Working on getting this 1970 32" gear drive deck going again, I found I needed to replace the aftermarket plastic lawnmower wheels on it. I searched the "Parts Department" and found that one of the later 3 blade C series decks I got from @Docwheelhorse had useable wheels with zerk fittings. Both needed a bit of attention - one was worn mostly on one side, the other was egg shaped. I chucked them up in the lathe and trued them up, sanded them with coarse emery cloth. Now they looked like go-kart slicks. Figured why not groove them? Cut them with a boring bar, cleaned up the cuts with the tip of a #3 centerdrill by hand... I call them "Wee- treads"... The rubber actually cut just fine - in the past I have had to put rubber parts in the freezer for at least 2 hours before I could get a clean cut.

C-160, narrow tower, big block Kohler K341 mounted to frame, gas tank under the hood, hydraulics mounted outside of tower, deeper offset front wheels. 1978 C-161, straight tower, hydraulics moved inside tower, first year of gas tank under the seat, battery moved into tower, first year of shaker plate engine mount, Kohler K-341 shallow oil pan engine, shallower offset front wheels, two tailights vs. one. Lip on front of footrest wider, removed turtle/rabbit - slow/fast from dashplate & electric clutch hole, replaced with Idle/Operate. Love them both.

Maybe this has been answered somewhere on here, I could not find it. I am finally getting around to cleaning up my Dad's 1979 C161. All original, as far as I can remember, side discharge mower. This is the last of the 4 my Dad had and have decided to just give a good cleaning and leave it as is, patina and all. My Son picked up a very clean C160 and we were curious about the visual/mechanical, differences. Mine has 16 horse Kohler and his has a 16 horse Techy. We had to rebuild 5091 Tranny and next is assemble the rest of his tractor. He wants to do most of the work so we will work on it when he is available. (My 857 is put on hold for a couple of days. You Dads know the deal!) Is more fun when he has his own that we can do together. Surpisied to see we still have WH deals available here in East Texas! If has a thread on the differences here, let me know. Dennis

That is the quote of the day for me. If you are happy with the job they did and no one got hurt doing it you won't remember the price, just the value of a job well done.

I wire brushed some hardware so Trina could get the choke and throttle cables back in the dash. She got that in the tractor. We fastened and adjusted the choke to the proper set. She's been hitting the motion control stick with poly a few times yesterday and today. That's now on.

C-160/C161: C161= gas tank under seat, engine shaker cradle, narrow engine oil pan, battery up on tower are the big differences. Other small differences also, my '77 C-160 has twin rear tail lights.

It has always idled way too high. Last night it fired off around 3500+ rpm like normal. I took apart that throttle extension if you recall the kit. It was holding the throttle open a good 1/2” too far. I found a video on synching the carbs with various size drill bits, so I modified that extension, adjusted the carbs and finally after a year got it to idle! With the tires on the ground, it idles “in neutral” and doesn’t creep a bit. This morning, test drive!

Well update I bought them both going to pick them up this weekend. Got the b-165 for 50 dollars that one has its mower deck. both are hydros. I'm going to power wash the C model and get it in the garage and start working on it, my craftsman lt1000 is on its last legs and to no surprise there are not alot of parts available and anything I can find is made in china and barley lasts a season.

Thanks to all replies. Answers some questions I had....why my Dad's many spare parts included the rubber shock mounts for the motor. He always believed in having spares and never threw anything away. Also, I now have pics of a WH with a tiller and snow blower attached. Have the tiller but no snow blower, hmmm might need one of them, if they could only blow leaves!

The C-160 should have a rigidly mounted motor and the C-161’s motor would be on a motor mount with rubber often called a “cradle mount”.

Mine was not that bad on my C-120, It was only 12 years old at the time, but it destroyed the spindle. I also had a bad hub on my 1989 520 when I got it the bearing was loose, but the spindle was still good. I used the good wheel came off my C-120.

@ebinmaine as you know chinese junk , barely makes anything right . lube/ and lateral firming helps a lot , also better if wheel / tire can slide rather than grip ground for less lateral loading , pete
  30. 3 points
@Lee1977 found that firming up those bearings and related areas to tougher lubrication , has prevented galling / scoring to movement areas . very solid / smooth . washer up that lateral / side bearing play , thats the killer to bearings . when they shuck / slide impact , side to side , that is their weakest point . washers eliminate that . since doing that to my horses , there is no bearing issues . when I grease the front end its off the ground for better grease coverage , and you can verify how it feels for function . bearings fail when they are out of their strong point and grease that will not hold in place. only a suggestion , pete
  31. 3 points
Time to go with trailer wheels, spindles and hubs. There isn't a way to fix those wheels they won't hold a bearing tight and will destroy another set of spindles.

McMaster Carr has them - but - the depth is certainly greater than the length of the inserting tool. - They call them Shaft Repair Sleeves, not exactly cheap at around $50 plus shipping... I did one once on a Saturn timing cover seal - worked just fine...

How Much Is The Platinum In A Catalytic Converter Worth? The average catalytic converter has 3 to 7 grams of platinum worth about $100 – $237. Platinum is more valuable than gold, silver, and even palladium and is a good target for thieves. As of 2022, the platinum price is $997 per ounce and $32.18 per gram. Keep in mind the platinum price constantly fluctuates.

Replacement Packard 56 wire terminals can be purchased at Del City, they will snap right into the housings you have and are superior to any individual spade terminals you could buy. These are topnotch material and hold tight. they are the same as was used at the factory. Crimp them to your new wire and then solder them. https://www.delcity.net/store/Female-Terminals/p_9291.h_150481 https://www.delcity.net/productsearch?search=packard 56

I would install the larger down spouts. I had the larger gutters and down spouts installed on my house last years. Gutters made on site. One guy to make gutters and do the installation of gutters and down spouts and I watched. Ole guys have to supervise.

Thanks so much for sharing , i guess i am gone have to visit Spain, and watch out for front axles.

Based on your measurements, I think worst case scenario you might have to grind a bit from the top of the axle to slide the clip on but I think you'll be good.

Try putting a idler pulley close to that small pulley and get as much belt to groove contact as possible. If you put it on an arm, swivel at the end mounting point and make it adjustable with a bolt you can crank it tight. On the bike, it's even a smaller drive pulley but that's what ended up working. Super tight cogged belt rigid idler close to small pulley but the belt tension is done at the rear tire, so may be worth a try. Or do something to space the trans back to tighten the belt with a rigid mounted idler. Like studs in the trans and nuts to adjust and lock down??? Just throwing more $&!t to see what sticks

My only guess. Remove the crank. Fill the groove with JB Weld and sand, sand, sand

I often find bags of loose converter comb at one particular landfill, farmers using purple gasoline will eventually poison the converter. One power loss is noted the comb is removed. Imports have a higher precious metals loading this assures the catalytic will exceed warranty thus saving the manufacture the cost of dealing with a failed converter on foreign soil. Bets price I got was $1500.00 for a converter from Dodge diesel, the GM bread loafs depending on size $400.00 / $300.00. Due to junkyard shenanigans, I haven't sold my cats to any of them in years, instead I strip the precious metals wash coat off of the comb using chemicals easily obtained from the hardware store. I've seen an assay from catalytic converters that spent their entire life on asphalt, $135.00 per pound of comb while my country cats assayed at $35.00 per lb. Poor vehicle maintenance and dusty roads a contributing factor. Fine dust particles by passing the paper air cartridge sand blast the converter wash coat out of the tailpipe. Turbo charged domestic vehicles will also have more precious metals content due to the forced air induction with increased vacuum at the air filter drawing in more dust. Dust so fine its invisible to the naked human eye. The best air filter you can have is an oil bath.

@Horse Newbie Have you gotten to try to put new bearings in those wheels? I had the same thought as Lee. I'm wondering if the hole in those wheels is worn so badly that they won't hold a bearing for any reason.

The 'stock' stuff from the big box stores is made of aluminum foil. Put a ladder against it and it dents... EASILY! AVOID! Agree on the bigger downspout size and the screw in anchors.

Using a 3-Jaw puller with two long bolts threaded into the Enmgine Pulley. Be sure the two bolts are fullly treaded ...and equal depth...into the pulley or it will twist / go cockeyed. In this case, the bearing race was also stuck tight to the crankshaft, but it came off within a minute or so. 014.AVI
