ain't going ther...OK... how about a '73 FXE... NO... back in black...

Either one would be fine. Would be cool to see the newly done 160. They don’t approve of tractors with mowing decks, and I know you don’t run a deck so that won’t be an issue. Not sure which I’ll bring, sometimes it’s decided by which one’s start the night before

I hope you haven't been trying to shift 2-3 or back while moving. There are no syncros and that will wear out the 2-3 gear....

I can hear Jim Croce singing in the background..... "You don't tug on Superman's cape, You don't spit into the wind, You don't ride your tractor in sandals, and you don't mess around with Slim....."

Usual Thursday been over the Border to my mate Dunc's place. I never really know what we will be doing. Could be working in the workshop on one of his Land Rovers or farm tractors or maybe some landscaping. There's also the logging. Today we were splitting logs. Dunc was operating the tractor mounted log splitter and I was keeping him supplied with logs. I reckon we got over 5 ton split and put away in around 5 hours work. Tomorrow I will spend the day recovering. I really must stop listening to my head thinking I'm still 19 and take more notice of my body telling me I'm not.

Looks like new, all it needs is a set of Terry's "Patriot" decals. Then all the kids will adore it.

Nice looking tractor. I have a 414-8 as my first Wheel Horse so that is what I will use as my bench mark. I really like mine and use it for all kinds of things around here.

Yes, lubricate the bushing....I tend to use vasoline on rubber parts. I have also found it is much easier if I just start the barbed fitting in the grommet in the flange only to the first barb, then insert the grommet fully into the tank. Then push the barbed fitting in to expand and seal the grommet to the tank.

Got a few more trinkets installed this evening. I cleaned out the holes in the ends of the hood supports and found washers with hairpins to use there. This tractor hasn't had those there since the last build because the holes were stuffed with ... Stuffff. Dash faceplate assembled with cables and switches. Frame side lights in. S/G belt on. Holding clip for the fuel line on.

Instead of waiting until the weekend I decided to spend a few hours after work the last couple of days to finish my 656 project up. Engine purrs like a kitten at idle, roars like a lion at full speed. Always love the feeling I get when I start up an engine that I have rebuilt. Put about 3/10's on the hour meter doing heat cycles & driving around a little bit. She will be back in the field by tomorrow doing some work with a lite disc harrow. Feels good to have this off my plate, now maybe I can get some work done on my stuff.

Grinding sounds = bad bearings or brushes. Weak starting capabilities = bad brushes, damaged commutator, or weak brush springs Won't spin at all = bad brushes, bad commutator, damages windings. Won't charge = bad regulator. Other issues can arise. What is your S/G doing?

Working on the tommy gun, and the ma deuce before that really brought to my attention how much the engineering principles of dependability and simplicity have played a role in the growth and success of our nation, whether it be a dependable machine designed by the Ponds in farms and fields, or a firearm on the battle lines of WW2. No frills, easy to build and maintain, and rock solid reliability allowed us to grow and succeed in so many areas. Couple that with the hands that operated and maintained these systems it's no wonder.

Progress continues! Still have to redo the sling attachments and work on the magazine catch. I also had to add some adhesive to the pistol grip and fore grip to solid them up.Attachment with just bolt didn't feel secure enough to me.
