This one was on Marketplace for quite a while with a hefty price tag. I ask if he was flexible on price, Nope. After a quite a while longer same question before I made the drive. Come on up, maybe we can make a deal. The rest is history, I didn't steal it, but I'm happy with the deal! Ya I know you want pictures, but there a little more interesting back story. His granddad's business was Nicholson Machine and Equipment and he was a Wheelhorse Dealer in the 50's and 60's in Paris....., Tx that is! He sent me this picture of the glass window from the door to the business that he has framed. He also wrote me a short note about his Granddad's business. So after his he passed, his dad gave the tractor to him. he's had it for quite a few years and said it's always been garage kept. So if a Dealer owned this for his own use and never sold it, and then it passed to his Son, and then Grandson, that would technically make me the 1st buyer, Ok so on to some tractor photo's beautiful double pulley belt guard front and center. It starts with a spray of gas in the carb, but doesn't stay running. All there, nice and original, you can see a weld repair on the front of the belt guard, Here's the serial number @gwest_ca The plastic dash is intact and not cracked! My 1st old style split key. it still has the orignal Silverton Ags. They hold air, but their so hard they probable don't need any. I wonder if their hard because they might still have calcium chloride in them??? The hitch pin isn't frozen and the lift cable even works. Interesting decal plastered across the front of the hood. aluminum gas tank is fairly clean. Hood bottom tab has been repaired. topless view of the engine, needs a bath. The front tires are original and hold air, but have some splits across the thread. Homemade choke and throttle cable bracket. The base of the engine has wet oil, so i suspect it needs some gaskets. Both axle seals are dry, but the input shaft and brake shaft seals leak. I've learned if the top of the transmission is filthy oily, it probable means theirs water in the transmission that has floated the oil out. This one is clean so hopefully that's a good sign. Started some maintenance and a beautiful sight, not a drop of water, just black oil. It shifts through the gears nicely so it will be interesting to see how it runs/drives. I'll gradually go all through it with my checklist. 701 Minor Overhaul Checklist.ods Then have to decide if I rub it down with linseed oil like it is, or buff with some steel wool or wet sand to bring a little more red out, then oil. How would ya'll put your finishing touches on it? I'll update this thread as I do maintenance on it and get it running.

I met @DZG today, he brought me another Wisconsin in trade for a Briggs he needed. Great to meet you man! this S-12D 12 hp engine is very similar appearing to the old AEN! 1” shorter and just as stout. I wonder where it’ll wind up some day!

Never owned a short frame hydro before, so I’ve been casually looking for one on FB Marketplace. I never look on Craigslist anymore as there isn’t much WH related listed anymore, but for the heck of it I checked last night. Well whatta ya know!! An 876 is for sale IN MY TOWN! And to make it even better it was 1.2 miles away! Story: guy has owned it for 24 years, he thought it was a lousy mower and gave the deck away, so for the last 14 years it was just used to clear small snow storms and pull a yard cart around. He’s a Gravely guy and used the 3 he has for mowing and deeper snow. Struck up a deal and it’s mine now. Runs and drives well. I think full RPM’s are less than 3000 so that’ll need adjusted, seat is a bit messed up and the front tires are way to big at 18”. I’ll get a set of 16x5.50’s back on it. Included the plow, 4 link chains and rear wheel weights Pics of course….

UPDATE: I got the rims back, my new tires arrived, and today I mounted them. What a relief. The color is Oyster White, the tires are Kenda LoadStar. I think that I am finally happy.

Most lawn care equipment built today is made to last an average of 5yrs. This is by design because factory's don't make money on some thing that last forever. In my opinion - If you wish to have a tractor that will last, go with a compact tractor. JD, Mahindra, MF, Bobcat, Kubota, LS, etc. The compact tractors are built to last longer than todays garden/lawn tractors.

Thanks, Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet. It's low man on the pole so it might be a while before I get into it. No worries though Duct Tape, Zip Ties & Dreams will turn it into some thing.

… tire shop that it is. We’ve had Norman for 4 years. The Bridgestone on it were installed a mile after purchase. I sent ‘em to rubber heaven on the way to the shop!

Picked up a Wheelhorse dump cart, cleaned out the head on the motor, checked tappet clearance and inspected cylinder for scoring, and reassembled. Neglected to take a picture of the internals after cleaning. And gave the motor a coat of engine enamel.

It's an RJ58 There's a gear box trans with the shifter missing That 2.5 briggs isn't original. That would an RJ25 so he probably got his info wrong. K90 K91 or Clinton B1290 is original He's got an extra pulley added under the engine for some reason ? Missing the belt guard. These aren't the greatest tractor for young kids. Too easy to burn themselves on the engine. Plus they can pop up pretty good in third gear. A teenager - maybe

Haven't looked that far into it yet. Basically aired up the tires, which by the way miraculously held air despite the huge cracks & missing chunks in the side walls. Then pushed it off the trailer. Hope to get a little time to look at it this weekend

Busting a gut here... what was that line in blues bros about speed!?!? Anyhoo TJ and EB let's edumatacate you. Teckys were a lower priced motors in the day regardless of specs. Old man Kohler didn't build a world class golf course without beating Lauson did he. His engines were touted in the day as best in class for the buck. Oems had a different take they wanted a cheaper motor aka teckys. At least for their " budget " line. Boxes still sold even back then. Many OEMs went with Tecumseh as they were cheaper than Kohler's. If the OEM was a buck cheaper on every tecky motor they bought over Kohler and say they bought 10,000 motors how much would they save or in bean counter terms how much would they profit? Truth be told I have nothing personal against Tecumseh, my old man use to work there in their New Holstein plant. It's a parts thing nowadays to keep them running.

I just don’t understand why people mess with original stuff like wiring. It’s one thing to replace a wire because it’s worn or frayed but to turn what once was neat and organized into a rats nest is beyond me.

It does feel that way. I’ve owned two of them and have passed on a couple. Ed from Toro verified the count for us at one point. Only 225 serial numbers were issued and only in 1990 so that’s all there should be. I think their perceived commonality comes from them being new enough that they mostly haven’t deteriorated to a state that makes them unsalable by current owners, that they were so expensive new that they have been generally maintained in operational condition, and that most of the original and seconds owners are turning them over now that they have gotten old and more people are retiring from mowing grass. My local dealer here in STL told me at one point that he figured he probably sold more 520-8’s than just about any other dealer. He made it sound like they were poor sellers in general and a bunch of them became available at the end of the season at a good deal. So he gladly passed them along to customers at a better price than a regular 520. He estimated that he probably sold 25 of them. The whole point of the 20 hp engine really was to handle the 60” deck and the 44” two stage thrower. Since the 8-speed omitted the hydraulic lift both of these attachments were literally an armful to lift. Tasks where the manual transmission really shines - like tilling and front loader work - don’t use much power. So it’s an odd combination I guess. Steve

White Perch aka Silver Bass are a school fish that feeds on grass shrimp and horseshoe crab eggs. When the bite is on, it is common to boat 50 of these one lb. gems in an hour. They are no. 1 at the fish fry.

Added some bling bling to Alice just for S&Gs. VHT paint. She also had a broken leg so a new seal & hub. Worse hub I ever saw. I don't think I'm even going to try and broach it. Out to the magic parts shed for a replacement. Check out the original filter!

Nice tractor! My C Series sure are hard workers. Lots of friendly, knowledgeable help here scattered between the endless chatter. Yep that poor horse is probable running a yellow fever with those weights. Get some paint on them quickly and it will feel better in the morning.

Kids decided the wishbone was ripe for plunking apart last night. They thought long and hard for their wishes. I made sure their pinkies were far to the bottom so nobody had more or less leverage. Then POP! The center section landed across the table at my placemat! I happened to be viewing a round hood tractor on RedSquare. Hmm….

We have TSC, Family Farm and Home, Blaine’s Farm and Fleet and on the other side of the pond is Fleet Farm. We’re blessed with more options than we need. It’s like those need a penny take a penny have a penny give a penny boxes on the counter. You’ll save at one joint and pay through the nose for another item where you could’a saved on the other and paired through the nose elsewhere!

@TonyToro Jr.and I worked on his pulling tractor (Last Minute) the past few days. We needed to add more weight to the tractor so he would be at 1050lbs with him driving. We got some heavy steel from the bargain bin at Logan Steel. I welded it all up and painted it flat black. We now have approx 110lbs hanging right under the gearbox. He also found some diamond plate there and wanted to make headlight cover. A couple upgrades done and hopefully they show a difference this Friday.

Just about done harvesting from me little garden. Todays menu...25lbs of tomatoes to boil for a bit, drop in cold water, peal and chop up. Onions, garlic, red & green bell peppers chopped up then sautéed. Throw every thing in pots along with some dried basil & oregano from the garden. Add a few more spices and then let the whole concoction simmer for 5hrs while remembering to stir it every 15min. End results - A little over 10qts of spaghetti sauce. Perfected my recipe to my liking last year. Just a little sweet with bit of heat to put a damp sweat on your brow. Don't think I can go back to store bought.
