Hello Wheel Horse Folks! I'm the newest guy here, I just registered with props going out to member @Achto or Dan for making that recommendation regarding something I'm looking for from a member here that I can't get in touch with elsewhere. Don't get the wrong idea I'm not here just to get in touch with that certain member and abandon the group, I love all tractors including the Wheel Horses AND I am on multiple other tractor forums. I actually to be honest looked on here a couple times before joining, and was hesitant at first because I do not have Wheel horse.......yet even though I lost out on a free one before. Anyways, I hope to get one someday though and obviously when I do I will let y'all know. That said since I have no Wheel Horse at this time I may not be on here that much, as of right now. Anyway here is a little about me....... My name is Eric, I'm from Berlin Connecticut, I am 22 years old but I have been into tractors for as long as I can remember thanks to my grandparents on my fathers side. If I remember right I would say since I was 5 maybe 6 years old. I used to go from window to window and watch my grandfather mow the lawn, then my grandfather would push me on the tractor around the yard without starting the engine when I got older from what they tell me. That said you could say tractors are in my blood, I love em all and tractor pulling as well. I am also into classic cars, but especially Mopars (Dodges/Plymouths/Chryslers)..... not those p.o.s. imports like most people in my age group. I am the proud owner of 2 1967 Sears Craftsman Power Unit lawn tractors. Both with electric start and headlights, but one is a 6 horsepower model 855C and the other is a 10 horsepower 857C. The 855C I bought 2 years ago in 2021 from a member on another tractor forum that I am currently restoring, and the 857C I bought 3 years ago in 2020 from the town where my mothers father lives. My stepdad is also into tractors like me, and he also has a 1967 Craftsman like mine but a model 856C with a recoil or pull start and no headlights that his grandfather bought brand new. That tractor sat in the backyard for 30 years until 2018 when it was restored. My stepdad also has a red 1992 Murray too. Thank Y'all for lettin' me join, I'm lookin forward to gettin' to know new members. Here are all our tractors below, and if you are from New England and have been to the Zagray Farm spring show you probably seen them before........

@Brockport Bill Now that I have the C-81 up and running I’m going to drive it onto the table so I can stand up and work on it. Lots more to do! The table I purchased from Harbor Freight and widened the top with two sheets of 3/4” plywood. Of course I had to get a large decal from Terry! I waited until it went on sale, I think it was around $500 bucks. Honestly one of my better purchases as I have a bad back. I would definitely recommend getting one, as it makes working on them much easier.

Sounds like you have a great history with machinery. Please do hang around, and often. EXCELLENT bunch of folks around here. Looking like my Other Half and I will be headed down to Zagray spring show so hopefully we'll see you there.

It all started 6 weeks ago. Was plowing and seeing hydraulic fluid on the ground oh no what happened. The d200 was pushing snow like mad then all of a sudden I see a trail of hydraulic fluid as I'm backing up oh no back to the garage. Found the case on the run was broken open from the inside low and behold. A boat that loose inside and got caught around the bull gear and the housing lost got it apart did I mention it's a 1977 so it's been together for a long time got the hubs off broke one had to order a new used hub got it apart needed a set of needle bearings in one side ordered gasket put it back together and it leaked not in the same spot on one of the gaskets that had never been taken apart take it apart put gasket sealer on and we're all better. The weld is holding up great. Decided to make a 2-in receiver because I used the ball hitch to put my weights on before and everybody told me bad move so after doing a little research and figuring I made my own now we have the weights on there securely all said and done thanks to the members and transmission forum for all the help and shining light on what was wrong with the inside yes of course a boat broken side grade 5 should have been grade 8 now updated these are a few pictures of my fun time

December 13 or so, I was finishing the install of this stove. I built a bin (safely spaced) next to it and installed a chute to run the pellets from outside to the basement. So long as it’s fire pot is cleaned once in a while, and it’s left on LOW, it burns very well for our fairly open basement space. I’d say I’ve gone through more than 3/4 of the pellet hopper that holds almost exactly one ton. It’s been a great SUPPLEMENTAL heat source! Our furnace (heated mostly by the outdoor wood boiler) hasn’t run near as much and the house is still quite comfortable. I’d very much recommend one if you’ve ever thought about it, or are on the fence about one!

once you get a and realize how well made and easy to work on they are, you'll wonder why you didn't get one sooner. Then the addiction begins

If you have frozen ground or packed snow/ice underneath then narrow tires with 2 link chains and weights are a great solution.

The Carlisle versa turf tires are the best I have experienced for plowing. They are a radial tire so they have some squat and flex to help grab and bite

Thank you for the welcome Dan, and I am too. I feel part of the family already.

Thank you (and everyone else) for welcoming me. That's great to hear you and your other half are coming to Zagray in May, I plan to be there on Sunday and Sunday only like I normally am. Unless I find and buy a Wheel Horse before the show, all the tractors in my first photo will be there.

@c-series don would not use any sandpaper on the finish , at first , just the lubricant soak to feed the paint , let it sit a day or 2 , see how it reacts to a drying wipe down. if its taken on a deeper color ,and wipes into a dull shene that will come back , with another soak down , and rub out . after that second oil soak , rub out . I use 6" ELECTRIC PALM BUFFER , with a cleaner wax . that flat hood would be a good test bed for results . pete

Seems like it. It will get another brace across the rear under the 3 speed transmission. The hydraulic cylinder for the steering will somehow mount off one of the lower tubes, not sure which side. I hope to get the gaskets and new seal installed soon in the Eaton and the try to fire it up. Once I know it will move, I’ll get the steering figured out. It’s getting trailer hubs in front and I’ll have to revamp the spindles for a cylinder tab.

I usually use a lead hammer and just tap the crank out after the bearing plate is off. . The bearing may come out with the crank. If it doesn't I tap the inner race of the bearing with a brass drift and same lead hammer. Work around the race so it comes out straight.

Your in the right neighborhood for horses. Just look out for some of your CT neighbors... heard tell some are a might shady... ... There is a section here, other brands, so feel free to put up some . BTW Kev that thing on top of a mold board plow is NOT a carry handle...
  28. 4 points
Yes you can use them for mowing. "Normal" use is no problem. Where you have issues is when the ground is wet and soft. When you spin a tire, you instantly have a hole to fix. You just have to be careful. Several of mine run ags year round. But mine never see snow duty. Never used a set of chains...

I remember from a post of yours a while ago you knew where a 420 LSE was for sale but you were afraid of the Mrs. killing you.... Now I see that beauty on your lift table.... Is that the one?

@Retired Wrencher As soon as I have it turn key and cosmetically fixed up I’m going to have him over to take it for a ride! Probably just a good rub down to save the patina, maybe paint the wheels as they aren’t in the best shape. I will still see him as we are both involved in the continued preservation of our local one room school house.

The John Deere 318 has been called the best garden tractor made. That is a claim that does have it's merits, but it is of course objective. When Deere made it's predecessor, the 317, Deere chose (like many manufacturer's the Kohler KT17 to power it. When a lot of those engines began to have premature oil failures, Deere made an Onan repower kit to put into customer's 317s. When Deere brought our the 317 successor, it had to be good. Therefore the 318 had to be good. 18 hp Onan engine, dual hydraulics, bullet proof transmission, turning brakes, etc. The 318 was what the doctor ordered. The 318 was also brought out with the 16 hp Onan 316, basically a stripped down version of the 318, much as the 314 was to the 317. In 1986, Deere brought out the 316 diesel version, the 330 which was, more or less Deere testing the waters. In 1987 Deere replaced the 330 with the 318 diesel version, the 332, and also added the 3 cylinder Yanmar gas 322. The 316 received a 18 hp Onan. The complete line, along with the 420 and 430, stayed in the Deere lineup through 1992 when all got replaced by the 3X5 and 4X5 tractors. I had both the 316 and a 318, plus a 430. They were one of the strongest, most robust tractors built during that era, by any brand.

The 418-A is a great tractor and the 312-8 may be even better depending on the tasks you will be using it for. The fuel used for mowing and other tasks will be considerably less than the 418-A but you will be changing gears as needed and the lift is manual rather than hydraulic.

Many thanks to all. Starts cold without smoke. She runs and drives great. I got it home and it would not start. Bad ground and PTO safety was the second culprit. I will rewire otherwise It will be my dedicated dump trailer hauler. I love it like it is. Thanks again!

Trying something different this year, I usually stay at a hotel, but the In-laws want to check out this show this year too so we are staying in their camper at Pine Ridge Campground just down the road. Should be fun!

My brother bought a well used JD317 (KT17 series 1) many years ago (1984/5?). He used it for 10 years or so but the engine developed a bad leak on the crank seals (well over 2000 hours but hour meter had died...). He bought a replacement KT17 from Northern tool and it is still running today..hydro is noisy but works fine. The original engine sat in the attic of his barn for another 10 years or so until I retrieved it to repower a C-175 I got that had a ventilated block. Replaced the crank seals swapped out some external parts and it is still running. Does smoke for a few minutes on start up. Runs the sweepster...

If you do buy a new Asian carb, be aware the choke levers are often backwards.
  46. 3 points
Carb kits are available all over the jungle or fleabay. Just search on Kohler carb. Stay away from the cheap knockoffs as the inlet parts do not often fit. They are OK if you just need the bowl gaskets but for a full rebuild get one that says Kohler on it. See if we can get you a magnum manual the valve adjustments will be there along with other good stuff.

Nope!! AG's are OK for the summer - tried once to plow with them - they were wide and just rode up on top of the snow - no grip. Winter I use turf tires with 2 link chains - and weight - a lot of weight.

This evening we took a look at options for white lighting. I'll have a 17 watt 6-in-a-row oblong LED light out back. The front headlamp hole will be creatively filled with a newer style Wheelhorse lense with flat LEDs behind it in a sandwich. Because I want lamps facing off to the side angle at the front I've put these 4" diameter LEDs on a pair of magnetic mounts. The mounts are maybe 3" diameter and have a ring of neodymium magnets embedded in rubber. These are the same lamps I've had on my first Wheelhorse. A B80. Also the attempt at a 1267/8 speed. Last year and the year before I just used a people mounted headlamp. It'll be great to have a full set of lights again. Other lighting will include two LED magnetic mount flashers, the rear tail lamp with LEDs, and a few other little add-ons of LED lights. 🤠
