9 pointsSo I got into tractors about a few years ago and started with my 1276 then slowly built up well now I just picked up 2 tractors and 1 that came with it for free , a 1969 Charger 12 , 1968 Charger 9 they both run and the one I’m about to show you might not think runs but I swear it does some how it’s a Raider 10 from 1968 I think twin sticks

8 pointsTranny issues are over. A Special Thanks to @jeremi3210 for hooking me up with a good right hand case. I took a little drive up to his place last week to grab my much needed part. Was great to do some catching up with him. After some degreasing and a trip through the blast cabinet both halves received a couple of coats of self etching prime to keep rust at bay until I am ready to paint. This week I purchased a new addition to my tool arsenal. A bearing and seal driver kit with a very wide range of sizes. Got to try out my new toys this morning by installing all new bearing into the cases. Bearings in, time to stack some gears. All went pretty smooth other than dropping the detent ball down the hole 3 or 4 times. Finally was able to get enough sticky grease on the spring and my push rod tool to get it in place. All the bearings & gears got drizzled with some Lucas oil treatment (my favorite assembly lube) before the left hand case was installed. Buttoned up & ready for paint. The donor tranny also got put back together, mostly. I put the detent hard ware in a bag & stuffed it inside the tranny. The entire inside was soaked down with some white lithium lube to preserve it. Labeled for storage.

5 pointsAnother interesting thing today I did run a 702 Wheel Horse with Wheel Horse dump cart in the big parade today behind and in front of some big tractors! Gary Burrell with our group was also in the parade riding Rodney Burgers 854 with dual rear wheels and hydro lift! When we were lining up I saw a big blue tricycle that I wanted to see up close. Turns out it was made five years ago and look what was being used to manage speed - a three speed Wheel Horse transmission with brake band used too!

4 pointsI think the 1st question to ask is how long have you had this horse and if you have had it for a year or so, did the Limited Slip work before ??? Also, when you put the rear end on blocks and turn one of the wheels (while in neutral), you have to turn the wheel slowly to check the differential. Your trans works like a regular trans if the horse is turning left or right. The Limited Slip only works when the horse is going in a straight line. If, while turning either of the wheels you hear chunking or feel like something is jammed, it is maybe a broken spring or bad pinions and you must open the transmission. Take good pictures and show us in this thread, we can walk you through this.

4 pointsAlso the 5060 brake band metal is thicker and pulls from the bottom whereas the 5073 has thinner metal and pulls from the top. I use the dipstick as an identifier because it is so conspicuous.

4 pointsYou can tell brake drum easy enough, if there is a large gap or small gap between the brake drum and the left axle housing. There is a noticeable difference in the two IPL images too

4 pointsMy c-160 input belt idler pully is in good shape but the bearing is dry; smooth but dry. As you can see I tried drilling out the spot welds but the halves are fused I guess by induction welding as another has stated. I took a large syringe from the local farm supply and took the sharp tip off of the needle. I found that the seal on the side of the bearing is just thin rubber. I really did a number on that seal with the 1/16" dia needle. It's about half gone. I should have left the sharp point on the needle to make a small hole in the seal. Any way I was able to fill the bearing with Lucas Red that I has loaded. I'm thinking that it'll probably stay fairly clean and not loose the grease very fast considering that it's behind the sheet metal. It beats buying a new one and will probably last as long as I need it to. It spins smoothly now without the dry bearing noise. .

4 pointsYou should have a 5073 transaxle if it wasn't swapped out by someone. The spring that makes the differential a limited slip can get a bit weak over time or slip to one side where it isn't making any significant contact with the pinions on one side. Time to take it apart and take a look at what is going on. Lowell @wheelhorseman can fix you up with the spring https://wheelhorsepartsandmore.com/product/7235-spring/ as well as the seals, gasket and other stuff you'll need. @stevasaurus has some great threads on transmission repairs.

3 pointsHi Clarence, I suspect they are not the same. To positively confirm this, you will need the model numbers of both tractors to determine if the part numbers are the same. Many factors can determine the design of the belt guards. Wheel base length, Type of transmission,hydro,3 speed, 6 speed, 8 speed, etc.

3 pointsThese pics from my rebuild of a 'D' series may help. The 'D' series has the hyd PUMP mounted and liked to the Engine. The hyd MOTOR is bolted to the left side of the transaxle. There is a 4-line steel MANIFOLD connecting the Pump to the MOTOR to facilitate fluid flow (180). These pics are the MOTOR... It is CRITICAL that the motor housing (cap) be mounted as in pic # 1(157). NOTE the position of the acceleration fwd/rev valves...be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN to reinstall EXACTLY in same position as when removed (1-12). Use a MAGNETIC pick-up tool to remove the valve (1-7). Once you have the valves in hand, use compressed air to clear any debris from internals (1-16). Finally.. be sure to completely flush away any dirt/debris BEFORE reassembly.

3 pointsI do not use any of these. That said generally you get what you pay for. I always opt for a quality tool over saving a few dollars. Have a Rockwell drill from forty years ago that is still going strong. Also I have stopped buying battery tools for when the battery dies they are useless. Cords are annoying but they keep on working for years. My

3 pointsJack the rear wheels up. Spin one side by hand. If the opposite wheel spins the opposite direction, you have a newer 8-pinion differential. If the opposite wheel spins the same direction, you have the original limited slip tranny.

3 pointsPresuming we have determined it was a limited slip transaxle with 1 1/8" axles here is a quick way to figure it out. If your transaxle has a dipstick to check the oil it would be the 5073, If the oil level is checked by removing the fill cap located low on the left rear it is a 5060. The brake drum location is different too but not as easy to spot from the outside.

3 pointsFriday February 24, 2023 , Day Three at the Florida Flywheelers! The heat was on today! I bough a big straw hat! The. Vehicles running around the show grounds do stir up a lot of the black fine dust Florida is know for. I took two photos of the rental golf cart storage areas. The Cushman Club has its own building and a fabulous display of everything Cushman. Rodney Burger, Vernon Perry, Lowell and Joette Scholljegerdes have been with me the last three days! Gary Burrell joined us today and will be with us tomorrow. Saturday is the final day of the Florida Flywheelers Show.

2 pointsYour transmission does use SAE 80-90 or any gear oil that is in that range. Any local auto parts store or Walmart or Tractor Supply will have gear oil.

2 pointsNah - but it looks like the 2 at the top had a litter of puppies !!! You do realize the long main jet needles are different between the small 8 HP carbs and the larger 10+ models?? And that all the needles are hollow with teensy-tiny air bleed holes at both ends...?? Be sure they are open.... Looks like a couple of shiny new bowls there too...

2 pointsThe FWD / REV acceleration valves are on the Hyd MOTOR section...one on front..one on back. Pull the left wheel and you'll see them. The valve PLUG is shown here...the BIG Hex plug is on top... but this is a side view of the hyd motor.
