Per my previous post, the rear weights are assembled, but it was evident a device was needed to hold the weight securely while lineing it up to the wheel. I make a simple bolt on attachment for my trusty 40 year old 2 ton floor jack. Most of it was made from various itens from the "Parts Department". A length of 2-14" OD exhaust pipe, a pair of two 2-1/2" conduit clamps, a pair of 1/8" x 1" flat straps drilled for the clamps, and a short length of 5/16" threaded rod, inserted thru the end of the pipe to act as a stop to keep the weight in place. Worked well. Total cost was under $15 bucks.

I have enjoyed messing with my wheelhorse tractors but always admired the round hoods and wanted one for the grandkids. Passed on a couple for sale recently due to over priced and missing parts or wrong engines, etc. Just landed this 704 that appears to be quite original with parts intact including 7 HP pull start Kohler. It looks rough and is going to need some work but pull cord and recoil were intact and working, engine turns over easily and shifter goes into all gears ok and even feels like heavy fluid in the transmission. Got it home and cleaned up and shifter boot is even intact! Front tires are shot and left wheel may be past salvaging but rears look good and even holding air. Fellow passed and had dozens of tractors all over the property his family is now selling. Has a couple more wheelhorses and bunch of Kohler motors. Nothing running. If I had more room I would be tempted.... I don't anticipate a restore job on the 704. I just get them running and use 'em! I know you all like pictures so here goes... First ones are after the wash job removing green stuff and first layer of dirt/rust. Later pictures are how she came.

I bought a pair of non-WH cast iron rear wheel weights from @stevebo this October - at 55 LBS each, they were better than the cement filled plastic ones I had. Seemed there was enough behind the weight to add a 10 inch diameter x 1" thick plate weight also. Hard to find 20 pound weights - not a commom size at all. Caught a Thanksgiving sale on the Jungle site - a pair of 10.1"" x 1.1" cast iron weights delivered for $45.00. Used an old 5" wide rim to use as a "window" for white spraypaint and to hold the transfer punch to leave a dimple mark at the 4 locations. Not bad, all measured 8-5/8" apart. Set one up at a time and drilled them for a 9/16" clearance hole. Luckily, the grade of cast iron on them was a decent close grain that machined easily. I decided to flycut the "as cast" inside mating surface of the 55 pounders so the new weights would sit flat - The grain structure of the big weights varied - typical of weights (some recycled Tugboat engine block bits in the mix, I'm sure). Assembled the sets and checked with the 5" rim - no issues fitting, but they now weight 75 LBS each - a handling device was needed and designed.... next post. Bill

And now for the pics on how she came out of the yard. Had been under a shed but the roof had fallen in so no idea how long she was in the weather.

In response, I shrug and think to myself "hey, if they enjoy being sick, let 'em". Me, I don't like it so I'll take steps to avoid it!

My wife and I will be flying in two weeks and will be masked for the whole trip from CT to El Paso. If there's a shot we've got it.

In SE PA, flu and RSV have been hitting hard among all age groups. Local hospital beds are filled to capacity, especially pediatric ones. My niece had to cancel a cruise because she tested positive for covid (mild symptoms). RVS and flu has killed a few people around here. I've had my flu shot and 5 covid shots, but I still try to avoid crowds. I refuse to shop weekends close to Christmas. We buy Christmas gifts on line if possible. Still keep hand sanitizer in my cars. I hate wearing masks too, so I just avoid crowded stores. At 80 years old, I have to be careful. Jim

I don't object to anyone's choice to wear or not wear a mask. However, I'm fully vaxed, have recently had Covid, have had my flu shot and I refuse to wear a mask unless it is required to get into a doctor's office, and then some require, some don't. I just had a root canal yesterday, no mask required. Just went to my urologist on Monday, no mask required. Went to a Chinese restaurant and the sign said masks required. I ate Mexican.

Have to agree. Here in Maine the annual flu is taking a good strong hold. There's also a viral and/or bacterial issue being spread rampantly around schools in particular. Folks .. Be safe. Not stubborn. I have difficulty remembering to stick to my own words.

Fair amount of fun today. We moved the stand up drill press out of the basement and to the barn. Moved my biggest bench vise from a high mount on one bench to a low mount across the room where the drill press was. I used the HF 20 ton press to remove the hub from the other axle. Got the 10 pinion Limited Slip Differential apart so I could inspect it. I'll use the longer axles that were with the LSD for a slightly wider rear stance. Trina was slinging paint out of a rattle can off n on all day. The frame and steering tower is done. @WHX?? Lookitt this RED!! Hoping tomorrow I'll get a minute to try to cut grooves in the axles.

Not an odd question. I have a swept axle on my C165 that runs 18-8.50R8s and I do not experience any issues with my 48" deck hitting the wheels and my deck has the large anti-scalp wheels on it from a 270-series deck. It is a close fit, but no issues so a regular 48" deck should operate just fine with the larger tires.

Some are surely mold identifiers. Manufacturers need these to link product with the molds that create them in the event of defects and to time "retirement" of a mold. But that's a lotta numbers!
  24. 4 points
You buy snap rings by the external diameter of the axle. Also by the heavy duty ones. and mount so sharp edge faces the inner end of the axle

Sorry for your loss Richard, that never feels good to hear. We believe though, that our maker has a plan for us no matter how we go. We’ve chosen to not live our lives in fear and believe that there is a plan. Ignorance, or faith, it’s working so far. I know it’s a decision that’s not for everybody’s situation, but that is the choice we’ve made.

Put new adjustable tie rods on. Had about 1/2" toe out with old tie rods. With new ones in and adjusted I have about 1/4" toe in. Definitely steers much easier.

Been in a changing and organizing mode lately what with the new building being done. Trying to make sure things are best placed. Often kept mobile. I'm hoping to plan right... Today we moved the stand up drill press from the basement workshop out to the barn. Also moved the Big vise across the room. I put it in the empty spot on the far corner.

There have been a few times that I've set snap traps and turned around to walk away and... SNAP!! Dangit... need to adjust the pedal, trap ain't staying set. NOPE! Mouse daid. Reset the trap, place again, same thing... walk away, SNAP! another mouse... This would go on four or five times. Apparently they were living under the boiler where I set the traps and it was too easy for them to get to... and they couldn't resist the Peanut butter.

Interesting you'd say that. It's inventory day at work. As Commercial Drivers several of us are limited to hours. If the full crew isn't needed the drivers are the first to be released. I'm NOT working! Excellent! Now for the home shop.... That's different! Plenty to do today!

Autos just recently came out with self-driving mode… airplanes have had auto-pilot for years. I have a friend that works in the automotive industry/ research and development… he let me in on an industry secret awhile back while we were discussing these new cars and their self driving systems, and exactly what @clueless was talking about above… He said… Since flying while drinking is a much more potentially deadly action, the FAA established long ago that “any” amount of alcohol was not acceptable when flying, whether the pilot was using auto-pilot or not… He also said… The big auto manufacturers and executives knew this question would eventually arise with auto-pilot on cars, and have been working behind the scenes with the US AG, legal scholars, Constitutional law experts, and the US Supreme Court. He said… The consensus is leaning toward charging the driver with DUI, and charging the car with aiding and abetting !
