Any of us that use a 32 or 26 inch Gear Drive Rotary Mower will be very familiar with the excessive wear the Hitch Shaft ends get over time. I decided to repair and upgrade this latest one. The plan was to cut down both ends to accept a thin wall 4140 press fit sleeve in the lathe. I made the sleeves in the lathe, but the belt tensioner arm was too long to allow it to get a full swing in the lathe. Moved over to the milling machine and went Old School, using a boring head with the bit reversed to do external cuts. Got about .001 press fit - a bit of red Loctite, good to go. Drilled for a grease fitting and cross drilled a .080 hole. Have yet to do the other end. Total cost (except for the electric bill) was Zero had everything I needed in stock. Bill

I know this subject has been beat to death. I found some info that you guys may like to see. I know liquid cooled and air cooled engines are different. Most classic engine builders recommend that the zinc / ZDDP in the oil should be around 1000ppm if you are running flat tappets. Here is a chart that shows the zinc and phosphorus levels in some of the oils that we might be using. You guys with all your nice machine tools are really starting to tick me off!

I have a friend that has asked me to get a 701 going for him. For the most part, it should be fairly straightforward, but I need ideas on finding a belt guard (doesn’t have to be a 701 guard, 702, 753, etc will work). I’m also going to have to replace the tranny as this one is toast. What is the going rate for a good 3 speed? I may have one, but am not sure on value. Sorry I haven’t been around, I’ve been busy with our local tractor club, Emory’s therapy and guitar lessons, and getting me a 30x45 metal building up. It’s going to be nice to be able to have a dry, heated/cooled place to work. I’ll post some pics in another thread after I get my dues paid to be able upload more pics. Seems like I’ve been slammed with everything lately along with finishing up my garage. It has hit me for almost double what I thought I’d have in it, but I figure this is my only chance to build it the way I wanted. Thanks guys and I hope to be back around a little more often as things settle and I feel like I can breath a little!

We've been finishing up the restoration on my 1975 C160 Automatic. Wiring harness and fuel tank, hoses left to install. After that we will give it a go and see what happens. When the plow and chains are on that tractor and it's ready to move snow, Trina's gonna decide which one of HERS she wants to bring in next.

I enjoy having a coffee and working on mine lately as well with the stereo on, its peaceful.

I use Rotella in my finer built engines but the smokers just get the cheapest oil I can lay my grubby hands on. I would guess so... I would like use more of their products without taking out a mortgage.

Well started restoration of a 1983 or 84 c145 started disassembling I have a few hours everyday my wife is working. Forgive me if its kind of weird im posting from my phone until I can get a cable to connect to my pc.

Make sure to get 1/4” NPT. The size of the plug is dictated by the size of pipe inside diameter. It’s more like 1/2” or so outside diameter.

Since 1989 Valvoline 10-30 year round since new. 2023 Valvoline 10-30 changed every 15 to 25 hours. No smoke, no oil usage. that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

So far its missing some bolts but really greasy. Also I am missing some of the engine tin covers and the bolts to them. Too bad its winter as I would have already had this degreased and power washed. Big shoutout to Pullstart as he is helping me with some of my questions and missing panels. I am going to replace the cracked fender pan with a metal one and try to find some of the missing parts.

@Racinbob I’m with you on that! I’ve yet to blow up one of my engines or cause unnecessary damage that I’m aware of. For years I used Kendall oil until my auto parts guy stopped carrying it. Then I switched to their brand and haven’t had any problems. If anything I may change oil too often! My Work Horse GT-1800 I bought brand new and never did anything to the engine but change the oil a lot. I never put additives in the oil or worried if it had zinc or anything else in it. It’s still going strong. That being said I hope I didn’t just jinx myself so I’ll shut up now!!

I ended up making my own lug studs. They are 7-16-20 fine thread. I bought hardened all thread and cut in equal lengths threaded into hub and nut on backside. Much easier to mount tires especially if full of ballast. Just used open ended acorn lug nuts on the outside

hello, oils are much more performant than in 70' . In France ,we don"t add anything to oil ( diesel 10w40 is fine) We just use add in gazoline because it's unlead. That prevents valves damages .

Lawn Ranger, 604,654, 704 use that hood Gas tank is a Briggs and not correct Seat is the style for RJs and Suburbans Fenders are just like a 604,654 and? So is the frame. I'm not that familiar with Lawn Rangers so...might be the same My first guess is a modified Lawn Ranger by someone else that thinks those tiny front tires look ridiculous.

Geez! You guys just tick me off. I've been hearing so much about zinc that you've got me wondering. Actually, more like believing. One thing I won't do is switch from the lubricating products that have never failed me for decades. But I'm certainly thinking about that Rislone additive. I'm thinking it would be a good idea but then my thoughts go to the "why mess with something that has always worked?" logic. As an additive would it actually do the job? Gotta ponder and research more.

Back two are a 312-8 and 310-8 and are keepers--both have plows... I use them for snow, firewood and general stuff. They aren't the prettiest, but they earn their bucket of oats every time I turn the key The front 314a with deck is currently for sale and runs great.... Nice! A grader blade is on the top of my watch list. I passed on one in VA a couple months ago and am kicking myself now. Excavating some areas in my yard is how this all started last year and by the time I move any dirt I'll likely have 4 working horses One for the tiller, one for the dozer blade, one with a cart, and another for good measure

For us - Plastic Kroger HD Lowe's Menards and Meijer shopping bags when I play Lawn Ranger... No patent issues, greatly reduced smell and mess... "Free" by the bucketload... I will never buy a device to pick up our "manure spreader's" efforts... he's very prodigious!!! but i'm way cheaper...
