Post up before / after pic of your worst basket case saves... (This one lives at @Pullstart stables now...)

I love these threads Sylvia. Some folks look at these baskets and figure just a bunch of scrap. By all rights they should be but it says alot about thus hobby and the passion and personal satisfaction of driving it and showing when all is said and done. I think what would be cool is to haul say a basket case say an 867 to a show and park it next to one restored with before and after signs. Most folks don't see what has been started out with. Only the guys that have ever done one know what it takes. My favorite although not done yet is this 701 Dan willed me. Can't rush a good thing. Never in a million when I bought this tractor in '86 did I ever... think it would someday end up looking like this!

A two fer one. Both were such molested wrecks I knew I needed two just to make one but always wanted a short frame with a big block. Less than 150 spent with both tractors. Let's not talk about the build tab... she may be listening...

I started this one with just a pile of parts. Had a K-91 on it Iwould just pull it around. Made quite a few changes on it and installed HF 420 Haven't had it out in a couple years. Did a build on it over on My Tractor Forum. It's in Home built tractor tread DonF [/ur

The biggest issue with that method is how pressure is applied. By hand it is a very difficult thing to do correctly. There is always a tendency for more material to be taken out at the edge the belt rotates towards. With very fine grits, heat also becomes an issue. A flat metal or glass plate is a constant non changing reference area regardless of pressure unless one is reckless at it. Without it such a reference area would really be the pressure applied since one cannot depend on the sanders plate to do that on an inexpensive machine. They are just not accurate. Fine paper will also get clogged quickly without lubrication which can wreck havoc on a machine not designed for that. I experimented with that method to flatten backs of wide plane blades 2" to 3" in width. They were of course high speed tempered steel or similar. Too much of a hassle and they did not come out flat. Far from it and uneven in thickness. Spend more time correcting the results from the sander than it would actually take by hand on a flat plate which always resulted in predictable accuracy.

I noticed another member posted his E141 setup to push that pesky white snow, so I thought I would just make a thread to show our machines at work ,instead of highjacking his. Needed some fire wood and the woods around here is full of dead small trees.

I know......Late notice. East Broadway ST extended Red Lion, Pa. I will have a couple tractors there. The peoples choice will be judged by donations of the spectators. All proceeds will be donated to a Children Lunch Program.

Me n the BBT have chosen her 657 Pony and my '74 C160-8 Cinnamon Horse. Cinnamon was ROUGH. We ended up getting another chassis for that one. Pony wasn't near as rough but was wearing a particularly ugly coat of hand-slopped & age-darkened Oliver green. I don't have pics because of changing phones but here's the thread links:

There is an engine shop in my area that has a special horizontal belt sander made for truing heads. I took a pair of 350 Chevy heads there to be dressed after he said how flat they would be. When I picked them up, I laid them face to face and you could have read a newspaper between them. He then set up the big mill and did them right but of course more material was removed than I wanted. A belt sanding operation will be no better than the platen backing up the belt and may be much worse. I learned my lesson. For my small engine heads, I use the sandpaper placed on a very flat band saw table, If a head is way out I have a mill. Those that use glass should be aware that all glass isn't flat and thin glass will bend to fit the underlying surface.

Oh, Boy!! Kind of like watering the flowerbed with a fire hose. I think it would be too aggressive, too much material removal too quickly -and a great chance to end up tapered but flat. And, you still need to dust a guide coat of paint on to see if it "flat" Add this one to the list - guns and Tequila allow you to make regretable mistakes in the blink of an eye.... Bill

The corporate farmer to my West spread several hundred ton of chicken manure today. Of course we had a 10MPH West wind today, so the brown cloud covered my lawn and garden. Just need to keep the doors and windows closed till the next rain soaks it in the ground. Four of these trucks were hauling all day...probably 20 truckloads.

I would be afraid that a belt sander would eat too much material or giving you uneven surface. My experience is based on my wood working and other jack leg projects. Even the finest belts 150 to 200 grit will eat up a surface.

Geez Sylvia... that’s tuff act to follow... all I did was put some WW on a 502. Wow ... hope the text talk police don't show up at my door... Got these from @cschannuthwhen I picked up the FEL and figured I'd never use them... wrong. Only maybe 20-30 lbs a piece but better than a poke in the eye with a dull stick. I may try and hitch up that 8 in Brinly Craig I got from you too. I couldn't get it to track right behild the regular plow mule but didn't futz with it that much. Be happy to know Greasy Pete before she left the shop got a full lube job... red tacky and all. Just an awesome little tractor and I definitely fell in love with her techy and all.

My personal opinion is I like the two piece seats. They look better and are plenty comfy for me. Since I don’t have a 100 acres to mow and neither do most of you the original seat is plenty good enough. Also much easier to embark and debark from too. It would seem the value of Mike’s seat goes down by the comment. 😜 I’ll take all your original junky uncomfortable Wheel Horse seats. 😂😂

It's the little things... Walker 22229 muffler, 1.5" 90° stainless bend. I'm not sure if my stock muffler is failing, or what, but this has been a huge help. I've seen a very nice stainless muffler build, but I don't have the resources to make something that nice.

I work in the Ag industry and run a dry fertilizer plant. We deal in commercial fertilizer and a lot of poultry litter. The draw of the manure is it’s cheaper and in a lot of cases better for the ground. Commercial fertilizer reached over a thousand dollars per ton this year. Manure contains living organisms which commercial fertilizer will never have. Normally one of those end dump trailers will have roughly 26 ton. Depending how wet the litter is

I didn't get a picture, but last week my Amish neighbor that is adjacent to this corporate farm, was spreading roadapples (hi Jay) with a small hand loaded spreader pulled by two horses. Quite a contrast between these two side by side farms in my back yard.

When my uncle bought a side discharge manure spreader my brother wanted to be the first to use it. My uncle forgot to tell him to not to make any right hand turns. When he got to the end of the field he made a tight right turn and he and the tractor both got a liberal coating of fresh chopped cow patties. That sort of erased all previously accumulated at-a-boys.

Trina got the seat pan ready for paint today. Removed the original 1974 rear light. Cute little round push/turn bulb 💡 in it. She hammer and dollied several areas to get it close to straight. Then she spent some time hand sanding the whole thing and cleaning it up with acetone. Primer tomorrow. In the reassembly department she put the hydraulic cylinder and brake/neutral pedal on. I got the engine drive pulley off. Removed the flywheel screen using the AWESOME new manual impact driver o got today. Also pulled the flywheel and cleaned the block a little. Note the little nests between every magnet.

No fair... all you did was a new seat... well ... guess that works for me... The 953 now known as "Hot Wheels" Give it a year or two with it's current owner... sure it will return to it's former glory... or worse and have a motor that doesn't belong in a tractor!

Another trouble with a belt sander is that it would be too fast. You could slow it down by changing v belt sheaves. Most sanding belts, the splice where they are put together is not smooth so that could cause a problem. id stick to doing them by hand.

The snowthrower belt is 5/8" x 69". Make sure you get one designed to bend backwards over the flat idler. A Gates green belt available from Napa is the correct design.
