Today would have been the 74th birthday of our friend @roadapples, we miss you.

A good life lived by a good man. Makes one think of what kind of legacy we will leave behind. It’s not what kind and amount of material goods we accumulated and left behind, but rather what we did to better others’ lives and what kind of human beings we were. That is a legacy that will be remembered . Lucky are the ones that are able to recognize it and benefit from it. Unlucky are the fools that don’t and spend a lifetime chasing what amounts to nothing. We should designate today as @roadapples day for the following years.

Just talked with your brother Guy yesterday. Happy to report much of your collection has found some good homes and much more will be delivered to the 2023 Big Show. Last week was "Roadapples Day" at the Kennells. I made my annual trip to a friends horse boarding farm and picked up a ton of roadapples. They will be transformed into real apples, pears, plums, strawberrys, blackberrys, and vegetables next summer. Rest easy my friend.......

So I was outside enjoying a beautiful day here in Western New York. Had two of my favorites out with me. Jeffrey and Forsaken. Jeffrey stopped biting the tires long enough for me to snap a picture. He HAS to bite the tires of whatever rolls out of the garage. Lawn mower, snowblower, trailer, tractor.... if it has tires and rolls he bites them. Anyone else have a dog who does that ? Let's see your photos of your dogs with your Wheel Horse.

No tire bitten, but she appears in just about all the pictures.

Next on the Waldo to do list is find a roll of fine grade plumbers sand paper or steal it from my brother. . I was surprised this morning , heated the sleeve in a few places and arm muscled the screw on the puller and it started moving. The sleeve was brown welded to the pulley until I dropped it. As a celebration I quit working on the mobile and messed around blowing leaves away from shed. Bonnet is now baking in the dry heat . Another coat of red in the morning after the stove heats up good.

Without the next generation our hobby dies. It’s great seeing everyone be supportive of him and other kids that are on this site. A lot of people just see kids as a pain and getting in the way. Mines learning from all of you who have been supportive it’s great. He is the one and only reason I got back into these tractors after the last 4 years of not doing a thing with them.

Looks like you are doing it right. Not too many kids have a father that take the time to share his hobby with them, even fewer fathers have a son that is interested in spending all their time with dad. Lucky son, lucky dad.

Having a handful of XI machines, with a few miles on them, I am finding out how tough they are on rear axles and hubs. They tip the scales just north of 1000 pounds and are very powerful machines. They use the old key and setscrew set up and most show signs of hub/key issues after the 500 hour mark. Finding a good solid repair requires knowing what you have to work with. Having a hub with a good bore is the first step. This hub is in great shape and still has the machine marks in the bore indication of it not moving around on the axle shaft. Any of the newer 1 1/8 hubs work as long as the key and bore are okay. Taking measurements of the shaft and noting the keyway condition is next. Shafts slightly worn < (-.005), with bad keyways can be used with the taper hub sold by A-Z. I have one running with a shaft that is .010 and the taper is all the way in but is still holding up okay. Note the split at 6 o'clock on taper, it is closed up pretty tight and the taper is all the way in the hub. Axle key way used with taper lock hub. Shafts slightly worn with okay keyway I like to use loctite 660 with primer. And a oversize key (+002) (xi machines use a straight key) and use alloy set screws (MMC #91416A315) torqued to 45 ft lbs. A note when using the 660 I found putting a bead of it inside of the rear of the hub bore that goes on the axle first is the best practice. I have got sloppy with this stuff, putting it on the axle and when the hub was slid on it leached into the seal area and later hardened and wiped out the seal. Somewhat sceptical about the 660 holding up, The worn axle .003 under with the seal that needed changed did hold up well and needed a puller to remove the hub. It was impressive. I think I am as a standard now going to just use the 660 on all my axle/hub installations. One other repair I used for a bad xi key, taking a die grinder and cutting the width of the key in the axle to 5/16 wide. Used a step key and reinstalled with 660. It is holding up well. All else fails......wled it!

So good to see another generation interested in these old tractors. Way to go! Your boy seems to have the same interest as mine. If he’s not on a machine doing leaves,grass or just hauling something… it’s not a good day. 😂 Not only is he learning it’s just great quality time together. Can’t replace it.

I’m not sure if it was stubbornness, or the eager beaver attitude of the hatchet, but the tree is down! You can see that I’ve cut this tree down once before. I’ll have to keep after new growth and maybe get some stump killer if it takes off again.

Today I took my plow apart for my 604 and my dad helped me set up an e/tank.We are hoping to get it painted while it’s still warm out and put it on.

If you go to https://www.medicare.gov/ you can compare plans and make the changes you want, there is no need to deal with people that have their best interest in mind. I check each year to see if I am getting the best deal for me and it doesn't take long at all. I use a Medicare Advantage plan and that is slightly hidden on the website, but it is easy to do what needs to be done and if I want to change it, just a few mouse clicks takes care of it. The highly advertised plans, the mailings, the brokers and the advisors all need to just go away.

My dogs bite the vacuum

Well this turned into a bigger job than I had hoped.. then again you all know how I "roll" by now Made a cross with spacer bushings to clear the hub. Also made some plastic washers to (hopefully) save the red paint of the rim. Two M16 bolts to bolt the weight to. The center tube doubles as a guide I can stick the weight on, then slide it back over the bolts. Also makes it look like it now has long axles which is a look I think makes it look 'American'. Ofcourse the grey is only zinc-primer, painted the crosses shiny black. I'll have to do some work on the weights themselves. I want to mount them what can be considered backwards because I think that looks better. Since the weights were not designed to be mounted that way I have to make some room for a nut and socket so I can tighten them properly. More on that tomorrow (hopefully). More cleanup today. I did some edging around the cement approaches, pulled more grapevine, wild raspberry, and some trees that sprout from their own root system. I’m starting to get somewhere!

Those are easy to crack in the same fashion, maybe even easier than cast. Grind a slit in it with a angle grinder and use a chisel to split it.

@19richie66 thank you. He definitely has been hooked by the horse bug now that he has several of his own. He’s a hard worker. @ebinmaine thank you for those kind words. I’ve definitely tried to raise all my kids to be good people. At some point we will have to find time to get together I’m sure Alex would like to meet you. Someone’s already hinting that he wants me to bring him to the big show in 2023.

There’s been a few inquiries into this so I wanted to clear it up a little bit. Fourwheels0 asked permission to post his go fund me to the forum as he is experiencing some unexpected medical expenses which he is asking for help with. We have given him the permission to do so. He probably could have explained it a little bit better, but details are in the go fund me listing.

I'm not Bob, but I'll add my 2 cents here. I have 2 of the Carbole 12v pumps, one on a Kohler 12 and one on an Onan 16, and have had very good results so far. First one has been in service for maybe a year, so that's not a long trial. As far a wiring, at first I just put a toggle switch on the positive wire where I could reach it below the hood, because it was expedient at the time. Later, I tested various wires coming out of the circuit board and found one that came on when the switch was turned on, and tapped into that. I like that these come with a backflow valve - i.e., it doesn't let fuel flow backwards, so there's not much distance for the gas to refill the lines depending on how long it's been sitting, I suppose. I mounted mine under the hood, but I do like the "under the seat" idea too.

(since I took this pic I've added cross chains to the set that's on there. My neighbor gave me some old chains that I took apart and used the cross chain parts.)
